  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For centuries livestock have formed the backbone of the Somali economy. Camels are especially highly valued by Somali herdsmen. The practical uses of the camel have been eloquently described by Somalis in their extensive oral poetry, handed down through generations from father to son. It forms a complete literacy tradition composed of poems, proverbs, metaphors and tales of wisdom. The collection and preservation of Somali oral literature are important subjects that require urgent attention. This rich literature was transmitted to us orally from generation to generation. The cultural and historical life of the Somali people is reflected in this ancient oral data. The present collection of oral literature on the Somali camel is the result of an extensive research work. Oral literature has been one of the subjects studied by the "Somali camel research project", a bilateral undertaking between Somalia and Sweden (the Somali Academy of Sciences and Arts, SOMAC, and the Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation with Developing Countries, SAREC).

  • Industry goes farming : the Nigerian raw material crisis and the case of textiles and cotton
  • 1987
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a study of the textile industry, how it was hit by crisis, and its involvement in the production and marketing of cotton, its main raw material. When "Industry Goes Farming" it signals a new phase in third world industrialisation, with far-reaching consequences for agriculture. Can peasants solve the problems of industry or must agriculture itself be industrialised? The study examines both the industrial end of the raw material crisis and industry's strategies for subordinating or replacing the peasantry.

  • Industry in Ghana : production form and spatial structure
  • 1981
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the West African economies the incorporation into the world market has resulted in a variety of social production forms. Apart from the marginally remaining pre-capitalist forms, formal production on the pattern of the advanced industrialised economies is found side-by-side with a substantial of informally organised activities. The latter are specialised activities which retain pre-capitalist forms of social organisation and modes of interaction while they are in various ways integrated in the market for rawmaterials, output, labour and skills. This study of the structure of production forms found in the manufacturing industry in Ghana in the 1960's and of the resulting implications for the structure of the Ghanaian national economy as a whole. Focus is on 'development' implications connected with the spatial organisation of the sector and the spatial element that is found in the division of labour between formal and informal industry. It is thus a contribution to the probe into the forms for 'articulation of modes of production' connected with capitalist penetration in Africa after Independence. It adds to the understanding of the conditions for counteracting structural imbalance and inequality particularly.

  • Marketing cooperatives and peasants in Kenya
  • 1980
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Kenya has a fairly developed cooperative movement, the backbone of which is agricultural marketing cooperatives. Studies of the cooperative movement in Kenya, however, are still exceptional, particularly studies which highlight the impact of marketing cooperatives on the socio-economic relations of the peasantry and vice versa. Some have seen the marketing cooperatives in Kenya as instruments in the hands of a rural elite, which is linked firmly to the political elite and the bureaucrats. Others have emphasized their parastatal character. Very few have ended up with positive conclusions saying that they are instruments in the hands of the peasantry, which further the interests of the peasantry. This study also reveals numerous shortcomings of the marketing cooperatives, based on an in-depth study of a selected peasant society. They still suffer from organizational rigidity, low educational standards, and indifference on the part of most peasants. But on the other hand the development trend during the last decade has been positive, and the marketing cooperatives have not led to increasing social differentiation in the selected study area. On the contrary the marketing cooperatives rather seem to have preserved the existing egalitarian social structure, and reversely the egalitarian social structure seems to provide a fruitful basis for the development of marketing cooperatives.

  • Wood, energy and households : perspectives on rural Kenya
  • 1984
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many developing countries have been hard hit by the double "energy crisis" of threatened fuelwood supply and the increasing burden of oil imports. During the last decade energy provision has become a vitally important issue so that energy is now regarded as a basic factor of production ranking in importance with classical components: land, labour and capital. Careful and innovative energy planning has become a necessity for successful development. This book, dealing with the role of woodfuels in rural Kenya, is the first in the series of technical support Volumes for the Main Summary Report of the Kenya Fuelwood Project, "Energy and Development in Kenya: Opportunities and Constraints". This series report on the methodology and findings of the Kenyan and SADCC studies.
