  • Researchers and Practitioners Learn Together in a Process of Joint Knowledge Creation

    • In 1997 a new university law imposed Swedish universities a third mission. In addition to research and teaching, universities now have to “collaborate with the surrounding society”.This new law was quite indistinct which raises questions about how, how much and in what way the co-operation between university and society should be performed. What obstacles and possibilities are there for real deep cooperation between such different cultures as the academic sector, the commercial private sector and the political public sector? In our paper we reflect upon the collaboration between research and practice from two different processes where we have been involved as action researchers. Both these processes were aimed to bridge the gap between the academic world and the industry and public sector. We reflect upon our role as researchers in relation to the role of the practitioners. What were our different incentives and expectations when entering a joint learning process? What did we learn and what different knowledge was there to serve our different needs? We discuss the two cases by highlighting the research methods, where researchers and practitioners in joint action take part in development processes, and how these processes both contribute theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge to as well academy as working life. But we also discuss the difficulties in handling the role as action researcher and the problems faced when people from different cultures and with different expectations act together.

  • Work integrated learning as praxis

    • In Sweden there has been a debate during the past decade about the efficiency of higher education in relation to its´ applicability in work life. There is also a debate about the uneven recruitment as regards class and ethnicity. During the past decades the number of students in Swedish higher education has increased enormously. The author of the paper has the assignment to investigate whether Work integrated learning (WIL) would be a way to narrow education and work life to each other. As the project has not yet started focus in this paper is on the basic assumptions and values of WIL and on some critical points on the matter. The point is to elaborate a form at the organisational level and at the work place where the two partners are cooperating and generating knowledge that can be maintained and developed in the academy as well as in work life. It might be done by mutually developing knowledge that may be regarded as a synthesis of, and distinct from, what generally are named as scientific and practical knowledge. The author claims that this kind of learning and knowledge formation to a certain extent resembles of the Aristotelian concept of praxis.

  • 'Diffusion of innovations in an educational setting : an analysis of a school improvement project in Sweden 2006-2007
  • 2007

    • Upper secondary education in Sweden involves around 98 percent of 16-18 year old adolescents. Among these 55 percent attend vocational training programs. To meet changing demands on the labour market caused by technological development and structural reorientation, the educational system has to adjust to these new circumstances by reorientation in education methods, action target (i.e. learning in working settings) which will eventually improve the quality in education and the pupils/students employability. This reorientation concerns particularly vocational-oriented schools. To improve the quality of upper secondary vocational education, the Swedish National Agency for School Improvement started a two year project in 2006 with the aim of encouraging upper secondary schools to form networks with other schools and through these spread and share experiences and ideas about school improvement, working methods and organisation. Behind the project there was a vision encouraging other school organisations to learn how to improve quality in education by the experiences of previously successful local projects. Empirical data have been collected through interviews with some of the schools in the project and a questionnaire has been handed out to all of the schools. Data also include newsletters and minutes (covering meetings) received from the networks as well as documents concerning how and why these ideas originally was formulated by the Swedish National Agency for School Improvement. The aim of the paper is to analyse the process of diffusion of knowledge about school improvement in these networks.
