  • Hoppets lyrik : Tre diktare och en ny bild av fyrtiotalismen – Ella Hillbäck, Rut Hillarp, Ann Margret Dahlquist-Ljungberg
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of the dissertation is twofold: to call attention to three Swedish women poets of the 1940s and to change the image of the Swedish modernist movement of the 1940s as an era of pessimism. During the 1940s lyrical modernism had a definitive breakthrough in Sweden. Several women poets made their debuts during this period, but they have been overlooked in literary history. This marginalization raises the question of how the concept of the Swedish modernist movement of the 1940s might change if these women poets are included. The first chapter of the dissertation explores the nature of the Swedish modernist movement of the 1940s by studying literary handbooks, literary research and contemporary reception and criticism. The three following chapters, respectively, are devoted to readings of the poetry of Ella Hillbäck (1914–1979), Rut Hillarp (1914–2003), and Ann Margret Dahlquist-Ljungberg (1915–2002). Their poetry shares several characteristics with the Swedish modernist movement of the 1940s as it is described in literary handbooks, but their poems differ in one significant way: they express a hope for renewal. This hope contrasts with what is often said to be one of the distinguishing features of the movement – namely pessimism. This hope for renewal is tied to nature in Hillbäck’s poetry, to love in Hillarp’s poems and to a polyphonic structure in Dahlquist-Ljungberg’s poetry. These three chapters also include critical readings of male poets Erik Lindegren and Karl Vennberg and two other female poets, Maria Wine and Elsa Grave. Their poetry expresses hope for renewal to the same extent as Hillbäck, Hillarp and Dahlquist-Ljungberg. Therefore, the final chapter of the dissertation argues that the concept of the Swedish modernist movement of the 1940s needs to be reassessed – not only by the inclusion of women’s poetry, but also on a re-reading of poetry by male authors.

  • Assessing health and moral stress in IT-based work
  • 2004
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Health and Moral Stress Questionnaire (HMSQ) was constructed with the aim to assess organizational learning processes and individual skills necessary for the handling of problems connected to five areas of activity: work demands, work task control, support, computer tool use, and ethics. The main hypothesis was that the existence of organizational learning processes and individual skills contributes to lower levels of stress by providing the knowledge needed to solve the problems arising during IT-supported work. The results showed that it is possible to construct a questionnaire to assess organizational learning and personal skills as a factor defining stress level at IT-based work. High levels of reliability were obtained. In accordance to our hypothesis five factors could be discerned as well as an underlying factor representing learning processes and personal skills.

  • Staphylococcus aureus, but not Staphylococcus epidermidis, modulates the oxidative response and induces apoptosis in human neutrophils
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Acta Pathologica, Microbiologica et Immunologica Scandinavica (APMIS). - : Wiley. - 0903-4641 .- 1600-0463. ; 112:2, s. 109-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • S. epidermidis is the most common isolate in foreign body infections. The aim of this study was to understand why S. epidermidis causes silent biomaterial infections. In view of the divergent inflammatory responses S. epidermidis and S. aureus cause in patients, we analyzed how they differ when interacting with human neutrophils. Neutrophils interacting with S. epidermidis strains isolated either from granulation tissue covering infected hip prostheses or from normal skin flora were tested by measuring the oxidative response as chemiluminescence and apoptosis as annexin V binding. Different S. aureus strains were tested in parallel. All S. epidermidis tested were unable to modulate the oxidative reaction in response to formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP) and did not provoke, but rather inhibited, apoptosis. In contrast, some S. aureus strains enhanced the oxidative reaction, and this priming capacity was linked to p38-mitogen-activated-protein-kinase (p38-MAPK) activation and induction of apoptosis. Our results may explain why S. epidermidis is a weak inducer of inflammation compared to S. aureus, and therefore responsible for the indolent and chronic course of S. epidermidis biomaterial infections.

  • The Obvious & The Essential : Interpreting Software Development & Organizational Change
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Examining how our basic values affect development processes is the overall theme of this thesis. In practice, the question is investigated in relation to software development and organizational change and in research, in relation to science and its relationship to common sense, specifically within the area of Human Computer Interaction. The thesis discusses how it might be possible to discover what is essential for development processes and why the essential may be interpreted as something other than the simply obvious. This thesis examines ways of studying and understanding our social environment and development processes, particularly those concerning people, organizations and software. The empirical examples deal with a software development project and a project that scrutinized the strategy for a governmental authority’s business and information technology. Attitudes are discussed in terms of how they view the user, the customer, the software developers, the software, organizational and implementation processes, organizational management, aesthetic values, functionality and use, research, methods, paradigmatic approaches, ethical issues, psychological reactions, sociological prerequisites, categorizations of people and stress-related health consequences. One particular prerequisite for developing superior computer-supported office work has repeatedly presented itself: an open, questioning attitude towards the software development process, towards organizational change and towards the people working in the organizations. A similar attitude towards research and its design can be crucial to the development of new knowledge. This circumstance can be interpreted as an indication of how important it is that we be aware of and question our preconceived notions, in order to develop an autonomous behavior where we take responsibility for our actions. By doing so, we can avoid misinterpretations and not get trapped into making categorizations that are simply obvious. This is essential and must be emphasized in our search for the path to »healthy work«.
