  • Critical Design and the creation of alternative visions : literally and metaphorically Critical
  • 2014
  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Critical design methods and thinking is gaining increasing interest during design of artefacts, applied mainly by interaction designers in order to create designs that cause reflections (on roles, norms, values, practices, cultures). It forces reflection among the users of the artefacts, since the artefact is aimed to provoke, and to support visions of alternative realities, other ways of being and living. However, ways to create such provocations, reflections and visions among the professionals (designers, researchers and practitioners) is not explored as much. If considering critical design rather as a position than an approach for design, how can we support reflection among us as professionals? Thereby, enable usage of critical design in our profession? These, and related questions, will be reflected upon and discussed during the workshop.

  • Outcome of physiotherapy after surgery for cervical disc disease: a prospective randomised multi-centre trial
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2474. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Many patients with cervical disc disease require leave from work, due to long-lasting, complex symptoms, including chronic pain and reduced levels of physical and psychological function. Surgery on a few segmental levels might be expected to resolve disc-specific pain and reduce neurological deficits, but not the non-specific neck pain and the frequent illness. No study has investigated whether post-surgery physiotherapy might improve the outcome of surgery. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate whether a well-structured rehabilitation programme might add benefit to the customary post-surgical treatment for cervical disc disease, with respect to function, disability, work capability, and cost effectiveness. Methods/Design: This study was designed as a prospective, randomised, controlled, multi-centre study. An independent, blinded investigator will compare two alternatives of rehabilitation. We will include 200 patients of working age, with cervical disc disease confirmed by clinical findings and symptoms of cervical nerve root compression. After providing informed consent, study participants will be randomised to one of two alternative physiotherapy regimes; (A) customary treatment (information and advice on a specialist clinic); or (B) customary treatment plus active physiotherapy. Physiotherapy will follow a standardised, structured programme of neck-specific exercises combined with a behavioural approach. All patients will be evaluated both clinically and subjectively (with questionnaires) before surgery and at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months after surgery. The main outcome variable will be neck-specific disability. Cost-effectiveness will also be calculated. Discussion: We anticipate that the results of this study will provide evidence to support physiotherapeutic rehabilitation applied after surgery for cervical radiculopathy due to cervical disc disease.

  • Representational practices in demands driven development of public sector
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: ELECTRONIC GOVERNMENT (EGOV 2013). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. - 9783642403576 - 9783642403583 ; , s. 200-211
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper concerns representational practices in demands driven development of public sector, and the problems they involve. The term demands driven development refers to a movement in public sector towards a closer cooperation with the citizens, primarily with regards to the development of public e-services. The objective with the paper is to explore representational practices through the analysis of practitioners' talk about demands driven development. There are several interrelated problems with representational practices, in this paper analysed through the discussions of practitioners who work with demands driven development of public sector. The conclusion is that these practitioners work with representational practices in a way which they at the same time seem to consider rather problematic.

  • Individual factors associated with neck disability in patients with cervical radiculopathy scheduled for surgery : A study on physical impairments, psychosocial factors, and life style habits
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Spine Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0940-6719 .- 1432-0932. ; 23:3, s. 599-605
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The influence of individual factors on patient-reported outcomes is important in the interpretation of disability and treatment effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to assess how physical impairments, psychosocial factors, and life style habits were associated with neck disability based on the Neck Disability Index (NDI), in patients with cervical radiculopathy scheduled for surgery. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 201 patients (105 men, 96 women; mean age 50 years). Data included self-reported measures and a clinical examination. Multiple linear regressions were performed to identify significant influencing factors. Results: Pain, physical impairments in the cervical active range of motion, low self-efficacy, depression, and sickness-related absences explained 73 % of the variance in NDI scores (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Assessments of physical impairments and psychosocial factors in patients with cervical radiculopathy could improve the description of neck disability and the interpretation of treatment outcomes in longitudinal studies.

  • Multivariate data analysis applied to MRS and MRI studies of aging and spinal cord injury
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Magnetic resonance can be used for non-invasive studies of the body without the use of ionizing radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy have proven to be valuable utilities for research in life sciences. This thesis deals with magnetic resonance investigations of the central nervous system in vivo and is based on four studies. In studies I-III in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy data were acquired in three animal models. These models were designed to monitor Alzheimer’s disease, spinal cord injury and premature aging. We wanted to quantify and evaluate the differences in metabolite levels in diseased animals in comparison with controls. In study IV, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was applied to investigate young and elderly human subjects. Three different pre-processing procedures were also evaluated. Furthermore, in this thesis we aimed to explore how data acquired with magnetic resonance spectroscopy and functional magnetic resonance imaging can be extracted and analyzed using model free and model driven multivariate data analyses. The linear multivariate data analysis methods principal components analysis and partial least squares projections to latent structures were applied to magnetic resonance spectroscopy data acquired in rodents. Independent component analysis was applied to the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data acquired in human subjects. Group differences in brain metabolites between diseased and control animals were observed and reported in study I-III. By applying the method partial least squares projections to latent structures to all detected metabolites, we were able to develop models that could differentiate the diseased rodents from the normal controls and evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the models. In study IV we investigated the effects of preprocessing prior to independent component analysis. We found that global signal removal can enhance anti-correlation in resting-state functional connectivity networks. We also found that normal brain aging can lead to significant changes in functional connectivity.
