  • Peer-to-peer accommodation in destination life cycle : the case of Nordic countries
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Routledge. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 20:3, s. 212-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internet platforms, enabling short-term rental of private houses, are an increasingly important provider of tourist accommodation. The largest peer-to-peer accommodation platform is Airbnb. To date, most geographical studies on Airbnb investigated spatial patterns and effects of platform activity on large cities. This study attempts to expand the understanding of the role of Airbnb in various types of urban and non-urban tourism destinations. It employs Tourism Area Life Cycle model to investigate the differences in the quantity of peer-to-peer accommodation in destinations in various stages of their life cycles. Five Nordic countries are used as the study setting. A database of 61 thousand active non-hotel Airbnb listings is compared with statistical data obtained from national statistical institutions on regional (74 NUTS-3 regions) geographical scale. The results show that peer-to-peer rental supply and use is concentrated in destinations characterised by the quick increase in the number of tourist visits.

  • From pluri-activity to entrepreneurship: Swedish inshore commercial fisheries navigating in the service-oriented economy : Special issue Tourism and fishing
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 21:4, s. 374-390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For decades, inshore commercial fisheries of Sweden have declined in the number of fishermen. In parallel, the service economy has gained importance and the growth in tourism is one example. This implicates new conditions for small firms, active in traditional rural industries. While knowledge about the socio-cultural context of small tourism firms is underdeveloped and since policymaking assigns these firms a key role in sustainable rural development, this article aims to explore a traditional industry in change during the first decades of the twenty-first century. This qualitative study is based on a fieldwork inspired by multi-sited ethnography, conducted at the Swedish west coast for a dissertation published in 2019. Drawing on discourse theory and the concept of positioning, the analysis concludes that inshore fisheries in the service economy are expected to become sustainable entrepreneurs and hosts for their communities. The fishermen position themselves in a contradictory manner both resisting and conforming to the political management discourse. The contemporary service-oriented economy and social relations largely form these small firms, which are characterised by both a high dependency on authorities and by their encounters with harbour visitors.

  • Specialization versus diversification in the event portfolios of amateur athletes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 20:4, s. 376-397
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the personal event portfolios of amateur athletes, differentiating between those who pursue a specialized career within one sport and those who diversify within multiple sports. The impetus for this paper was the observation made in previously published research that many sport-event tourists participate in multiple sports. The twin objectives of the study are to better understand highly involved participants and to draw implications that could contribute to the events' and the country's competitiveness in sport event tourism. The study also addresses the question of whether or not these portfolio choices emerge as involvement increases - in other words, do highly involved amateur athletes tend to specialize in one sport, as suggest by recreation specialization theory? A total of 6691 participants were surveyed online in five events (cross-country run, Nordic ski, half-marathon run, open-water swim, and road cycling), out of which 2329 were identified as pursuing a portfolio strategy. The major contributions of this paper include identification of a large number of significant differences between "specialized" and "diversified" portfolios. Planning and marketing implications that can potentially enhance the attractiveness of individual and collectively marketed events are also discussed.

  • 20 Years of Nordic event and festival research: a review and future research agenda
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 21:1, s. 49-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The research output during the last two decades suggests that events and festivals are of major importance for society both internationally and in a Nordic context. Existing literature, primarily published in a Nordic context, is reviewed and organized according to three broad areas: The event and festival consumer, the event or festival as organization and the effects and interrelationships of events and festivals with society. We discuss the contribution which Nordic research has made to the Nordic School and to international event and festival research and suggest a future research agenda focusing on methods, context and theories.

  • Event quality, perceived value, satisfaction and behavioural intentions in an event context
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 21:2, s. 169-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding consumer experiences constitutes a central interest for event and destination managers. This study applies event quality incorporating affective and cognitive aspects of event experiences as a measure of the event experience. The measure is used to predict perceived value, satisfaction and behavioural intentions. The article contributes with a deeper understanding of how to measure and assess event attendees’ experiences in terms of affective and cognitive components in order to forecast event consumers’ behavioural intentions. The importance and mediating role of perceived value and satisfaction are tested. The conclusions stress the significance of affective aspects of experiences in understanding perceived value of experiences. A broader approach to the event experience is promising within an event, tourism and destination management perspective when developing existing and new event concepts as well as event portfolios.

