    • The Internet as a platform for services provision and delivery is adopted world over. To least developed countries it is further perceived as a medium for fostering development. A perception that is likely not to be easily achieved because the decisions that led to its existence in such countries never addressed the need of aligning the stakeholders' goals which inherit the misalignments in present Internet architectural model. We present a model based on AHP theory that lays strategies through which informed decisions for aligning stakeholders' goals can be made to use the Internet as medium for enhancing national development initiatives.

  • Agent-based simulation of freight transport between geographical zones

    • We present TAPAS-Z, which is an agent-based freight transport analysis model for simulation of decision-making and transport activities. TAPAS-Z is a further development of a simulation model called TAPAS, and it has improved support for simulation of transport in large geographical regions. It is based on the principles that shipments are simulated for chosen supplier-consumer relations in a geographic region, and that the geographic locations of suppliers and consumers are randomly varied for each shipment. In TAPAS-Z, one supplier represents all real-world suppliers in a geographic zone, and one consumer represents all real-world consumers in a zone. In that way, TAPAS-Z is able to capture some of the diversity in freight transport that is caused by the varying geographic locations of senders and receivers, and which is important when assessing the impact of transport policy and infrastructural measures.

  • Feasibility Study of Ubiquitous Interaction Concepts

    • There are all sorts of consumer electronics in a home environment. Using ”apps” to interact with each device is neither feasible nor practical in an ubicomp future. Prototyping and evaluating interaction concepts for this future is a challenge. This paper proposes four concepts for device discovery and device interaction implemented in a virtual environment. The interaction concepts were compared in a controlled experiment for evaluation and comparison. Some statistically significant dierences and subjective preferences could be observed in the quantitative and qualitative data respectively. Overall, the results indicate that the proposed interaction concepts were found natural and easy to use.

  • Executing PRAM Programs on GPUs

    • We present a framework to transform PRAM programs from the PRAM programming language Fork to CUDA C, so that they can be compiled and executed on a Graphics Processor (GPU). This allows to explore parallel algorithmics on a scale beyond toy problems, to which the previous, sequential PRAM simulator restricted practical use. We explain the design decisions and evaluate a prototype implementation consisting of a runtime library and a set of rules to transform simple Fork programs which we for now apply by hand. The resulting CUDA code is almost 100 times faster than the previous simulator for compiled Fork programs and allows to handle larger data sizes. Compared to a sequential program for the same problem, the GPU code might be faster or slower, depending on the Fork program structure, i.e. on the overhead incurred. We also give an outlook how future GPUs might notably reduce the overhead.

    • Real-time travel information (RTI) systems are rapidly developed and deployed worldwide using the abundance of instantaneous data and dissemination means. This paper presents a framework for a multi-agent simulation model that emulates the generation and dissemination of RTI. The evolution of transit reliability influences both the performance of RTI generation schemes and the potential benefits that such information could yield. An iterative within-day network loading and a day-to-day learning process represent both service provider and service user ability to apply and adapt their strategies based on past performance and predictions. A case study illustrates model capabilities by applying BusMezzo, an agent-based simulation model of vehicles and travellers. The proposed model facilitates the analysis of alternative prediction schemes as well as the impact of their provision on system performance.

    • Managing a technology portfolio is one of the great challenges for sustained success, especially in high-technology industries where technologies can be a major selling point. For engineers, this portfolio is more of a toolbox for solving design problems, but in large organizations there can be so many technologies used in different business areas that even the engineers may not be aware of all of them. When the same technologies are used in different types of products, knowledge about them can also be generated by various groups within an organization. To improve the usefulness of a company's technology base, this paper proposes the use of a technology platform approach based on a framework featuring three different types of activities. The first approach is about adapting the technology base to future needs with the help of portfolio management techniques. The second approach serves to create awareness and shared understanding through an interactive technology catalogue!

    • This paper describes an empirical study of decision-making when changing the architecture in embedded systems. A refactoring of the system architecture often gives effects on both system properties and functions in the company organization, and there is a lack of efficient analysis methods for decision support in the system architecture process. This study investigates the information needed to make a decision about a system refactoring. Scenario-based interviews have been conducted with managers and system architects from companies developing embedded systems. The results show that the companies investigate similar issues regardless of their industry sector. The most wanted information prior to a decision is also presented.

    • The introduction of Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessors opened up new possibilities in development of highly parallel applications. Even though the architecture allows developers to use familiar programming paradigms and techniques, high-level development of programs that utilize all available processors (host+coprocessors) in a system at the same time is a challenging task.In this paper we present a new high-level parallel library construct which makes it easy to apply a function to every member of an array in parallel. In addition, it supports the dynamic distribution of work between the host CPUs and one or more coprocessors. We describe associated runtime support and use a physical simulation example to demonstrate that our library can facilitate the creation of C++ applications that benefit significantly from hybrid execution. Experimental results show that a single optimized source code is sufficient to simultaneously exploit all of the host's CPU cores and coprocessors efficiently.

    • The ever-increasing complexity and sophistication of computer and network attacks challenge society's dependability on digital infrastructure. Digital investigations recover and reconstruct the digital trails of such events and may employ practices from various subfields (computer, network forensics), each with its own set of techniques and tools. Integration of evidence from heterogeneous sources of data (e.g. disk images, network packet captures, logs) is often a manual and time- consuming process relying significantly on the investigator's expertise. In this paper, we propose and develop an approach, based on the Semantic Web framework, for ontologically representing and integrating digital evidence. The presented approach enhances existing forensic analysis techniques by providing partial and eventually full automation of the investigative process.

    • Service discovery is central in pervasive middleware systems, built on top of the communication substrate using the more fundamental mechanisms for device discovery. In mobile pervasive systems devices come and go, and switch network frequently, demanding support for device discovery across heterogeneous networks. We present the design of a device discovery mechanism for the PalCom middleware that eliminates the need for cross-network periodic keep-alive messages while still supporting timely detection of missing devices, i.e. undiscovery. The design has been implemented and is evaluated against the simplistic approach of flooding the inter-connected networks with keep-alive messages. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
