  • Active seismic characterization experiments of the Hontomin research facility for geological storage of CO2, Spain
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1750-5836 .- 1878-0148. ; 19:0, s. 785-795
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An active source seismic experiment was carried out as part of the subsurface characterization study of the first Spanish Underground Research Facility for Geological Storage of CO2 in Hontomín (Burgos, Spain). The characterization experiment included a 36 km2 3D seismic reflection survey and two three-component seismic profiles. The target reservoir is a saline aquifer located at 1450 m depth within Lower Jurassic carbonates (Lias). The main seal is formed by interlayered marlstones and marly limestones of Early to Middle Jurassic age (Dogger and Lias). The seismic images obtained allow defining the 3D underground architecture of the reservoir site. The structure consists of an asymmetric dome crosscut by a relatively complex fault system. The detailed characterization of the fracture system is currently under study to unravel the geometric distribution of the faults and their extent within the different formations that form the structure. The constrained model has guided the design of the injection and monitoring boreholes and provided the data for the baseline study. The resultant high resolution seismic model will be used as a reference in future monitoring stages.

  • Scenario simulations of CO(2) injection feasibility, plume migration and storage in a saline aquifer, Scania, Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1750-5836 .- 1878-0148. ; 5:5, s. 1303-1318
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deep saline aquifers have large capacity for geological CO(2) storage, but are generally not as well characterized as petroleum reservoirs. We here aim at quantifying effects of uncertain hydraulic parameters and uncertain stratigraphy on CO(2) injectivity and migration, and provide a first feasibility study of pilot-scale CO(2) injection into a multilayered saline aquifer system in southwest Scania, Sweden. Four main scenarios are developed, corresponding to different possible interpretations of available site data. Simulation results show that, on the one hand, stratigraphic uncertainty (presence/absence of a thin mudstone/claystone layer above the target storage formation) leads to large differences in predicted CO(2) storage in the target formation at the end of the test (ranging between 11% and 98% of injected CO(2) remaining), whereas other parameter uncertainty (in formation and cap rock permeabilities) has small impact. On the other hand, the latter has large impact on predicted injectivity, on which stratigraphic uncertainty has small impact. Salt precipitation at the border of the target storage formation affects CO(2) injectivity for all considered scenarios and injection rates. At low injection rates, salt is deposited also within the formation, considerably reducing its availability for CO(2) storage.

  • Design of a two-well field test to determine in situ residual and dissolution trapping of CO2 applied to the Heletz CO2 injection site
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1750-5836 .- 1878-0148. ; 19, s. 642-651
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Field testing is a critical step to improve our knowledge on in situ-trapping mechanisms of CO2 injected in geological formations and their relative importance. In this study, we present a two-well test sequence aimed at quantifying field values of both residual and dissolution trapping of CO2. Then, we apply it to the Heletz experimental CO2 injection site, using numerical modelling. The sequence includes a hydraulic test to measure residual scCO(2) saturation and a novel tracer technique, together with measurements of abstracted fluid compositions for quantification of the rate of CO2 dissolution in the reservoir. The proposed tracer technique uses a tracer with negligible aqueous solubility, which is injected with the scCO(2) and enriched in the scCO(2) phase as CO2 dissolves. We show that this tracer can provide direct information about the dissolution of mobile scCO(2). We also show that the rate of abstracted dissolved CO2 can be used to predict the total rate of CO2 dissolution, provided that the amount of dissolved CO2 in the formation stabilizes, and that this can be achieved with the proposed abstraction scheme. We conclude that the combination of these measurements is a promising tool for detailed field-scale characterization of residual and dissolution trapping processes.

  • Numerical simulation of radiation intensity of oxy-coal combustion with flue gas recirculation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1750-5836 .- 1878-0148. ; 17, s. 473-480
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oxy-fuel combustion is one of potential technologies for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture in fossil fuel fired power plants. Characterization of flue gas composition in the oxy-fuel combustion differs from that of conventional air-coal combustion, which results in the change of radiative heat transfer in combustion processes. This paper presents a numerical study of radiation intensity on lateral walls based on the experimental results of a 0.5MW combustion test facility (CTF). Differences in the oxy-coal combustion are analyzed, such as flue gas recycle, absorption coefficient and radiation intensity. The simulation results show that an effective O2 concentration ([O2]effective) between 29 and 33vol% (equivalent to the flue gas recycle ratio of 72-69%) constitutes a reasonable range, within this range the behavior of oxy-coal combustion is similar to air-coal combustion. Compared with the air-coal combustion, the lower limit (29vol%) of this range results in a similar radiative heat flux at the region closed to the burner, but a lower radiative heat flux in the downstream region of the CTF; the upper limit (33vol%) of this range results in a higher radiative heat flux at the region closed to the burner, while a similar radiative heat flux in the downstream region of the CTF.

