  • On the same path? Profiles of proximal socialization outcomes among new police officers
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 74:4, s. 301-324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Answering calls for an interactionist approach that would help clarify complex relationships among organizational socialization variables, this study applied a person-centered analytic approach aiming to examine the role of proximal socialization outcome profiles for distal outcomes. This approach is novel to organizational socialization research, contrasting the variable-centered approach dominating the field. Data from new police officers in Sweden (N = 430) were analyzed using latent profile analysis (LPA). Three proximal outcome profiles – a vulnerable (n = 151), a troublesome (n = 47), and a successful (n = 232) – were identified, with distinct patterns in the proximal outcome indicators role conflict, task mastery, and social integration. Complementary analysis showed subgroup differences in some antecedents and distal outcomes, which emphasized the role of personality and psychosocial working conditions. Thus, the findings show that proximal socialization outcome indicators may yield profiles characteristic of subgroups of newcomers who follow different socialization paths. Importantly, the findings show that a person-centered approach can add nuance to the understanding of how socialization processes differ among newcomers. While these results are promising, their generalizability to other professions and organizations remains to be investigated, which calls for continued person-centered research of organizational socialization processes.

  • Direct and sustained effects on leadership self-efficacy due to the inability to complete a parachute training course
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 72:3, s. 222-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study examined a parachute training course intended to improve the leadership abilities of future military officers. Two research questions were examined. First, whether there were any differences between completers and non-completers in anxiety, stress, and collective identity at the beginning of the course (time 1), and second, whether there were any differences between completers and non-completers in leadership self-efficacy immediately after the course and at a five-month follow-up (time 2 and time 3). Participants were cadets from the Swedish Military Academy undergoing the course as part of their officer training curriculum. The results showed no significant differences between completers and non-completers in anxiety, stress, and collective identity at the beginning of the course (time 1). Non-completers showed a significant reduction in leader self-control efficacy compared to those who completed the training immediately after the course and at a five-month follow-up (time 2 and 3). Overall, these results indicate that non-completion of this type of demanding training could have negative effects on the individual's leader self-control efficacy.

  • Descriptive social norms and resource cues influence choice by additive and separate effects
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 75:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Descriptive social norms have attracted much attention in social influence research. Regarding consumer choice, it is however unclear if, and to what extent, the influence of social norms is related to resource-state information. In two experiments, including 384 and 724 participants, respectively, we assess the unique and combined effects of these influences on both choice and preferences. Results showed consistent effects of descriptive social norms, influencing both choice and preferences across the two experiments. When a resource cue was provided in Experiment 1, a small non-significant difference compared to the control condition indicated that information about resource states might affect choice. This effect was replicated with statistical significance in Experiment 2. No effect of such a cue was detected on preferences in either experiment. Present results suggest that the effects of descriptive social norms and resource cues are independent and additive.

  • Relatives' lived experiences of losing a loved one to COVID-19 : an interpretative phenomenological analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the COVID-19 pandemic, restrictions to prevent its spread were formed, thereby hindering patients’ relatives from maintaining contact with and visiting their loved ones, even saying goodbye at the end of life. This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of bereaved relatives’ experiences of losing a loved one to COVID-19. Eight in-depth interviews were conducted and analysed using an interpretative phenomenological approach. The results revealed two superordinate themes: (a) the lonely and painful loss and (b) the double crises. The relatives were oscillating between hope and despair. During the time of their loved one’s illness, they felt powerless, excluded, lonely and vulnerable. The death was unexpected, and it was painful to not be able to say goodbye in person or when the life support was terminated. Furthermore, the relatives were in crisis at the same time as the health care system was in crisis. Sometimes the relatives did not receive information, and they felt like bystanders waiting for answers. The health care professionals’ attitudes were of importance in supporting the relatives. If there was a lack of empathy and understanding for the relative’s situation, feelings of frustration and not being respected emerged. To meet relatives’ needs when losing a loved one during circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare system needs to develop routines pertaining to providing adequate information, supporting relatives’ need to say goodbye, and coping with ethical dilemmas, such as when there are insufficient life support machines for patients.

  • Linking aberrant pauses during object naming to letter and word decoding speed in elderly with attention complaints
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 75:3, s. 213-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Attention deficit and reading difficulty are often comorbid in neuropsychiatric disorders of childhood and adolescence. Although recent research has shown how these two domains may interact in children, knowledge about such interaction in elderly is lacking. The present study tested whether this association is also present in healthy elderly with undiagnosed attention problems. Thirty-two subjects (65+ years) with life-long complaints of attention and with a Mini Mental (MMSE) cutoff of 27 points were tested with MapCog Spectra (MCS), with a word recognition test (Word Chains test) and CANTAB subtests of attention. All tests were presented on a tablet, except for the Word Chains test. The participants mean MMSE score was 29 points and their mean age was 71.5 years. Strong correlations were seen between the Word Chains test and the MCS, suggesting that a high number of aberrantly long pauses during serial naming was associated with fewer identifications of letters, words and sentences. The number of aberrant pauses was also associated with slower Reaction Time and a lower score on the Attention Shifting task of the CANTAB. The results were not associated with either gender or general intelligence. This study shows that attention is linked to decoding speed irrespective of intelligence and gender. We therefore suggest that a clinical assessment of attention deficit should also include an assessment of decoding ability, and vice versa, as these cognitive functions are strongly interdependent.

