  • The Experience of Immersive Virtual Reality : A Phenomenology Inspired Inquiry
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 52, s. 782-814
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • mmersive Virtual Reality (IVR) technology is becoming central for Information Systems (IS) research. However, existing studies in IS fall short of providing insights into how the IVR experience becomes meaningful for end-users. To increase granularity and specificity in this regard, researchers have suggested that the IVR experience can become meaningful due to its fleeting feeling of escapism. In this paper, I explore and characterize how individuals use the IVR experience to create meaning in the context of meaningful escapism, by undertaking a phenomenology inspired inquiry, based on Heideggerian views on meaning, meaningfulness, and world. Interviews and analysis were conducted within an empirical case of IVR fire safety training. As a result, four characteristics of the IVR experience as a meaningful form of escapism were unveiled: a sense of content, a sense of familiarity, a sense of mood, and a sense of care. Throughout this study, I offer a nuanced perspective on how the characteristics contribute to clarifyingthe distinctions and relationship between meaning and meaningfulness, as well as how the IVR experience becomes a meaningful escapism that provides an alternative of individual’s being-in-the-world, into a being-in-the-virtual-world, also known as Virtual Dasein. Further, this study contributes to the IS field by advancing the current discourse on IVR research and escapism, from a phenomenological perspective.

  • Ethics in Information Systems and Design Science Research : Five Perspectives
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 50:1, s. 589-616
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While ethics are recognized as an integral part of information systems (IS) research, many questions about the role of ethics in research practice remain unanswered. Our report responds to this emerging set of concerns with a broad and integrative account of five perspectives on ethics in IS research and design science research (DSR) in particular. Our report is informed by a broad literature review, a panel discussion at DESRIST 2020, and substantial personal experience from wrestling with ethical considerations in the field. The report provides a comprehensive discussion of prevailing perspectives on ethics and the implications for IS research. Together, we hope the report will inspire more ethics-conscious and responsible IS research. © 2022 by the Association for Information Systems.

  • Orchestrating digital innovation: The case of the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 48, s. 248-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is increasing interest in how digital innovation is facilitated and enacted in networks of diverse actors, i.e. heterogenous networks. However, while there is considerable evidence that firms can build key capabilities through engagement with external partners, we find a dearth of studies on how digital innovation is orchestrated in situations where an academic unit plays a facilitating role in the heterogenous network. We address this question employing a dynamic capabilities approach, and focusing on experiences from a national academic initiative, the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation (SCDI). SCDI was formed in 2013 and has adopted an engaged scholarship approach and a combination of activities designed to increase digital capabilities among partner organizations. We argue that the acquisition of new knowledge through external and internal sources stimulates firms and public sector organizations engaged in digital innovation to integrate such new knowledge with existing knowledge. Specifically, we demonstrate how SCDI’s core activities create increased integrative capabilities for the involved stakeholders, as well as offer lessons-learned and recommendations for academic units that wish to orchestrate digital innovation.

  • Practicing What We Preach? Reflections on More Sustainable and Responsible IS Research and Teaching Practices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 51:1, s. 557-580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on IS solutions for environmental sustainability have evolved to a modest, but firm body of knowledge. Despite this progressive understanding about the potential of IS in enabling environmental sustainability, our academic practices seem widely unaffected by these insights. The way we do research or conduct teaching is rarely influenced by sustainability considerations. For example, before the pandemic many of us belonged to a hypermobile group that travelled 5-6 times more than the average employee. Our research is also often not aligned with environmental goals. We research digital technologies without sufficiently acknowledging the significant amounts of resources they consume. Similarly, our teaching often focuses on the effective development and use of information systems; however, rebound, second order, or spillover effects are barely covered. Based on these observations we raise the question: Are we practicing enough of what we preach? While recognizing several efforts of IS researchers, we can no longer ignore the ‘environmental elephant in the room’. In our panel report, we discuss the status-quo and ideas to improve the environmental and societal impact of our academic practices and present three ideas to move forward: Leverage virtualization and limit air travel, overhaul teaching curricula, and recalibrate incentives and evaluation regimes.