  • The influence of serious leisure, training, and consumption on subjective well-being for sport event participants
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • People pursue leisure activities like running because it makes them feel good and Stebbins (1992) suggests that serious leisure predicts subjective well-being (SWB). However, it is unclear whether serious leisure and/or its behavioural consequences such as increased consumption, event participation or training, explain varying levels of SWB. Some of these behavioural consequences have adverse environmental impacts, and a trade-off exists between negative environmental impacts and increased levels of SWB. This study surveyed 933 runners about their level of serious leisure, consumption patterns, training, event participation, and SWB. CFA and SEM are used to test the direct effects of serious leisure and the role of selected mediators to understand their effects on SWB. The study concludes that serious leisure itself has no significant direct effect on SWB. However, athletes' engagement in training has direct positive effects on SWB. Furthermore, serious leisure, training and event participation increase other types of consumption, such as shoes, electronic equipment, cloths, etc. which have, however, no significant effect on SWB. These results advise organisers of leisure activities, such as event organisers, how to develop sustainable, yet valuable event experiences.

  • Temporary residents and permanent jobs? Second-home tourism and job creation in the construction sector
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - Abingdon-on-Thames : Taylor & Francis. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tourism is widely recognised as a significant source of economic growth and employment, but its effects on employment in sectors beyond the traditional tourism industry is under-researched. Our study explores this research gap by examining the relationship between second-home tourism and employment in the construction industry. Using a combination of registry data and official tax records, the study explores the labour market effects of second-home owners investing in these homes. We find evidence of a positive and significant correlation between the number of second homes and the size of the construction sector within local economies. In particular, the effect stems from second homes owned by non-locals. In addition, we find striking spatial patterns of money flowing into construction firms from outside the local economy – considerable net flows of investments from urban to rural areas, from centre to periphery. This research contributes to the understanding of how tourism affects labour markets beyond the tourism industry. It emphasises the spatial aspects of second-home tourism, particularly in relation to the construction industry. The findings have implications for policymakers, planners, and tourism stakeholders, providing valuable insights into the economic significance of second-home tourism and its impact on local labour markets.

  • Tourism companies’ sustainability communication : creating legitimacy and value
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - UK : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 21:5, s. 475-493
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to explore the sustainability values that tourism companies communicate to stakeholders. The following two research questions are addressed: What sustainability value (economic, social, or environmental) do tourism companies focus on and communicate in their sustainability information? Do different types of tourism companies provide different sustainability communications to stakeholders to gain legitimacy? A case study was conducted of 30 Swedish-based tourism companies. Written documents that were available online concerning sustainability information from these companies were analysed using the GRI model. The results show that tourism companies work to create value with the help of sustainability. The results also indicate that the context and prerequisites for each type of tourism company govern what they work with in order to meet the demands of stakeholders. The study's theoretical contribution is that sustainability communication to stakeholders can be of value to tourism companies. Its practical contribution is that, in addition to pursuing sustainability, tourism companies should communicate their sustainability work to their stakeholders in order to create value.

  • 20 Years of Nordic Place Branding Research : A Review and Future Research Agenda
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 21:1, s. 70-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past 20 years, the Nordic region has fostered a distinct place branding scholarship and practice. This paper briefly revisits hallmark contributions that founded and shaped Nordic place branding and argues that by today, the Nordic approach earned widespread international acknowledgement. The Nordic region offers more than a regional context of place branding; its cultural and geo-political idiosyncrasies greatly affect the axiological position of place branding research. By positioning Nordic place branding research on the global scene, the paper outlines the contours of a hybrid scholarly approach (the Nordic wave), which bridges across managerial and critical schools of branding and promotes a more extroverted knowledge collaboration with branding practitioners. The paper concludes with discussing the potential the NordicWave for future place branding endeavours.

  • Environmental concerns in nature-based events : the permit process for organised outdoor recreation and sport
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 23:2-3, s. 176-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Jämtland in Northern Sweden is one of the most tourism and eventintense regions in the country. The rise in volume of events in alpine and subarctic nature environments, and the subsequent increase in participants, requires closer scrutiny of the environmental impacts. The region is characterised by mountains, forests and a sensitive ecological environment, and shared by several land users. With this study, we aim to gain in-depth knowledge of how environmental impacts are understood and valued in the regional assessment process for nature-based events and organised outdoor recreation. We analyse permit documents from the County Administrative Board of Jämtland from 2011 to 2020. The results show that most events were approved, and none were rejected solely due to environmental concerns. Assessments were instead balanced against other considerations, such as local development and economic gains. We argue that these priorities make nature a commercial arena for events, visitors and recreationists. This paper sheds light on human use and the associated environmental effects that further increase the pressure on nature. We end with managerial implications and propose that the permit process can be improved and integrated into spatial planning.
