  • Exploring the diluted ferromagnetic p-spin model with a cavity master equation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical review. E. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0045 .- 2470-0053. ; 97:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce an alternative solution to Glauber multispin dynamics on random graphs. The solution is based on the recently introduced cavity master equation (CME), a time-closure turning the, in principle, exact dynamic cavity method into a practical method of analysis and of fast simulation. Running CME once is of comparable computational complexity as one Monte Carlo run on the same problem. We show that CME correctly models the ferromagnetic p-spin Glauber dynamics from high temperatures down to and below the spinoidal transition. We also show that CME allows an alternative exploration of the low-temperature spin-glass phase of the model.

  • Anti-Ro52 monoclonal antibodies specific for amino acid 200-239, but not other Ro52 epitopes, induce congenital heart block in a rat model
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Annals of the rheumatic diseases. - : BMJ. - 1468-2060 .- 0003-4967. ; 71:3, s. 448-454
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Congenital heart block (CHB) may develop in fetuses of women with anti-Ro/La autoantibodies following placental transfer of maternal autoantibodies and disruption of the fetal atrioventricular (AV) conduction system. Animal models of CHB currently rely on immunisation or transfer of anti-Ro/La antibodies purified from mothers of children with CHB, which does not allow precise identification of the disease-inducing antibody specificity.ObjectiveTo determine the ability of different anti-Ro52 monoclonal antibodies to induce cardiac electrophysiological abnormalities in vivo and affect the calcium homoeostasis of cardiomyocytes in vitro.MethodsMonoclonal antibodies recognising different domains of Ro52 were generated and injected into pregnant rats, and ECG was recorded on newborn pups. Cultures of rat neonatal cardiomyocytes were established to assess the effect of the different anti-Ro52 monoclonal antibodies on calcium homoeostasis.ResultsFirst-degree AV block and bradycardia developed after maternal transfer of antibodies specific for amino acids 200–239 of Ro52 (p200), while pups exposed to antibodies targeting N- or C-terminal epitopes of Ro52 did not show any electrocardiogram abnormalities. Addition of an anti-p200 antibody to cultured cardiomyocytes induced calcium dyshomoeostasis in a time- and dose-dependent manner, while addition of other Ro52 antibodies had no effect.ConclusionThese data for the first time show unambiguously that antibodies specific for amino acids 200–239 of Ro52 can induce cardiac conduction defects in the absence of other autoantibodies, and may therefore be the main initiators of cardiac pathology in the pool of anti-Ro52 antibodies in mothers of children with CHB.

  • Statistics of polymer extensions in turbulent channel flow
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review E. Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics. - 1539-3755 .- 1550-2376. ; 86:5, s. 056314-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow with passive Lagrangian polymers. To understand the polymer behavior we investigate the behavior of infinitesimal line elements and calculate the probability distribution function (PDF) of finite-time Lyapunov exponents and from them the corresponding Cramer's function for the channel flow. We study the statistics of polymer elongation for both the Oldroyd-B model (for Weissenberg number Wi<1) and the FENE model. We use the location of the minima of the Cramer's function to define the Weissenberg number precisely such that we observe coil-stretch transition at Wi1. We find agreement with earlier analytical predictions for PDF of polymer extensions made by Balkovsky, Fouxon, and Lebedev for linear polymers (Oldroyd-B model) with Wi <1 and by Chertkov for nonlinear FENE-P model of polymers. For Wi >1 (FENE model) the polymer are significantly more stretched near the wall than at the center of the channel where the flow is closer to homogenous isotropic turbulence. Furthermore near the wall the polymers show a strong tendency to orient along the streamwise direction of the flow, but near the center line the statistics of orientation of the polymers is consistent with analogous results obtained recently in homogeneous and isotropic flows.

