  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation focus on the social structure in the Norrlandic society during the Middle Ages. In the study of social relations I have proceeded from the way that daily life is expressed in two social spaces: the village and the farm. The social organization of the medieval village has been investigated on the basis of medieval craft and the organization of economic pursuits in the outland. This has been analysed with the focus on the village of Ängersjö in north-west Hälsingland, and it is based on the totality of archaeological remains, settlement development, and an archaeological excavation of a smithy. Apart from this the division of labour and rural craft in medieval agrarian society has been discussed with examples from the province of Hälsingland. The social space of the medieval farm is investigated in the dissertation by surveying the arrangement of the buildings and the use of space. The analyses of the medieval farm space are based on two excavated farm complexes, Björka in Hälsingland and Kyrklägdan in Jämtland. The method has above all entailed the analysis of find distribution. This dissertation has shown that the picture of the social structure in northern Sweden needs to be qualified. This is only possible when one applies a local perspective, which means that several social hierarchies can be distinguished within Norrlandic peasant society. The results of the dissertation have demonstrated the occurrence of social hierarchies at the level of village and farm. These hierarchies can be discerned, among other things, on the basis of a spatial division of activities which can be related to the degree of division of labour in the household, a difference in patterns of consumption between different farms and in the social organization of resource utilization, which was partly governed by a hierarchical structure within the peasant community.

  • A short story about the Grevlunda motte in Scania, Sweden – former Denmark: from Bronze Age Grave to viking castle
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Château Gaillard : Studien zur mittelalterlichen Wehrbau- und Siedlungsforschung. - 2902685157 ; 21
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of Scanias earliest castles, Grevlunda, has been reinvestigated. The first excavation in 1913 gave an interesting result but the time was not ripe for understanding what really was found. In 2002 archaeologists in corporation with historians, and culture geographers found out that the Grevlunda was a motte of a rare construction. The pottery material gave a dating to the late 12:th century. The castle had been private owned and the place had a continuity back to Viking age. The Grevlunda castle is the first known motte in Scania and also the only private owned early medieval castle yet known in the county.

  • Tankar kring två ringhandtag från Uppåkra
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Flera fynd i Centrum - Materialstudier i och kring Uppåkra (Acta archaeologica lundensia series in 8. no.45). - 0065-0994. ; Uppåkrastudier 9, s. 89-96
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Two ring handles were found in Uppåkra by the archaeological excavations. The first one was found by metal detector survey near the church of Uppåkra and was assumed to have beonged to the medieval Church that in the 19:th cent. was replaced by the modern church. The other ring handle was found by in one of the foure large postholes in the cult house and was dated to 500-600 A.D. The ring handles comes from two shrines representing two religions. The christian ring handle has three knobs representing the Holy Trinity. The pre-Christian ring handle has four knobs. A guess is that they symbolize four gods - perhaps represented in the four big postholes of the cult house