  • Impact of temperature on CO2 storage at the Ketzin site based on fluid flow simulations and seismic data
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1750-5836 .- 1878-0148. ; 19, s. 775-784
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Temperature is one of the main parameters influencing the properties of CO2 during storage in saline aquifers since it along with pressure and co-constituents controls the phase behavior of the CO2/brine mixture. When the CO2 replaces brine as a free gas it is well known to affect the elastic properties of porous media considerably. In order to track the migration of geologically stored CO2 at the Ketzin site, 3D time-lapse seismic data were acquired by means of a baseline (pre-injection) survey in autumn 2005 and a first monitor survey in autumn 2009. During this period the temperature in the storage reservoir near the injection well was observed to have increased from 34 °C to 38 °C.This temperature increase led us to investigate the potential impact of temperature on the seismic response to the CO2 injection and on the CO2 mass estimations based on the Ketzin 4D seismic data. Two temperature scenarios in the reservoir (34 °C and 38 °C) were studied using multiphase fluid flow modeling. The simulations show that the impact of temperature on the seismic response is minor, but that the impact of the temperature on the CO2 mass estimations is significant and can, with the help of the multiphase fluid flow simulations, be explained mostly by the impact on the density of the CO2.

  • Feasibility of integrating solar energy into a power plant with amine-based chemical absorption for CO2 capture
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1750-5836 .- 1878-0148. ; 9, s. 272-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solar thermal energy has the potential to supply the thermal demand of stripper reboiler in the power plant with amine-based post combustion CO2 capture. The performance of a power plant integrated with solar assisted post combustion CO2 capture (SCC) is largely affected by the local climatic conditions, such as solar irradiation, sunshine hours and ambient temperature, the type of solar thermal collector and CO2 recovery ratio. The feasibility evaluation results about such a power plant show that the cost of electricity (COE) and cost of CO2 avoidance (COA) are mainly determined by the local climatic conditions. For the locations having higher solar irradiation, longer sunshine hours and higher ambient temperature, the power plant with SCC has lower COE and COA. COE and COA are sensitive to the prices of solar thermal collectors. In order to achieve lower COE and COA compared to the power plant integrated with non-solar assisted post combustion capture, the price of solar thermal collector has to be lower than 150 USD/m(2) and 90 USD/m(2) for the solar trough and vacuum tube, respectively.

  • Viscosities, thermal conductivities and diffusion coefficients of CO2 mixtures:Review of experimental data and theoretical models
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1750-5836 .- 1878-0148. ; 5:5, s. 1119-1139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accurate experimental data on the thermo-physical properties of CO2-mixtures are pre-requisites fordevelopment of more accurate models and hence, more precise design of CO2 capture and storage (CCS)processes. A literature survey was conducted on both the available experimental data and the theoreticalmodels associated with the transport properties of CO2-mixtures within the operation windows ofCCS. Gaps were identified between the available knowledge and requirements of the system design andoperation. For the experimental gas-phase measurements, there are no available data about any transportproperties of CO2/H2S, CO2/COS and CO2/NH3; and except for CO2/H2O(/NaCl) and CO2/amine/H2Omixtures, there are no available measurements regarding the transport properties of any liquid-phasemixtures. In the prediction of gas-phase viscosities using Chapman–Enskog theory, deviations are typically<2% at atmospheric pressure and moderate temperatures. The deviations increase with increasingtemperatures and pressures. Using both the Rigorous Kinetic Theory (RKT) and empirical models in theprediction of gas-phase thermal conductivities, typical deviations are 2.2–9%. Comparison of popularempirical models for estimation of gas-phase diffusion coefficients with newer experimental data forCO2/H2O shows deviations of up to 20%. For many mixtures relevant for CCS, the diffusion coefficientmodels based on the RKT show predictions within the experimental uncertainty. Typical reported deviationsof the CO2/H2O system using empirical models are below 3% for the viscosity and the thermalconductivity and between 5 and 20% for the diffusion coefficients. The research community knows littleabout the effect of other impurities in liquid CO2 than water, and this is an important area to focus infuture work.

  • Analysis of alternative push-pull-test-designs for determining in situ residual trapping of carbon dioxide
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 1750-5836 .- 1878-0148. ; 27, s. 155-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carbon dioxide storage in deep saline aquifers is a promising technique to reduce direct emissions of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. To ensure safe storage the in situ trapping mechanisms, residual trapping being one of them, need to be characterized. This study aims to compare three alternative single-well carbon dioxide push-pull test sequences for their ability to quantify residual gas trapping. The three tests are based on the proposed test sequence by Zhang et al. (2011) for estimating residual gas saturation. A new alternative way to create residual gas conditions in situ incorporating withdrawal and a novel indicator-tracer approach has been investigated. Further the value of additional pressure measurements from a nearby passive observation well was evaluated. The iTOUGH2 simulator with the EOS7C module was used for sensitivity analysis and parameter estimation. Results show that the indicator-tracer approach could be used to create residual conditions without increasing estimation uncertainty of S-gr. Additional pressure measurements from a passive observation well would reduce the uncertainty in the S-gr estimate. The findings of the study can be used to develop field experiments for site characterization.
