  • Multiscale Understanding of Covalently Fixed Sulfur–Polyacrylonitrile Composite as Advanced Cathode for Metal–Sulfur Batteries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : Wiley. - 2198-3844 .- 2198-3844. ; 8:21
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metal–sulfur batteries (MSBs) provide high specific capacity due to the reversible redox mechanism based on conversion reaction that makes this battery a more promising candidate for next-generation energy storage systems. Recently, along with elemental sulfur (S8), sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN), in which active sulfur moieties are covalently bounded to carbon backbone, has received significant attention as an electrode material. Importantly, SPAN can serve as a universal cathode with minimized metal–polysulfide dissolution because sulfur is immobilized through covalent bonding at the carbon backbone. Considering these unique structural features, SPAN represents a new approach beyond elemental S8 for MSBs. However, the development of SPAN electrodes is in its infancy stage compared to conventional S8 cathodes because several issues such as chemical structure, attached sulfur chain lengths, and over-capacity in the first cycle remain unresolved. In addition, physical, chemical, or specific treatments are required for tuning intrinsic properties such as sulfur loading, porosity, and conductivity, which have a pivotal role in improving battery performance. This review discusses the fundamental and technological discussions on SPAN synthesis, physicochemical properties, and electrochemical performance in MSBs. Further, the essential guidance will provide research directions on SPAN electrodes for potential and industrial applications of MSBs.

  • Combined Metabolic Activators Accelerates Recovery in Mild-to-Moderate COVID-19
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : Wiley. - 2198-3844. ; 8:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • COVID-19 is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic abnormalities, including the deficiencies in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and glutathione metabolism. Here it is investigated if administration of a mixture of combined metabolic activators (CMAs) consisting of glutathione and NAD+ precursors can restore metabolic function and thus aid the recovery of COVID-19 patients. CMAs include l-serine, N-acetyl-l-cysteine, nicotinamide riboside, and l-carnitine tartrate, salt form of l-carnitine. Placebo-controlled, open-label phase 2 study and double-blinded phase 3 clinical trials are conducted to investigate the time of symptom-free recovery on ambulatory patients using CMAs. The results of both studies show that the time to complete recovery is significantly shorter in the CMA group (6.6 vs 9.3 d) in phase 2 and (5.7 vs 9.2 d) in phase 3 trials compared to placebo group. A comprehensive analysis of the plasma metabolome and proteome reveals major metabolic changes. Plasma levels of proteins and metabolites associated with inflammation and antioxidant metabolism are significantly improved in patients treated with CMAs as compared to placebo. The results show that treating patients infected with COVID-19 with CMAs lead to a more rapid symptom-free recovery, suggesting a role for such a therapeutic regime in the treatment of infections leading to respiratory problems.

  • Nuclear AIM2-Like Receptors Drive Genotoxic Tissue Injury by Inhibiting DNA Repair
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : Wiley. - 2198-3844. ; 8:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radiation is an essential preparative procedure for bone marrow (BM) transplantation and cancer treatment. The therapeutic efficacy of radiation and associated toxicity varies from patient to patient, making it difficult to prescribe an optimal patient-specific irradiation dose. The molecular determinants of radiation response remain unclear. AIM2-like receptors (ALRs) are key players in innate immunity and determine the course of infections, inflammatory diseases, senescence, and cancer. Here it is reported that mice lacking ALRs are resistant to irradiation-induced BM injury. It is shown that nuclear ALRs are inhibitors of DNA repair, thereby accelerate genome destabilization, micronuclei generation, and cell death, and that this novel function is uncoupled from their role in innate immunity. Mechanistically, ALRs bind to and interfere with chromatin decompaction vital for DNA repair. The finding uncovers ALRs as targets for new interventions against genotoxic tissue injury and as possible biomarkers for predicting the outcome of radio/chemotherapy.

