  • Building bridges or negotiating tensions? : experiences from a project aimed at enabling migrant access to health and social care in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Diversity in Health and Care. - 1759-1422 .- 1743-4904. ; 6:2, s. 85-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A current challenge for many European countries is to enable forced migrants to access health and social care that meets their needs. One solution is to use paraprofessionals - that is, trained individuals who are not professionals - to act as bridge-builders between minority communities and the health and social care sectors. This paper explores the development of a quality improvement project in Sweden. The project aimed to recruit and train forced migrants who had lived in Sweden for more than five years to act as bridge-builders. The aim was to use their unique experiences and knowledge in two ways - to work with service staff in developing new ways of working, and to become culturally competent paraprofessionals working with their own communities. This paper focuses on how an understanding of the role evolved as the participants reflected on their experiences and undertook an inquiry process culminating in the development of three possible models of what the task of a bridge-builder should be in developing culturally appropriate health and social services that are responsive to the needs of forced migrants. The conclusion reflects on what was learned and how the experiences from this project may be useful for others who are struggling with the same kind of problem in Sweden and in other countries.

  • Streamlining life cycle inventory data generation in agriculture using traceability data and information and communication technologies - Part II: Application to viticulture
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 87:1, s. 119-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agricultural systems are increasingly subjected to environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) but generating life cycle inventory (LCI) data in agriculture remains a challenge. In Part I, it was suggested that traceability data are a good basis for generating precise LCI with reduced effort, especially when collected by efficient information and communication technologies (ICTs). The aim of this paper is to demonstrate this for wine grape production and generate a list of data to be collected for streamlined LCI generation. The study is carried out in the South of France, on a viticultural farm implementing electronic traceability of each cultivation operation, i.e. tillage, fertilisation, crop protection, weeding, canopy management and harvesting (no irrigation is needed at this vineyard). For each operation, specific emission models which satisfy the trade-off between accuracy and need for data have been identified. Traceability data must be supplemented with data related to the plot, equipment and inputs to feed the models. The sensitivity of the LCA outputs to plot soil type and year of cultivation was studied. Consistent with previous agricultural studies, the results show that operations such as pesticide spraying and fertilising have large environmental impacts in this Mediterranean vineyard. Notable variations occur in life cycle impact assessment indicators, principally due to variations in crop yield; however, the influence of secondary factors such as soil type and agricultural practices is also evident and this contribution allows us to better characterise the variability of grape production and to show that streamlined LCI can be created using traceability data. Ultimately, this paper delivers two results. It provides simple models, and relevant data and methodology to enable viticultural LCAs to be undertaken. Additionally, it demonstrates that accurate LCIs can be built based on data already collected for traceability when supplemented with other easily collectable data (weather and farm structural data). Overall, this work paves the way for streamlined LCI in agriculture.

  • Introduction : STS and Disability
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Science, Technology and Human Values. - Thousand Oaks, USA : Sage Publications. - 0162-2439 .- 1552-8251. ; 39:1, s. 98-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What is the conventional sense of disability, and how do the questions addressed in this special issue of Science, Technology, & Human Values (STHV) differ from those inspired by Donna Haraway and the cyborg? In industrialized societies, the medical profession has authority over the determination of who should count as disabled while assistive technologies enable specific kinds of subject positions (in terms of personhood and competencies as well as limits). In this special issue of STHV, the focus of the essays as a whole is on the different enactments of disability, as complexity that simultaneously implicates bodies, gender, sexuality, technology, and politics. The study of disability offers scope for refinement and further articulation of many issues of long-standing concern to science, technology, and society (STS). In addition, we hope they will encourage further reflection on our field's normative engagement.

  • Optimal Transmit Strategies for Gaussian MISO Wiretap Channels
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 1556-6013 .- 1556-6021. ; 15, s. 829-838
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the optimal tradeoff between secrecy and non-secrecy rates of the MISO wiretap channels for different power constraint settings: sum power constraint only, per-antenna power constraints only, and joint sum and per-antenna power constraints. The problem is motivated by the fact that channel capacity and secrecy capacity are generally achieved by different transmit strategies. First, a necessary and sufficient condition to ensure a positive secrecy capacity is shown. The optimal tradeoff between secrecy rate and transmission rate is characterized by a weighted rate sum maximization problem. Since this problem is not necessarily convex, equivalent problem formulations are introduced to derive the optimal transmit strategies. Under sum power constraint only, a closed-form solution is provided. Under per-antenna power constraints, necessary conditions to find the optimal power allocation are derived. Sufficient conditions are provided for the special case of two transmit antennas. For the special case of aligned channels, the optimal transmit strategies can deduced from an equivalent point-to-point channel problem. Last, the theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulations.

  • HRG regulates tumor progression, epithelial to mesenchymal transition and metastasis via platelet-induced signaling in the pre-tumorigenic microenvironment
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Angiogenesis. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0969-6970 .- 1573-7209. ; 16:4, s. 889-902
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mice lacking histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG) display an accelerated angiogenic switch and larger tumors-a phenotype caused by enhanced platelet activation in the HRG-deficient mice. Here we show that platelets induce molecular changes in the pre-tumorigenic environment in HRG-deficient mice, promoting cell survival, angiogenesis and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and that these effects involved signaling via TBK1, Akt2 and PDGFR beta. These early events subsequently translate into an enhanced rate of spontaneous metastasis to distant organs in mice lacking HRG. Later in tumor development characteristic features of pathological angiogenesis, such as decreased perfusion and pericyte coverage, are more pronounced in HRG-deficient mice. At this stage, platelets are essential to support the larger tumor volumes formed in mice lacking HRG by keeping their tumor vasculature sufficiently functional. We conclude that HRG-deficiency promotes tumor progression via enhanced platelet activity and that platelets play a dual role in this process. During early stages of transformation, activated platelets promote tumor cell survival, the angiogenic switch and invasiveness. In the more progressed tumor, platelets support the enhanced pathological angiogenesis and hence increased tumor growth seen in the absence of HRG. Altogether, our findings strengthen the notion of HRG as a potent tumor suppressor, with capacity to attenuate the angiogenic switch, tumor growth, EMT and subsequent metastatic spread, by regulating platelet activity.

  • Learning to Be Affected : Masculinities, Music and Social Embodiment
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Sociological Research Online. - Guildford : Department of Sociology, University of Surrey. - 1360-7804. ; 19:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Connell's concept of hegemonic masculinity remains a pervasive influence in critical studies on men and masculinities (CSMM). However as Connell and Messerschmidt note, one of the key drawbacks of the approach is that it lacks an adequate theory of 'social embodiment'. Subsequent authors have explored how masculinities entail bodily control and regulation but this often reproduces the Cartesian divide between mind and body that CSMM is highly critical of. On the other hand, poststructuralist critiques often see the body as entirely constructed through discourse, undermining the problem of gendered, embodied experience. This article suggests that literature on affect is a means of moving between these two approaches in order to see masculinities as corporeally experienced through power relations, but ultimately not entirely reducible to them. Drawing on 6 life history case studies from a larger research project, the article demonstrates how 'learning to be affected' by music is an embodied process which relies fundamentally on learning physiological experience through social interaction. This highlights the potential for both re-producing and transforming gendered performances and offers a new theoretical framework for conceptualising masculinities in the field of CSMM.