  • Continuum Modeling of Masjed E Soleyman Power House Cavern using an Empirical Continuum Media
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: ARMA's Golden Rocks 2006 - 50 Years of Rock Mechanics.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Numerical modeling is a useful tool to design underground openings. Masjed ESoleyman Power House Cavern is one of the largest caverns in the Middle East. Ramamurthy introduced an empirical equivalent media in 1994. Ramamurthy Equivalentmedia was applied to a Finite element analysis. Phase2D software was used to analyzecontinuum media. The displacements obtained from Equivalent continuum analysis were compared to those measured by MultiPoint Borehole Extensometers (MPBX).

  • Integrated sewage sludge treatment scenarios – techno-economic analysis on energy and phosphorus recovery
  • 2022
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sewage sludge is a by-product of wastewater treatment that simultaneously gathers contaminants, valuable organic matter, and nutrients. The treatment of the increasing amount of sewage sludge is important from both pollution prevention and resource recovery perspectives as i) large shares of mineral phosphorus, listed as a critical raw material, terminate in the sewage sludge, and ii) energy recovery from sewage sludge can cover the energy-intensive demand of the treatment process. Previous research has identified sewage sludge combustion as a suitable treatment approach as it both addresses contaminant destruction and paves the way for efficient phosphorus recovery from the sewage sludge ash. The commercial development of this practice has, however, been slow. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate the challenges in sustainable sewage sludge management, and to, in more detail, identify the economic viability of energy and phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge through combustion. The thesis’ aim is divided into two objectives addressed in three papers. First, to investigate how different aspects of sewage sludge management, such as contaminants, economic efficiency, technical aspects, and legislation, evolve and interact. This has been done by a review of sewage sludge management research over fifty years (Paper I). Second, to investigate the economic viability of simultaneous energy and phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge by comparing different technology and market scenarios. This has been done for i) new sewage sludge mono-/co-combustion plants (Paper II), and ii) the integration of treatment technologies, mainly anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal carbonization, and combustion, in an existing wastewater treatment plant (Paper III). Results from the analysis of sewage sludge management research (Paper I) show a narrow-focused perspective that often excludes inseparable aspects such as combination of economic consideration and advanced extraction technology. The investment viability of a new mono-/co-combustion of sewage sludge (Paper II) is highly conditional on heat, electricity, and fertilizer price, and external financial support is often a crucial requirement. Sewage sludge co-combustion with potassium-rich biomasses improves sewage sludge quality and forms usable ash as fertilizer without further need for phosphorus recovery technology. In this case, the economic feasibility of the process is independent of usable ash revenue, which stimulates a competitive selling price for the ash, thereby improving the marketing of sludge-based fertilizer. Avoided disposal costs of sewage sludge for a retrofitted wastewater treatment plant by introducing hydrothermal carbonization (Paper III) shows good economic feasibility while recovering phosphorus. Integrating anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal carbonization, and combustion may also improve investment incentives by improving energy outputs and phosphorus recovery. The economic feasibility is contingent on product (hydrochar, heat, electricity) prices and sensitive to added equipment costs, and costs for sludge transportation and disposal.

  • Lightweight Formal Method for Robust Routing in Track-based Traffic Control Systems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 2020 18TH ACM-IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON FORMAL METHODS AND MODELS FOR SYSTEM DESIGN (MEMOCODE). - : IEEE. ; , s. 115-124
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we propose a robust solution for the path planning and scheduling of the moving objects in a Track-based Traffic Control System (TTCS). The moving objects in a TTCS pass over pre-specified sub-tracks. Each sub-track accommodates at most one moving object in-transit. Due to the uncertainties in the context of a TTCS, we assign an arrival time window to each moving object for each sub-track in its route, instead of an exact value. The moving object can safely enter into the sub-track in the mentioned time window. To develop a safe plan, we adapt the tagged-signal model and provide a rigorous mathematical formalism for the actor model of a TTCS. To illustrate the applicability of the provided semantics, we provide a formal model of TTCSs in the Alloy language and use its analyzer to verify the developed model against system safety properties.