  • A patient perspective on non-attendance for psychotherapy in psychiatric outpatient care for patients with affective disorders
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 75:4, s. 313-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To explore the phenomenon of non-attendance for psychotherapy in psychiatric outpatient care for patients with affective disorders. Ten patients, seven women and three men, aged 25–51 years, agreed to participate in the study. The participants were recruited from a psychiatric outpatient clinic for patients with affective disorders at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sweden. A semi-structured interview guide was used during the interviews, which were audiotaped, transcribed and analyzed using content analysis. All informants expressed concern that they had been absent from booked appointments. The main reason given was that the mental illness that caused the need for treatment also caused the absence. They expressed ambiguity about the goals and method of treatment and showed ambivalence regarding the possibility of being helped and achieving change. The participants also highlighted shortcomings in communication with the psychologist regarding their non-attendance. Four themes were generated: A vicious circle, Processes without direction, Ambivalence and Inadequate communication. The study shows that missed appointments have a negative effect on the treatment process. If the patient and the psychologist jointly decide to start psychotherapy, it is thus important that the psychologist promptly addresses the problem of missed appointments and takes a professional responsibility for limiting the risk of another failed attempt at psychotherapy. In some cases, it is necessary to consider whether psychotherapy is an appropriate form of treatment or not. Practitioner points The study shows the importance of a careful assessment phase, where questions about motivation, goals and previous experiences of missed appointments are examined. The informants were not able to raise the issue of missed appointments in a larger perspective; their but focus was rather on the current symptom burden. It is therefore the responsibility of the psychologist to raise the issue and maintain a dialogue about goals, direction and evaluation of the psychotherapy. The psychologist bears a professional responsibility to limit the risk of another failed attempt to provide psychotherapy.

  • Thinking abstractly about one’s physical pain : can abstraction reduce sensitivity to painful stimuli?
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 76:1, s. 134-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whether people think less abstractly when they experience physical pain has been examined in previous research. However, the reverse causal possibility—that abstraction reduces sensitivity to painful stimuli—does not appear to have been empirically tested. The aim of this study was to investigate whether abstraction reduces sensitivity to painful stimuli. Using the cold pressor method, university students (N = 205) were exposed to experimental pain. Participants were randomly assigned to an abstract mindset, concrete mindset, cognitive distraction (control task), or no task (control) condition. As a manipulation of abstraction, participants focused on why they felt pain (abstract condition) versus how they felt pain (concrete condition). Pain endurance and pain intensity were evaluated. The abstract mindset condition did not show significantly lower pain sensitivity compared with the other experimental conditions. We found no evidence suggesting that abstract thinking would reduce pain sensitivity. The effectiveness of other techniques that induce abstraction, such as third-person (versus first-person) self-talk should be examined in future research. Since experimentally induced pain in healthy participants differs from clinical pain, whether abstract thinking may reduce pain sensitivity in chronic pain patients should also be examined.

  • Overspending on smartphone purchases among Swedish young adults
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 75:3, s. 257-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Nordic countries with growing markets for consumer credit, a concern is that consumption desires in conjunction with easily accessible credit make financially constrained young adults vulnerable to problem debt and over-indebtedness. In addressing this concern empirically, we investigate whether retail offers of instalment payments of discounted cash prices tempt young adults to finance purchases of more expensive premium smartphones than they would purchase by cash payment. Descriptions of smartphones ranging from budget to latest premium models are in an online experiment presented to 152 Swedish young adults between 18 and 25 years. We employ a within-group design requiring the participants in counterbalanced order to choose a preferred smartphone twice, either if the default choice is paying the regular cash price or two-year monthly instalments with a 20% discount on the cash price. Although a majority chose the same smartphone twice seemingly not influenced by the retail offer, this was not the case for about one third of the young adults who despite a negative attitude to borrowing choose instalment payments of more expensive premium smartphones, and more than half of them at a price exceeding the regular cash price they choose to pay for a cheaper smartphone. Instalment payments as well as rental contracts are penetrating many consumer markets in which young adults are large segments. These new forms of accessible credit should be particularly attractive to those who are financially constrained with potentially negative consequences for their solvency. Our results suggest that regulation policies may need to be considered.

  • How social networks influence young men to seek psychological help
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 73:2, s. 153-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing body of literature that recognizes young men’s reluctance to seek psychological help. However, how young men perceive the role of their social networks in their decision to seek help has received limited attention in research. Using thematic analysis, this study investigated 30 young men’s description of how members from three categories of their social networks: partner, family and friends have influenced them to seek psychological help and how they have experienced this influence. The results show that certain themes recur between various members of men's social networks while others were unique to roles in the social network. How this information can be used to make it easier for young men to seek psychological help is discussed. © 2020 The Editors of Nordic Psychology.

  • An interpretative phenomenological analysis of the lived experiences of older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 75, s. 3-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic led many countries to impose restrictions on the movement and behaviour of their populations. Swedish authorities took another route, largely adopting voluntary disease control, with particularly strict recommendations targeting people over the age of 70. The present study sought to explore the lived experiences of eight older adults (four men and four women) aged 71-82 in Sweden, of living during a pandemic using diaries across a 14-day period followed by interviews. From an interpretative phenomenological analysis, three themes emerged: (a) a life on hold (b), caring for body and soul, and (c) putting things into perspective. The results revealed that the participants adapted to the circumstances and adhered to the recommendations. They cared for their physical and psychological health by engaging in physical activities, structuring their days, and by finding adaptive ways to engage with family and friends. Nostalgia for pre-pandemic time seemed to bring meaning to their present situation, and participants identified with being privileged in their living situation. The study highlights protective factors throughout the pandemic. However, more studies need to be made to understand the experiences of the pandemic of more vulnerable groups of older adults.