  • Insight into the Critical Role of Exchange Current Density on Electrodeposition Behavior of Lithium Metal
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : Wiley. - 2198-3844 .- 2198-3844. ; 8:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to an ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh g−1, lithium (Li) is regarded as the ultimate anode for high-energy-density batteries. However, the practical application of Li metal anode is hindered by safety concerns and low Coulombic efficiency both of which are resulted fromunavoidable dendrite growth during electrodeposition. This study focuses on a critical parameter for electrodeposition, the exchange current density, which has attracted only little attention in research on Li metal batteries. A phase-field model is presented to show the effect of exchange current density on electrodeposition behavior of Li. The results show that a uniform distribution of cathodic current density, hence uniform electrodeposition, on electrode is obtained with lower exchange current density. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that lower exchange current density contributes to form a larger critical radius of nucleation in the initial electrocrystallization that results in a dense deposition of Li, which is a foundation for improved Coulombic efficiency and dendrite-free morphology. The findings not only pave the way to practical rechargeable Li metal batteries but can also be translated to the design of stable metal anodes, e.g., for sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) batteries.

  • Electron-Phonon Coupling and Electron-Phonon Scattering in SrVO3
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2198-3844. ; 8:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the physics of strongly correlated electronic systems has been a central issue in condensed matter physics for decades. In transition metal oxides, strong correlations characteristic of narrow d bands are at the origin of remarkable properties such as the opening of Mott gap, enhanced effective mass, and anomalous vibronic coupling, to mention a few. SrVO3 with V4+ in a 3d(1) electronic configuration is the simplest example of a 3D correlated metallic electronic system. Here, the authors' focus on the observation of a (roughly) quadratic temperature dependence of the inverse electron mobility of this seemingly simple system, which is an intriguing property shared by other metallic oxides. The systematic analysis of electronic transport in SrVO3 thin films discloses the limitations of the simplest picture of e-e correlations in a Fermi liquid (FL); instead, it is shown show that the quasi-2D topology of the Fermi surface (FS) and a strong electron-phonon coupling, contributing to dress carriers with a phonon cloud, play a pivotal role on the reported electron spectroscopic, optical, thermodynamic, and transport data. The picture that emerges is not restricted to SrVO3 but can be shared with other 3d and 4d metallic oxides.

  • High Performance, Fully Bio‐Based, and Optically Transparent Wood Biocomposites
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : Wiley. - 2198-3844.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sustainable development of engineering biocomposites has been limited due to a lack of bio‐based monomers combining favorable processing with high performance. Here, the authors report a novel and fully bio‐based transparent wood biocomposite based on green synthesis of a new limonene acrylate monomer from renewable resources. The monomer is impregnated and readily polymerized in a delignified, succinylated wood substrate to form optically transparent biocomposites. The chemical structure of the limonene acrylate enables diffusion into the cell wall, and the polymer phase is both refractive index‐matched and covalently linked to the wood substrate. This results in nanostructured biocomposites combining an excellent optical transmittance of 90% at 1.2 mm thickness and a remarkably low haze of 30%, with a high mechanical performance (strength 174 MPa, Young's modulus 17 GPa). Bio‐based transparent wood holds great potential towards the development of sustainable wood nanotechnologies for structural applications, where transparency and mechanical performance are combined.

  • 3D Adipose Tissue Culture Links the Organotypic Microenvironment to Improved Adipogenesis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : Wiley. - 2198-3844. ; 8:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Obesity and type 2 diabetes are strongly associated with adipose tissue dysfunction and impaired adipogenesis. Understanding the molecular underpinnings that control adipogenesis is thus of fundamental importance for the development of novel therapeutics against metabolic disorders. However, translational approaches are hampered as current models do not accurately recapitulate adipogenesis. Here, a scaffold-free versatile 3D adipocyte culture platform with chemically defined conditions is presented in which primary human preadipocytes accurately recapitulate adipogenesis. Following differentiation, multi-omics profiling and functional tests demonstrate that 3D adipocyte cultures feature mature molecular and cellular phenotypes similar to freshly isolated mature adipocytes. Spheroids exhibit physiologically relevant gene expression signatures with 4704 differentially expressed genes compared to conventional 2D cultures (false discovery rate < 0.05), including the concerted expression of factors shaping the adipogenic niche. Furthermore, lipid profiles of >1000 lipid species closely resemble patterns of the corresponding isogenic mature adipocytes in vivo (R2 = 0.97). Integration of multi-omics signatures with analyses of the activity profiles of 503 transcription factors using global promoter motif inference reveals a complex signaling network, involving YAP, Hedgehog, and TGFβ signaling, that links the organotypic microenvironment in 3D culture to the activation and reinforcement of PPARγ and CEBP activity resulting in improved adipogenesis.
