  • Evaluation of perceived spatial audio quality
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics. - 1690-4532 .- 1690-4524. ; 4:2, s. 10-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increased use of audio applications capable of conveying enhanced spatial quality puts focus on how such a quality should be evaluated. Different approaches to evaluation of perceived quality are briefly discussed and a new technique is introduced. In a series of experiment, attributes were elicited from subjects, tested and subsequently used for derivation of evaluation scales that were feasible for subjective evaluation of the spatial quality of certain multichannel stimuli. The findings of these experiments led to the development of a novel method for evaluation of spatial audio in surround sound systems. Parts of the method were subsequently implemented in the OPAQUE software prototype designed to facilitate the elicitation process. The prototype was successfully tested in a pilot experiment. The experiments show that attribute scales derived from subjects' personal constructs are functional for evaluation of perceived spatial audio quality. Finally, conclusions on the importance of spatial quality evaluation of new applications are made.

  • Perceived properties of parameterised music for interactive applications
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics. - 1690-4532 .- 1690-4524. ; 4:2, s. 65-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional implementations of sound and music in interactive contexts have their limitations. One way to overcome these and to expand the possibilities of music is to handle the music in a parameterised form. To better understand the properties of the musical parameters resulting from parameterisation, two experiments were carried out. The first experiment investigated selected parameters' capability to change the music; the second experiment examined how the parameters can contribute to express emotions. From these experiments, it is concluded that users without musical training perform differently from musicians on some of the parameters. There is also a clear association between the parameters and the expressed basic emotions. The paper is concluded with observations on how parameterisation might be used in interactive applications.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information literacy, the ability to identify, assess, retrieve, evaluate, adapt, organize and communicate information within an iterative context of review and reflection, has been recognized as a critical competency both at universities and in professional work. In higher education information literacy instruction is now being integrated into the academic curriculum and is also now being assessed like other subjects. This paper summarize and discuss how information literacy skills are assessed by librarians and faculty together in two different educational programs at Linköping University and the outcomes of such efforts. The similarities between the two programs, although different approaches, is the importance of tying information literacy assessment methods to leaning outcomes and to prepare students for future professional life.

  • Knowledge Generation as Natural Computation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics. - 1690-4532 .- 1690-4524. ; 6:2, s. 12-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge generation can be naturalized by adopting computational model of cognition and evolutionary approach. In this framework knowledge is seen as a result of the structuring of input data (data ¨ information ¨ knowledge) by an interactive computational process going on in the agent during the adaptive interplay with the environment, which clearly presents developmental advantage by increasing agentfs ability to cope with the situation dynamics. This paper addresses the mechanism of knowledge generation, a process that may be modeled as natural computation in order to be better understood and improved.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a demand for increased cooperation between higher education institutes and surrounding society, and different frameworks for such cooperation have been developed. University West in Sweden has a profile calledwork-integrated learning which could be regarded as a systematical approach for combining theory and practice.Actually work-integrated learning has become an ideologyfor the University which permeates all activities, i.e. education, research and cooperation with surrounding society. This article is a review, explaining and exemplifying our approach. We will also discuss strategies and challenges for bringing the relationship between theory and practice into a prospering marriage.

  • Predicting performance of students in a flipped classroom using machine learning : towards automated data-driven formative feedback
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics. - 1690-4532 .- 1690-4524. ; 17:4, s. 17-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Learning analytics (LA) is a relatively new research discipline that uses data to try to improve learning, optimizing the learning process and develop the environment in which learning occurs. One of the objectives of LA is to monitor students activities and early predict performance to improve retention, offer personalized feedback and facilitate the provision of support to the students. Flipped classroom is one of the pedagogical methods that find strength in the combination of physical and digital environments i.e. blended learning environments. Flipped classroom often make use of learning management systems in which video-recorded lectures and digital material is made available, which thus generates data about students interactions with these materials. In this paper, we report on a study conducted with focus on a flipped learning course in research methodology. Based on data regarding how students interact with course material (video recorded lectures and reading material), how they interact with teachers and other peers in discussion forums, and how they perform on a digital assessment (digital quiz), we apply machine learning methods (i.e. Neural Networks, Nave Bayes, Random Forest, kNN, and Logistic regression) in order to predict students overall performance on the course. The final predictive model that we present in this paper could with fairly high accuracy predict low- and high achievers in the course based on activity and early assessment data. Using this approach, we are given opportunities to develop learning management systems that provide automatic datadriven formative feedback that can help students to selfregulate as well as inform teachers where and how to intervene and scaffold students.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an ongoing research project of use and learning with geographic information visualization and Visual Storytelling (geovisual analytics) in education. The fully developed study will be applied in school settings in order to 1) customize the application for educational purpose, 2) improve the teaching in social science and 3) study teachers and students experiences and learning. - The application "Open Statistics eXplorer" will be used to improve the students knowledge and understanding of sophisticated statistical relations, - Teachers will be able to, individually and together, develop a dynamic teaching material through storytelling, through the web, - Students will be able to, with help of powerful geographical statistics, explore statistical relations on their own. A better understanding of how educators and their students can elicit deeper user understanding and participation by exploiting dynamic web-enabled statistics visualization is of importance. Results from an usability study in this project are promising. Together with the associated science of perception in learning in relation to the use of multidimensional spatio-temporal statistical data this research will contribute to the research fields of geovisual analytics as well as educational science.

  • Automatic Generation of Object Models for Process Planning and Control Purposes using an International standard for Information Exchange
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics. - 1690-4524. ; 1:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a formal mapping between static information models and dynamic models is presented. The static information models are given according to an international standard for product, process and resource information exchange, (ISO 10303-214). The dynamic models are described as Discrete Event Systems. The product, process and resource information is automatically converted into product routes and used for simulation, controller synthesis and verification. A high level language, combining Petri nets and process algebra, is presented and used for speci- fication of desired routes. A main implication of the presented method is that it enables the reuse of process information when creating dynamic models for process control. This method also enables simulation and verification to be conducted early in the development chain.
