- The crystallization temperature, Tx, was determined at constant heating rate, R = dṪ/dt ≅ 7 K min−1, by monitoring the electrical resistance. Such experiments were carried out under pressures up to 2.5 GPa, and the resulting dTx/dP was 15.9 K GPa−1 for (Fe65Ni35)75P16B6Al3 and 8.7 K GPa−1, 8.1 K GPa−1 for the two crystallization processes in Ti50Be40Zr10. The activation energies of crystallization under atmospheric pressure were obtained from measurements of Tx at rates from 0.05 K min−1 −55 K min−1, analysed by plotting ln(Tx2R−1) versus Tx−1.

- The extent of complexation of aluminum(III) with DNA (Calf thymus, Sigma type I) was estimated by means of two experimental techniques: potentiometric titration with a fluoride selective indicator electrode and dialysis followed by aluminum determination by graphite furnace AAS. Both types of experiments indicate that aluminum(III) is bound to DNA. The data are treated by assuming an ion exchange reaction with the phosphate diester groups. Using Rt to denote the concentration of these groups the values of log [AlMn-3R]/(Rt-3[AlMn-3R])[Al3+] decrease from approx. 7.6 to 5.6 when the concentration of sodium chloride is increased from 1 to 100 mM. In the pH range 4.5-5.5 the ion exchange constant increases approximately 0.5 log units. Dialysis gives lower values for the complex formation constant than potentiometry.

- The 2-deoxy (7), 6-O-methyl (15), 6-deoxy (22), and 6-deoxy-6-fluoro (31) derivatives of methyl β-d-galabioside (1) have been synthesised. Thus, 7 was prepared by xanthate reduction using tributyltin hydride, whereas 22 was obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of a 6-deoxy-6-iodogalabioside. Regioselective mono-fluorination of methyl 2,3-di-O-benzoyl-β-d-galactopyranoside with Et2NSF3 and subsequent α-d-galactosylation provided 31. Molecular mechanics calculations yielded similar conformations for 1, 7, 15, 22, and 31 with differes in φH and ψH of 5°. No indications of intramolecular hydrogen bonds, as displayed by 1 in the crystal, were found for 7, 15, 22, or 31.

- The cardiovascular effects of the IV infusion of TRH were studied in the rat. TRH tended to increase the MAP and markedly increased the CBF(tot) in the control group, in vagotomized animals and in methylatropine-pretreated rats. A marked vasodilation was noted in the pancreas, gastric mucosa, duodenum and cardiac muscle. This effect was turned to vasoconstriction, the heart excluded, in vagotomized animals. Muscarinic blockade attenuated the vasodilating effect of TRH in the duodenum and gastric mucosa. The results indicate that TRH elicits cerebral vasodilation and a partly nonmuscarinic parasympathetically mediated vasodilation in several gastrointestinal organs in parallel with a vasoconstriction which is unmasked by vagotomy.

- College students were required to train heart rate control (heart rate increase and decrease) with visual feedback for three sessions in a within-person design. In the second and third sessions a test period was added when electric shocks were delivered during half in the trials. Subjects had been grouped in advance in an Aware and an Unaware group on the basis of the Automatic Perception Questionnaire (APQ).The results contradicted some findings by other authors which claim that biofeedback can be used to ameliorate subjective effects of aversive stimulation. Alternative interpretations of the discrepant findings were discussed in terms of expectancy effects that may influence autonomically Aware subjects more strongly than Unaware subjects.

- alpha 1-Adrenergic activation of isolated brown adipocytes causes a rapid mobilization of intracellular Ca2+. The cells also respond with an increased turnover of inositol lipids. The present work demonstrates that alpha 1-adrenergic stimulation of brown adipocytes results in phospholipase C-mediated breakdown of phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate to form inositol trisphosphate. The rate of appearance of inositol trisphosphate is sufficiently rapid for it to mediate or contribute to Ca2+ mobilization in these cells.

Application of a sulphide-selective electrode in the absence of a pH-buffer

- Calibration of a sulphide electrode in the pH-range 9-12 has been studied as an e.m.f. vs. (pH - p[HS-]) function by measuring e.m.f. and pH in parallel. Calibration can also be done in this pH range by using a differential amplifier with a three-electrode measuring cell (glass, sulphide-selective and reference electrodes). The effects of an antioxidant (ascorbic acid) and a complexing agent (DCTA) on the calibration of the glass-sulphide electrode cell at pH < 5 were studied. The applicability of this end-point indicator cell has been demonstrated for titrations of Ag+, Pb2+ and Bi3+ with Na2S.
