  • Digital Platform Grafting: Strategies for Entering Established Ecosystems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - 2162-8564 .- 0008-1256. ; 66:3, s. 27-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital platforms are often characterized as enablers of new ecosystems. However, platforms are sometimes introduced into pre-existing ecosystems, where a platform’s ability to harmonize with the ecosystem is critical for its success. This article draws on the case of digital healthcare platforms and introduces the concept of platform grafting, which denotes the process of integrating a new platform into a pre-existing ecosystem, leading to a coevolutionary process of adapting both the platform and the surrounding ecosystem. Dynamic capabilities are critical for successfully integrating the platform into the ecosystem, and this article provides a capabilities framework for understanding platform grafting.

  • Strategies for Digitalization in Manufacturing Firms
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 2162-8564 .- 0008-1256. ; 62:4, s. 17-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the digitalization efforts of 26 leading manufacturing firms, the difficulties encountered, and how they can be handled. It shows that many firms are far from ready to benefit from digitalization and are mainly focused on achieving greater efficiency through digitalization rather than pursuing a growth agenda. This imbalance is because of the difficulties related to identifying profitable configurations of competencies, assets, and data generated from digital technologies, orchestrating them, and exploiting them in an agile organization. Practical implications of digitalization are highlighted, specifically in terms of strategies for supporting the current business and embracing long-term digital transformation.

  • The Forces of Ecosystem Evolution
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 2162-8564 .- 0008-1256. ; 64:3, s. 5-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ecosystems are the result of a delicate balance between centripetal forces that push economic activities toward integration, and centrifugal forces that pull economic activities out onto the market. Ecosystems evolve when these forces change. For example, technological complementarities-the main source of centripetal force-are dynamic and may be commoditized, generalized, or standardized over time. Management and coordination also change: for example, open innovation practices enable firms to move innovation activities from the in-house R&D lab out into the ecosystem. This article discusses how such dynamics in technologies and management lead to ecosystem evolution.

  • Blurring the Lines between Physical and Digital Spaces: Business Model Innovation in Retailing
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0008-1256 .- 2162-8564.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional retail practices are under stress as retailers ponder various ways of setting up a sustainable omnichannel business model. A significant challenge in their endeavor relates to the blurring lines between physical and digital worlds. This article analyzes three retailers’ exploratory efforts of alternative physical retail spaces. There are five key innovation areas to revamp for such a retail store: in-store technology, the role of sales associates, leveraging a mobile channel, data analytics, and collaborations. Moreover, physical retail space can serve as an aggregation hub that connects various retailer-customer interaction points across physical and digital spaces.

  • Digital Artifacts in Industrial Co-creation : How to Use VR Technology to Bridge the Provider-Customer Boundary
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0008-1256 .- 2162-8564. ; 64:4, s. 125-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial co-creation projects are often complex and ambiguous, involving high levels of interpretive uncertainty over processes and outcomes. To boost the effectiveness of such projects, firms have increasingly adopted virtual reality (VR) technology and have experienced unique benefits by utilizing digital artifacts-interactive objects in digital environments, such as factory installation layouts or design visualizations. This article provides case evidence demonstrating how VR-enabled digital artifacts support firms to effectively implement tailor-made solutions in robotics and automation projects. The adoption of new digital co-creation practices redefines the traditional customer-provider roles in industrial co-creation, increasing engagement, reducing uncertainty, and improving project outcomes.

  • Creating and Capturing Value from Open Innovation: Humans, Firms, Platforms, and Ecosystems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 2162-8564 .- 0008-1256. ; 65:2, s. 5-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open innovation rests on the idea that not all the smart people work only for you, and managing human interaction across organizational boundaries is therefore central to open innovation. This article starts with outlining and reviewing research on this human dimension of open innovation. The article develops seven principles of innovation-producing encounters that can guide managers in enabling value creation through open innovation. We continue by introducing the rest of the special section, which expands beyond the human dimension to also include firms, platforms, and ecosystems, with important implications for the creation and capture of value from open innovation.

  • Tackling Societal Challenges with Open Innovation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 2162-8564 .- 0008-1256. ; 63:2, s. 49-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open innovation includes external knowledge sources and paths to market as complements to internal innovation processes. Open innovation has to date been driven largely by business objectives, but the imperative of social challenges has turned attention to the broader set of goals to which open innovation is relevant. In this paper, we discuss how open innovation can be deployed to address societal challenges-as well as the tradeoffs and tensions that arise as a result. Against this background we introduce the papers published in this Special Section, which were originally presented at the sixth annual World Open Innovation Conference.

  • Tools and Technologies of Transparency in Sustainable Global Supply Chains
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0008-1256 .- 2162-8564. ; 64:1, s. 67-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the role that technology plays in creating and fostering transparency in global supply chains. Transparency is deemed vital in the creation of sustainable and resilient supply chains and overall effective corporate governance. There are two distinct orientations toward the use of technology by multinational corporations (MNCs) in creating sustainability transparency within their global supply chains: control and relational. A control orientation views technology as a tool to gather the ever-increasing levels of sustainability data on supplier practices in an efficient, secure, and progressively automated manner. A relational orientation adopts a view where technology is a tool to help build social relations and improve dialogue and collaboration on sustainability throughout the supply chain. A key difference in the two orientations lies in the mindset of the MNC manager toward the development of supply chain sustainability transparency. The article illustrates the effective application of both approaches and offers advice to managers on the design choices they need to consider in choosing technologies.

  • The metaverse flywheel : creating value across physical and virtual worlds
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: California Management Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0008-1256 .- 2162-8564.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents a metaverse flywheel model providing insights into how the emerging layered modular architecture of the metaverse can enable new types of value-creation opportunities for organizations. Based on interviews with early metaverse adopters and innovators, this article identifies three key metaverse affordances: prospection of future conditions, persistence of editable and evolving virtual spaces, and integration between virtual and physical worlds. The findings enhance the nascent metaverse literature by highlighting that new organizing logics are required for metaverse-specific value creation, which goes beyond the previous generation’s isolated 3D models and other interfaces.
