  • Realism and Scientific Failure
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Kvantifikator för en Dag. Essays Dedicated to Dag Westerståhl on his Sixtieth Birthday, ss. 1-20.. - 1652-0459.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Originally put forward by Smart and Maxwell in the 1960’s, and later revived by Putnam (1975) and Boyd (1984), the no miracle argument for scientific realism has been much discussed. In this paper, I try to repudiate an anti- realist charge of circularity on the argument, here further scrutinized through a recent formulation due to Stathis Psillos (1999). Moreover, I attempt to turn the tables around on the anti-realists by arguing that they can hardly be said be able to explain the disheartening historical picture suggested by some of their own arguments, especially the ones pertaining to the famous pessimistic induction.

  • McDowell's Naturalism
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Kvantifikator för en Dag. Essays Dedicated to Dag Westerståhl on his Sixtieth Birthday. - 1652-0459. ; , s. 37-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is an essay on McDowell’s naturalism. It is, pace some commentators, argued that McDowell’s naturalism does not end up in any strange metaphysical positions in the philosophy of mind, because second nature non-reductively supervenes on first nature and have causal powers. Pace certain other commentators, it is also argued that McDowell can be read as drawing a clear line between ethical platonism, and his own naturalized platonism, but only at the cost of landing in standard naturalism.

  • Commentary on Lycan's "Conditional-Assertion Theories of Conditionals"
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Philosophical Communications, Web Series. - 1652-0459. ; :43, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Argues (a) that Lycan underestimates the plausibility of analyses of interrogative and imperative conditionals in terms of conditional communicative intentions and deconstructs "the simple illocutionary theory" in ways that hides its main resources for handling the kind of difficulties that Lycan is raising, and (b) that the simple theory still fails because of its constitutional inability to deal with the multitude of communicative purposes for which declarative conditionals are normally used, something which is inherent in the nesting difficulties raised by Lycan.

  • Learning Continuous Attractors
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Philosophical Communications, Web Series. - 1652-0459. ; :44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Neural systems with continuous attractors have been invoked in explanations of spatial memory and the control of eye movements. Line attractors have also been implicated in cellular and synaptic memory. In the present paper, formal conditions for the existence of continuous attractors with learning properties in two-dimensional dynamic systems are derived. Some actual and hypothetical biological examples of such learning continuous attractors are discussed, with special emphasis on subcellular mechanisms. It is argued that such systems may underly not only short-term and synaptic memory, but also the micro-genesis of perceptions. The theory of learning continuous attractors is placed in the context of a cybernetic theory of learning, in which learning is a necessary consequence of feedback in dynamic systems that can simulate input. Key words: continuous attractors, dynamic systems, memory, perception

  • Naturalist Farewells to Philosophy: A Note
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Kvantifikator för en Dag: Essays Dedicated to Dag Westerståhl on his Sixtieth Birthday. - 1652-0459.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A recurring theme in philosophy is the suggestion that there are philosophical reasons to stop doing philosophy. This general idea is briefly sketched with regard to its various versions, other reasons to abandon philosophy, proposals regarding revisions of philosophy and possible paradoxical implications. Three uniting sub-themes of otherwise very different suggestions on what is the alleged reason to abandon philosophy are discerned. Of these, implied ideas of what philosophy is are subjected to some brief critical comments in connection to peculiar naturalist versions of the farewell to philosophy theme.