  • Understanding the Digital Companions of Our Future Generation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 52:18, s. 465-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main protagonist in Kazuo Ishiguro's latest novel is Klara, an artificial friend whose existential goal is to be a child's companion. Some aspects of this fictional narrative have begun to gradually enter our daily lives. Products reminiscent of Klara are available abundantly on the market: smart toys, adaptive learning applications, and companion robots. Children can relate to these products and perform activities together with them. Preliminary research has shown fundamental differences between existing technologies and these emerging children's digital companions. However, we still do not know much about their benefits and risks. This paper explores different and even contradicting perspectives on the phenomenon. We present the discussion from four perspectives -1) temporality, 2) use, 3) trust and ethics, and 4) sociotechnical design -and conclude the paper with an agenda for interdisciplinary IS research. The agenda points to the need for a psychological, medical, engineering, and temporal research community to understand this emerging sociotechnical phenomenon and design its future for the better.

  • What is E-Government? Introducing a Work System Framework for Understanding E-Government
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : ASSOC INFORMATION SYSTEMS. - 1529-3181. ; 48, s. 503-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a comprehensive and distilled model that can help researchers to 1) enter the e-government field, 2) understand what the field mainly studies in a distilled way, and 3) reflect on further research in the field. Departing from Steven Alters (2013) work systems theory and particularly his work systems framework (WSF), we introduce a framework for understanding e-government work systems (i.e., the eGovWSF). We distil the basic core of e-government work systems through an interpretative and hermeneutic approach by building on previous research and theorizations made in information systems and e-government research. We unpack the eGovWSF into 12 main elements; discuss their role as internal, semi-external, and external to e-government work systems; and reflect on the connections between these elements. Thus, contributions include a conceptual discussion on e-governments core subject matter, the frameworks applicability, and future research needs.

  • Semi-Confusing Information Systems Revisited: The Role of Inefficiencies in the Enactment of Ambidexterity
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 47, s. 452-475
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Forty years ago, Bo Hedberg and Sten Jönsson proposed the notion of semi-confusing information systems as a desired state for organizations operating in dynamic environments. Core to the idea was that mere efficiency is not enough for long-term success, but that organizations also require a certain amount of inefficiency. These ideas resonate within the growing literature on organizational ambidexterity, in which the dynamic balancing of exploration and exploitation is deemed a prerequisite for long-term performance. This study utilizes the design characteristics of semi-confusing information systems as a lens for secondary analysis of a case of new product development in a global, automotive organization. The findings show that inefficiencies in the new product development process correspond to the proposed design characteristics of semi-confusing information systems, opening up for a new take on the role of inefficiencies in the enactment of ambidexterity. The identified inefficiencies are manifested in unsanctioned repertoires which result in increased variety. In addition, the level of compliance with semi-confusing information systems characteristics is found to impact both the ambidextrous balance and the decentralization of the enactment of ambidexterity.

  • Development of an Agile Requirements Risk Prioritization Method : A Design Science Research Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 52, s. 609-637
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The practice of information systems development (ISD) has changed during the past two decades from very structured approaches to agile ISD methods. However, in the literature many methods available for managing requirements-related risks follow a structured approach to ISD. Few, if any, available methods offer solutions that prioritize requirements risks for agile ISD projects based on recognizing requirements-related risks and patterns in order to mitigate these. To fill this gap in the literature, we apply the design science research methodology to develop an agile requirements risk prioritization method together with industry experts (n=54) in Finland and New Zealand in a multi-year study. The method was developed by applying contingency theory, and our study makes an artifactual contribution to the literature. The method helps practitioners prioritize the overall requirements-related risks for ISD projects.

  • Researching Digital Entrepreneurship: Current Issues and Suggestions for Future Directions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 48, s. 284-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This report documents the outcomes of a professional development workshop (PDW) held at the 40th International Conference on Information Systems in Munich, Germany. The workshop focused on identifying how information systems (IS) researchers can contribute to enriching our knowledge about digital entrepreneurship-that is, the point at which digital technologies and entrepreneurship intersect. The PDW assembled numerous IS researchers working on different aspects of digital entrepreneurship. Jointly, we delineated digital entrepreneurship from related phenomena and conceptualized the different roles that digital technologies can have in entrepreneurial endeavors. We also identified relevant strategies, opportunities, and challenges in conducting digital entrepreneurship research. This report summarizes the shared views that emerged from the interactions at the PDW and our collaborative effort to write this report. The report provides IS researchers interested in digital entrepreneurship with food for thought and a foundation for future research.
