  • Ambivalent and Consistent Relationships : The Role of Personal Networks in Cases of Domestic Violence
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Social Inclusion. - : Cogitatio. - 2183-2803. ; 9:4, s. 211-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social networks are usually considered as positive sources of social support, a role which has been extensively studied in the context of domestic violence. To victims of abuse, social networks often provide initial emotional and practical help as well useful information ahead of formal institutions. Recently, however, attention has been paid to the negative responses of social networks. In this article, we advance the theoretical debate on social networks as a source of social support by moving beyond the distinction between positive and negative ties. We do so by proposing the concepts of relational ambivalence and consistency, which describe the interactive processes by which people, intentionally or inadvertently, disregard—or align with—each other’s role‐relational expectations, therefore undermining—or reinforcing—individual’s choices of action. We analyse the qualitative accounts of 19 female victims of domestic violence in Sweden, who described the responses of their personal networks during and after the abuse. We observe how the relationships embedded in these networks were described in ambivalent and consistent terms, and how they played a role in supporting or undermining women in reframing their loving relationships as abusive; in accounting or dismissing perpetrators’ responsibilities for the abuse; in relieving women from role‐expectations and obligations or in burdening them with further responsibilities; and in supporting or challenging their pathways out of domestic abuse. Our analysis suggests that social isolation cannot be considered a simple result of a lack of support but of the complex dynamics in which support is offered and accepted or withdrawn and refused.

  • Being family and friends to abused women–a qualitative study of digital media in intimate partner violence.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: People, Technology, and Social Organization: Interactionist Studies of Everyday Life. - 9781003277750 - 9781032230689 ; , s. 25-41
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In research on intimate partner violence, most studies focus on those who are abused. In this chapter, we focus on how families, friends, relatives, and employers of abuse victims interact through the use of smartphones, social media platforms, apps, and other internet-connected devices. We discuss how digital technology is integrated into the lives of domestic abuse victims and their social networks: friends, relatives, family, and coworkers. Digital technology has increased the reach of abuse in close relationships, extending the troubles beyond the borders of the couple immediately involved and providing new ways and opportunities for perpetrators to be present even when physically absent.

  • Revealing hidden realities : disclosing domestic abuse to informal others
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Criminology. - 2578-983X. ; 21:2, s. 186-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known about the initial disclosure process when victims of domestic abuse break their silence and tell family, friends, neighbours or colleagues. This study draws on interviews with 21 Swedish women and analyses the interactional and emotional processes of the first disclosure. Shame, perpetrator threats, child custody issues, fear over increased/expanded violence, and how disclosure will affect social interactions were mentioned as reasons for hesitating to reveal the abuse to their social network. Women who had a planned disclosure had decided to tell someone regardless of concerns about potential negative outcomes, referring to the need for emotional and practical support. These women told a person of their choice in a situation they themselves chose. Women also revealed their hidden realities as an unplanned response to a specific situation described as turning points. Unplanned disclosures were also a result of someone in the woman’s network noticing the abuse, more or less forcing the woman to tell. This study reveals the dynamics resulting in the interviewed women’s first disclosure of being abused. We also discuss the nuances in disclosure decisions and offer insight into what is crucial for making domestic abuse visible to others.

  • The double-edged sword – abused women’s experiences of digital technology
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-2664 .- 1369-1457.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technology has become a vital part of people’s lives. Mobile phones, smart phones, social media platforms, apps and other internet-connected devices and software have changed our way of interacting with each other, as well as managing everyday tasks. In this article, the use of such technology is discussed in relation to its integration in the lives of women who are victims of domestic violence. The study is based on interviews with 21 Swedish women, all abused by their former husband or boyfriend. The empirical data demonstrates how technology is used by the perpetrators as a means of coercive control. The analysis shows that the accessibility of digital media enables the abuser to be constantly present in the woman’s life, even after she has left him. However, the same technology is also important to the women, enabling them to manage victimisation, monitor the perpetrators, store evidence, obtain information, gain support and keep in touch with family and friends. This article reveals the use of technology in IPV as a ‘double-edged sword’; providing the capacity to protect and even to use as a ‘counter-strike’ by victims, as well as enhancing perpetrators’ capacity to harm.

  • Burnout among midwives—the factorial structure of the burnout assessment tool and an assessment of burnout levels in a Swedish national sample
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Health Services Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1472-6963. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Many workplaces, within the healthcare sector, experience high rates of mental health problems such as burnout, anxiety, and depression, due to poor psychosocial working conditions and midwives are not an exception. To develop preventive interventions, epidemiologic surveillance of burnout levels, and their relation to professional specific working conditions is needed. Aims of this study is to assess the construct validity of the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) in the context of Swedish midwives, to evaluate whether the item responses can be combined into a single score and differential item functioning regarding age. Another aim was to assess the burnout levels of Swedish midwives. Methods: Data come from a national cohort of Swedish midwives (n = 1664). The construct validity was evaluated using Rasch analysis. Burnout levels were presented by median and first (Q1) and third (Q3) quartiles for the BAT total score and the four subscales (exhaustion, mental distance, cognitive and emotional impairment). Results: In the analysis including all 23 items the fit to the Rasch model was not obtained. Items within each subscale clustered together in a residual correlation matrix in a pattern consistent with the underlying conceptualization of the BAT, indicating multidimensionality. The Rasch analysis was re-run using the four testlets as input variables which resulted in a good fit. The median burnout level was 2.0 (Q1 = 1.6, Q3 = 2.4). The four subscales differentiated the picture (elevated levels on exhaustion and low levels on the other three subscales). Conclusions: The construct validity of the BAT for use in the context of Swedish midwives was confirmed. The results indicated a strong general factor, meaning that the responses can be combined into a single burnout score. The scale works invariantly for different age groups. The results of this study secure access to a validated instrument to be used for accurate assessment of the burnout levels among midwives in Sweden.

  • Why Meetings Matter : Everyday Arenas for Making, Performing and Maintaining Organisations
  • 2024
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This innovative book argues that meetings are a crucial feature of modern organisations, demonstrating that, contrary to popular belief, meetings are what define, represent and maintain organisations. Through an in-depth analysis of ethnographic case studies, Patrik Hall, Malin Åkerström and Erika Andersson Cederholm illustrate the inner workings of meetings, exploring phenomena such as meeting chains, meeting escapes, the digitalisation of meetings, subtle meeting diplomacy, and seductive business events. This book emphasises how negotiations, collaborations and power dynamics are performed during meetings, making meetings the most fundamental working map of organisational hierarchies. Ultimately, Why Meetings Matter highlights the crucial importance of meetings in an increasingly collaborative professional working landscape. Offering a cutting-edge approach to a longstanding social phenomenon, this book will be of great interest to academics, students and researchers in the fields of sociology, political science and organisation studies. Including ethnographic studies with practical case-based applications, it will appeal in particular to office-based professionals as it provides new insights into a taken-for-granted workplace activity.

  • Ambivalenta offernarrativ : Unga män, etnicitet och maskulinitet
  • 2021
