  • Crystal chemistry and chemical order in ternary quasicrystals and approximants
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Comptes rendus. Physique. - : Elsevier BV. - 1631-0705 .- 1878-1535. ; 15:1, s. 30-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work we review our current understanding of structure, stability and formation of icosahedral quasicrystals and approximants. The work has special emphasis on Cd–Yb type phases, but several concepts are generalized to other families of icosahedral quasicrystals and approximants. The paper handles topics such as chemical order and site preference at the cluster level for ternary phases, valence electron concentration and its influence on formation and composition, fundamental building blocks and cluster linkages, and the similarities and differences between different families of icosahedral quasicrystals and approximants.

  • First-principles theory of multipolar order in actinide dioxides
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Comptes rendus. Physique. - : Elsevier BV. - 1631-0705 .- 1878-1535. ; 15:7, s. 580-586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic phase transitions that involve multipolar degrees of freedom have been widely studied during the last couple of decades, challenging the common approximation which assumes that the physical properties of a magnetic material could be effectively described by purely dipolar degrees of freedom. Due to the complexity of the problem and to the large number of competing interactions involved, the simple (fcc) crystal structure of the actinide dioxides made them the ideal playground system for such theoretical and experimental studies. In the present paper, we summarize our recent attempts to provide an ab initio description of the ordered phases of UO2, NpO2, and AmO2 by means of stateof-the-art LDA U first-principles calculations. This systematic analysis of the electronic structures is here naturally connected to the local crystalline fields of the 5f states in the actinide dioxide series. Related to these we find that the mechanisms which lead to the experimentally observed insulating ground states work in distinctly different ways for each compound. (C) 2014 The Authors. • Mechano-electronic and electro-mechanical energy transfer in mesoscopic superconducting weak links
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Comptes Rendus Physique. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-1535 .- 1631-0705. ; 13:5, s. 426-439
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this review we discuss how the nano-electro-mechanical properties of a superconducting weak link, formed by a suspended nanowire bridging two superconductors, can strongly affect mesoscopic effects in both the electronic and the mechanical subsystem. In particular we will discuss how quantum coherence and electron–electron (Coulomb) correlations may result in the possibility to resonantly redistribute energy between the electronic and mechanical degrees of freedom, allowing controllable switching between pumping and cooling of the nano-mechanical vibrations of the suspended nanowire. The two regimes of a given current and a given voltage supplied to the nano-electro-mechanical weak link is considered, resulting respectively in the possibility of ground-state cooling or resonant generation of nano-mechanical vibrations for realistic experimental parameters.

  • LOFAR calibration and wide-field imaging
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Comptes Rendus Physique. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-1535 .- 1631-0705. ; 13:1, s. 28-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • LOFAR is a revolutionary instrument, operating at low frequencies (nu less than or similar to 240 MHz). It will drive major breakthroughs in the area of observational cosmology, but its use requires the development of challenging techniques and algorithms. Since its field of view and sensitivity are increased by orders of magnitude as compared to the older generation of instruments, new technical problems have to be addressed. The LOFAR survey team is in charge of commissioning the first LOFAR data produced in the imager mode as part of building the imaging pipeline. We are developing algorithms to tackle the problems associated with calibration (ionosphere, beam, etc.) and wide-field imaging for the achievement of the deep extragalactic surveys. New types of problems arise in that context, and notions such as algorithmic complexity and parallelism become fundamental.

  • The ALK(F1174L) mutation potentiates the oncogenic activity of MYCN in neuroblastoma
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Cancer Cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 1535-6108 .- 1878-3686. ; 22:1, s. 117-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ALK(F1174L) mutation is associated with intrinsic and acquired resistance to crizotinib and cosegregates with MYCN in neuroblastoma. In this study, we generated a mouse model overexpressing ALK(F1174L) in the neural crest. Compared to ALKF1174L and MYCN alone, co-expression of these two oncogenes led to the development of neuroblastomas with earlier onset, higher penetrance, and enhanced lethality. ALK(F1174L)/MYCN tumors exhibited increased MYCN dosage due to ALK(F1174L)-induced activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR and MAPK pathways, coupled with suppression of MYCN pro-apoptotic effects. Combined treatment with the ATP-competitive mTOR inhibitor Torin2 overcame the resistance of ALK(F1174L)/MYCN tumors to crizotinib. Our findings demonstrate a pathogenic role for ALK(F1174L) in neuroblastomas overexpressing MYCN and suggest a strategy for improving targeted therapy for ALK-positive neuroblastoma.

  • Cell of origin in AML: susceptibility to MN1-induced transformation is regulated by the MEIS1/AbdB-like HOX protein complex.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Cancer cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-3686 .- 1535-6108. ; 20:1, s. 39-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pathways defining susceptibility of normal cells to oncogenic transformation may be valuable therapeutic targets. We characterized the cell of origin and its critical pathways in MN1-induced leukemias. Common myeloid (CMP) but not granulocyte-macrophage progenitors (GMP) could be transformed by MN1. Complementation studies of CMP-signature genes in GMPs demonstrated that MN1-leukemogenicity required the MEIS1/AbdB-like HOX-protein complex. ChIP-sequencing identified common target genes of MN1 and MEIS1 and demonstrated identical binding sites for a large proportion of their chromatin targets. Transcriptional repression of MEIS1 targets in established MN1 leukemias demonstrated antileukemic activity. As MN1 relies on but cannot activate expression of MEIS1/AbdB-like HOX proteins, transcriptional activity of these genes determines cellular susceptibility to MN1-induced transformation and may represent a promising therapeutic target.

  • N-α-acetyltransferase 10 protein suppresses cancer cell metastasis by binding PIX proteins and inhibiting Cdc42/Rac1 activity
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Cancer Cell. - : Cell Press. - 1535-6108 .- 1878-3686. ; 19:2, s. 218-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • N-α-acetyltransferase 10 protein, Naa10p, is an N-acetyltransferase known to be involved in cell cycle control. We found that Naa10p was expressed lower in varieties of malignancies with lymph node metastasis compared with non-lymph node metastasis. Higher Naa10p expression correlates the survival of lung cancer patients. Naa10p significantly suppressed migration, tumor growth, and metastasis independent of its enzymatic activity. Instead, Naa10p binds to the GIT-binding domain of PIX, thereby preventing the formation of the GIT-PIX-Paxillin complex, resulting in reduced intrinsic Cdc42/Rac1 activity and decreased cell migration. Forced expression of PIX in Naa10-transfected tumor cells restored the migration and metastasis ability. We suggest that Naa10p functions as a tumor metastasis suppressor by disrupting the migratory complex, PIX-GIT- Paxillin, in cancer cells.

  • On invariants of quark and lepton mass matrices in the Standard Model
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Comptes Rendus. Physique. - : Elsevier BV. - 1631-0705. ; 13:2, s. 111-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I present the motivation for introducing the invariant functions of mass matrices, based on my own work, and give some examples. Since their introduction in 1985, in the framework of the Standard Electroweak Model, they have been used by many authors. Some authors have gone further along this path and have studied the extensions of this concept to frameworks beyond the Standard Model. (C) 2011 Academie des sciences.
