  • Employer Branding: COVID Impact on IT Companies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IT Professional Magazine. - : IEEE. - 1520-9202 .- 1941-045X. ; 24:4, s. 8-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Strategic talent management remains challenging for IT companies, especially since the COVID pandemic. This challenge is due mainly to the limited supply of highly skilled prospects. Add high workforce mobility to the mix, resulting in considerable hiring, training, and development costs. Employer Branding is an effective tool to help IT employers overcome these challenges and attract employees to these employers. Employer Branding is a strategy that firms can utilize to manage their reputation as a “great place to work.” With the proliferation of social media, review sites, and electronic word of mouth, this reputation has increasingly been influenced by the evaluations employees share publicly and access on those platforms, especially employer review sites. IT firms must understand what values matter most to employees to manage their brands effectively. Based on a content analysis of 94,365 employee reviews, this research evaluates eight values that IT professionals consider when evaluating IT employers. This article expands on previous research and looks at employees’ reactions to those values before and after COVID. By comparing the results of pre-COVID and after COVID, we can see which values are most important to employees and provide recommendations for IT firms on how they can use employer brand value propositions to attract and retain IT talent post-COVID.

  • Defining Quality of Experience for the Internet of Things
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IT Professional Magazine. - USA : IEEE. - 1520-9202 .- 1941-045X. ; 22:5, s. 62-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Internet of Things (IoT) brings a set of unique and complex challenges to the field of Quality of Experience (QoE) evaluation. The state-of-the-art research in QoE mainly targets multimedia services, such as voice, video, and the Web, to determine quality perceived by end-users. Therein, main evaluation metrics involve subjective and objective human factors and network quality factors. Emerging IoT may also include intelligent machines within services, such as health-care, logistics, and manufacturing. The integration of new technologies such as machine-to-machine communications and artificial intelligence within IoT services may lead to service quality degradation caused by machines. In this article, we argue that evaluating QoE in the IoT services should also involve novel metrics for measuring the performance of the machines alongside metrics for end-users' QoE. This article extends the legacy QoE definition in the area of IoT and defines conceptual metrics for evaluating QoE using an industrial IoT case study.

  • The Rise of Open Source Program Office
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IT Professional Magazine. - : IEEE. - 1520-9202 .- 1941-045X. ; 23:1, s. 27-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of open-source software in business development has grown in the past five years. The rise of open source software has grabbed the attention of every industry such as e-commerce, fintech, cybersecurity, telecom, automotive, aviation, etc. This study aims to investigate how companies set up an open source program office (OSPO) to unlock the potential of OSS and to show the roadmap to set up an OSPO. We conducted two semi-structured interviews in two companies to identify the key components of open source operations. We found out that company A is more mature in open source operations compared to company B.

  • "All Around Me Are Synthetic Faces" : The Mad World of AI-Generated Media
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IT Professional Magazine. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1520-9202 .- 1941-045X. ; 22:5, s. 90-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advances in artificial intelligence and deep neural networks have led to a rise in synthetic media, i.e., automatically and artificially generated or manipulated photo, audio, and video content. Synthetic media today is highly believable and "true to life"; so much so that we will no longer be able to trust what we see or hear is unadulterated and genuine. Among the different forms of synthetic media, the most concerning forms are deepfakes and general adversarial networks (GANs). For IT professionals, it is important to understand what these new phenomena are. In this article, we explain what deepfakes and GANs are, how they work and discuss the threats and opportunities resulting from these forms of synthetic media.

  • Strategic Prototyping Technology Adoption in Startups: Framework, Challenges, and Opportunities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IT Professional: technology solutions for the enterprise. - 1520-9202. ; 24:3, s. 88-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Startups use prototyping to develop and validate their products and business models. For startups, it is important to have a good knowledge of relevant adoption factors, to make decisions regarding which prototyping technology to adopt. In this article, we identify such factors based on our practical experiences of startups in various industries. We define a research framework, describe challenges affecting the factors, and present opportunities for startups to improve their adoption process.

  • Evidence-Based Guidelines for Advancing Continuous Experimentation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IT Professional: technology solutions for the enterprise. - 1520-9202.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Continuous experimentation (CE) is used by many internet-facing companies to improve the value of their products based on user feedback gathered, e.g. through on-line experiments using A/B testing. Frameworks and theories for CE have been derived through academic research from applications in large internet facing companies. To assist practitioners in a broader range of companies, we herein present guidelines for CE, based on empirical data from interviews with 27 practitioners at 12 companies of varying sizes and CE maturity. The guidelines include advise derived from our (previously published) theory of factors that affect CE (FACE). These practitioner guidelines may assist companies in making informed decisions concerning their CE practices and contribute to efficient and effective experimentation. Our advice includes building processes and infrastructure gradually, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, focusing on goals and incentives for CE, and being mindful of ethics.
