    • Maternal mental health spans in a temporary manner from pre-conception through the phases of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period (i.e., perinatal). The psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) field has made important contributions to the knowledge of the pathophysiology of poor perinatal mental health, but the PNI lens could be used more broadly to inform clinical practice. This review argues that PNI holds the key to several important aspects of variations in mental health for pregnant and postpartum women. This review describes existing knowledge from studies on immune activation in maternal depression during pregnancy and postpartum, and other important features such as stress reactivity, the microbiome, and its metabolites. The importance of objective measures for screening and prediction is discussed as well as the need for novel therapeutics to treat poor mental health in the perinatal period. The PNI framework could thus be further applied to inform research about the mechanisms of perinatal psychiatric morbidity, which could pave the way for future precision medicine for perinatal mental health issues.

    • What do we know about sickness behavior? In this article, I guide you through some of the complexity of sickness behavior occurring after an immune challenge. I highlight the many features of behavioral and affective changes induced during experimental endotoxemia in humans, and describe how little we know about many of these features. I argue that we need to dismantle the components of inflammation-induced sickness behavior, and study each component in detail. I also point out the large inter-individual differences in inflammation-induced behavioral and affective changes, and the fact that psychosocial factors likely interact with inflammation to shape inflammation-induced sickness behavior. PNI clearly lacks investigations of the vulnerability and resilient factors underlying the inter-individual variability in sickness behavior. Throughout the article, I base my argument on my published articles, and provide concrete examples from my experience and the data that I have collected over the past 10 years. Given the relevance of inflammation-induced sickness behavior for inflammation-associated depression and for how people react to infections, I encourage current and future psychoneuroimmunologists to return towards basic science of sickness behavior.

  • Immunological effects of cerebral palsy and rehabilitation exercises in children

    • Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of motor disorders caused by non-progressive lesions of the premature brain with lifelong pathophysiological consequences that include dysregulation of innate immunity. Persistent inflammation with increased levels of circulating pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) is negatively associated with rehabilitation outcome in children with CP. Because of the crosstalk between innate and adaptive immunity, we investigated the effect of CP and rehabilitation exercises on the adaptive immune system in children with CP by measuring the levels of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ Т-cells, and CD22+ B-cells and the levels of immunoglobulins. Children with CP had higher levels of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ Т-cells, and CD22+ B-cells compared to healthy children, and the rehabilitation exercise programs produced better outcomes in terms of increased gains in motor function at an earlier age. Rehabilitation exercises performed over a month resulted in significantly decreased levels of IgA in serum and reduced numbers of B-lymphocytes and reduced IgM levels. Our study suggests that rehabilitation programs with a focus on neuroplasticity and physical exercises in children with CP can reduce both cellular and humoral immune responses.
