  • Hankering for iconic moments : Transduction and representation in Skam fans' anticipations about the remake Skam Austin
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - : Intellect Ltd.. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 11:1, s. 133-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Norwegian web series Skam (2015-17) has been remade several times, but the American version Skam Austin (2018-19) has a particular standing as an adaptation because its first season was produced by the original showrunner. The article considers fans' views of the choices made in the remake and the contextual shifts informing these choices, i.e. their views of the so-called cultural transduction. It argues that the fan discourse around Skam Austin thrives on discussing the transduction in itself, because long-standing fans dominate the discourse and because the show's depictions of teenage life-worlds are expected to have high realistic ambitions. Comments from fans reveal that much of their enjoyment of Skam Austin resided in expectations about specific 'remade moments'. Such moments typically express a spirit of social resistance and are, if successful, celebrated as iconic. In the politicized American media climate of the day, 'remade moments' that particularly engaged fans focused on representation issues concerning gender and race, such as intersectional identities and awareness about sexual harassment.

  • Understanding Gardar Sahlberg with neural nets : On algorithmic reuse of the Swedish SF archive
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - : Intellect Ltd.. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 12:3, s. 225-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we re-trace the history of the Swedish SF archive and reflect on how this collection of historic newsreels has been reappropriated and remixed through-out more recent media history. In particular, we focus on the work of director and film historian Gardar Sahlberg, who made extensive use of the SF archive, first in a series of documentary films, then in a number of historical TV programmes. We are interested in how historic film footage travels and circulates through time, but foremost we explore how algorithms can help identify instances of audio-visual reuse in large datasets. Hence the article discusses algorithmic ways of examining archival film reuse, introducing a method for mapping video reuse with the help of artificial intelligence or more precisely machine learning that uses so-called convo-lutional neural nets. The article presents the Video Reuse Detector (VRD), a tool that uses machine learning to identify visual similarities within a given audiovisual database such as the SF archive.

  • Art cinema, film policy and the slaughterhouse of Swedish cinema
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 13:3, s. 219-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Focusing on the introduction of a new government film policy in 2017, this article explores how the audience for Swedish cinema – little-watched art films in particular – is conceptualized in the context of film policy and as a topic of debate within the Swedish film industry. The analysis shows that the new film policy contributes – against its own explicit aims – to reproducing a deep-seated distinction between ‘wide’ and ‘narrow’ films. In addition, Swedish film policy has yet to adapt to the conditions of today’s digital screen culture. As a result, ‘narrow films’ are subject to low audience expectations and a de facto lack of performance accountability. This, the article argues, could be more a blessing than a curse, suggesting a need to rethink the notion of ‘failure’ and to further explore the prospects of ‘failure studies’ in the context of Swedish cinema.

  • Special Issue: ‘Contemporary Scandinavian Art Cinema and Screen Cultures in Transition’
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 13:3, s. 215-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The editorial outlines our main reasons for bringing scholarly attention to the theme of Scandinavian art cinema and screen cultures in transition at this moment. It provides brief summaries of the issue’s five feature articles and presents some suggestions for further research on the topic. We stress the importance of taking gender into account in future studies and call for a closer dialogue and more mutual engagement between scholars of art cinema and scholars of digital media.

  • Challenging time, age and power relations : The child figure in Ingmar Bergman’s Autumn Sonata
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is an interdisciplinary study of the figure of the child in Ingmar Bergman’s Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata) (1978), using theoretical perspectives from childhood studies within a cinema studies framing. By analysing the shifting roles of mother and daughter in this seldom-discussed film, the article demonstrates the on-screen child figure’s capacity to challenge society’s deep-rooted ideas of ‘child’ and ‘adult’, respectively, thereby exposing the inconstant nature of age categories. Drawing on contemporary childhood studies, I argue, using Autumn Sonata as an example, that the child figure in cinema bears a subversive potential for questioning power relations between generations as well as defying a chrononormative notion of time and age. This reading contributes to a deepened awareness of the function of the on-screen child figure, not least transferable to Bergman’s cinematic work. It also sheds light on the mutable connections between fictional children and central conceptions of childhood in contemporary society.

  • Women’s agency in the Swedish film industry : Annoying little buggers and passionate team players
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - : Intellect Ltd.. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 12:2, s. 201-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article is based on transcripts of interviews with twenty women directors in the Swedish film industry conducted in 2018 and 2019, focusing on narratives from women working under varying conditions and in several genres who have actively chosen various strategies to manage their work situation. We contextualize their actions and choices to unpack how their work and efforts fit into an industry still dominated by men and influenced by a culture of masculinity idealizing the male genius. In the first section, we discuss how the women experienced their first encounters with the industry and what strategies they developed at this stage. In the second section, we discuss women’s deliberations about how to make work on the set manageable and productive. In the final section, we investigate various strategies related to work opportunities and the possibilities for women to realize their visions and their passion for making films.

  • 'Battleship Femininity' deconstructed : Unmasking the myth of Eva Dahlbeck and Ingmar Bergman
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - : Intellect. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 11:2, s. 217-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  The Swedish film star Eva Dahlbeck (1920‐2008) is now remembered mainly for her contributions to Ingmar Bergman’s comedies in the 1950s. The epithet ‘Pansarskeppet kvinnligheten’ (‘Battleship Femininity’), allegedly given to her by the director, has integrated her stardom into the myth-making process driven by Bergman and the press. This can erroneously give him sole credit for Dahlbeck’s fame despite her already established star status. To reconsider such an auteurist misconception, this article examines Dahlbeck’s stardom from 1946 to 1956, drawing on Richard Dyer’s seminal theorization of a film star as a media construction. By analysing Dahlbeck’s star image and its relationship to three characters she plays in Bergman’s films, the article situates these films in the dynamics formed by diverse media texts and elucidates their historical and cultural context while also providing a case study of film stardom in post-war Sweden.

  • Involuntary Dogme restrictions : Orca and COVID-19 screen culture
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - : Intellect. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 11:2, s. 207-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish film Orca (2020) was both conceived and produced during COVID-19. As such, it is also about the pandemic and its own becoming. Making use of the proliferation of current screen cultures, including the split screen, writer and director Josephine Bornebusch invigorates old-fashioned ensemble acting while also putting current mediality on display.
