  • Users’ participation in requirements gathering for smart phones applications in emerging markets
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Universal Access in the Information Society. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1615-5289 .- 1615-5297. ; 14:2, s. 265-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents insights from using requirements gathering techniques for country-specific customization of smart phones in two emerging markets, Iran and Turkey. In each country, a group of users participated in requirements gathering sessions that were aimed at developing design ideas for overcoming country-specific usability problems. Using qualitative content analysis, it was found that in each country some specific interaction activities were considered more when participants generated design ideas for country-specific usability problems. It was also found that even for similar usability problems, participants suggested country-specific solutions. Therefore, it is suggested that participation of local users in the design process should not be limited to identification of usability problems, but should also include the problem-solving phase that is usually a phase in design and development processes in which requirements gathering techniques are being used.

  • A reflection on interdisciplinarity research in universal design toward sustainability
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Universal Access in the Information Society. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 1615-5289 .- 1615-5297. ; 16:1, s. 73-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of universal design (UD) is growing from its devised domain of accessibility, thus becoming a stimulating research topic reaching further beyond the field of human/computer interaction. An inspiring characteristic of the universally designed end product and its value to the user would be its nature of sustainability. However, the many factors of that quality are yet to be fully learned by the practice and application of UD. One way to resolve this problem is to expand the UD research toward interdisciplinary practice. In this paper, the status of UD and its relationship to sustainability in terms of its possibility and perspective with interdisciplinary research are analyzed. A framework unfolds which explains and argues how interdisciplinary research could help UD advance toward the aim of sustainability. The proposed theoretical framework would open new research opportunities to expand the UD concepts along the path of creating holistic values on sustainability.

  • Universal design, inclusive design, accessible design, design for all : different concepts—one goal? On the concept of accessibility—historical, methodological and philosophical aspects
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Universal Access in the Information Society. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1615-5289 .- 1615-5297. ; 14:4, s. 505-526
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accessibility and equal opportunities for all in the digital age have become increasingly important over the last decade. In one form or another, the concept of accessibility is being considered to a greater or smaller extent in most projects that develop interactive systems. However, the concept varies among different professions, cultures and interest groups. Design for all, universal access and inclusive design are all different names of approaches that largely focus on increasing the accessibility of the interactive system for the widest possible range of use. But, in what way do all these concepts differ and what is the underlying philosophy in all of these concepts? This paper aims at investigating the various concepts used for accessibility, its methodological and historical development and some philosophical aspects of the concept. It can be concluded that there is little or no consensus regarding the definition and use of the concept, and consequently, there is a risk of bringing less accessibility to the target audience. Particularly in international standardization the lack of consensus is striking. Based on this discussion, the authors argue for a much more thorough definition of the concept and discuss what effects it may have on measurability, conformance with standards and the overall usability for the widest possible range of target users.
