  • The contradiction in strategic research programmes : Support established processes or nurture new product ideas, or do both?
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The path between science and innovation is not yet fully mapped. The path is not linear from the discovery of a research finding, to the creation of a technology, and to the market introduction of a physical product, service or process based on scientific findings. Instead, innovation, technology, and science interact. The actors, i.e. the scientist, the engineer, and the entrepreneur or the intrapreneur, are involved in processes facilitated by social networks. The objective of this paper is to explore and explain critical issues for technology transfer and commercialization from a university research programme. Findings are based on a longitudinal in-depth case study of a Swedish university research programme in microelectronics, Eproper. The conclusions of this article are: a) the actors involved in the start of a research programme influence the social network for the whole programme b) there are two different rationales of developing research results: the academic loop and the commercial loop, and c) different sets of skills are needed to license a technology or to build a new venture.

  • Hur sambruka kommunala e-tjänster? - Arbetsformer och affärsmodeller för semi-öppen programvara
  • 2007

  • Development of product-service systems : challenges and opportunities for the manufacturing firm
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering design (Print). - : Taylor & Francis. - 0954-4828 .- 1466-1837. ; 20:4, s. 329-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Product-Service Systems (PSS) raise interesting opportunities for the manufacturing firm as the function is provided to meet customer needs rather than the physical hardware itself. PSS offerings based on the manufacturers knowledge about the product and the technology can increase its status as problem-solver and solution-provider, reduce life cycle cost and produce high revenue. However, PSS including, e.g. hardware, services, software and electronics are efficient and competitive only if developed for the specific purpose with features such as easy to maintain, upgradeable, with built-in sensors for collecting in-use and service data, and easy to use. This changes the requirements on the manufacturing firms development process. Looking back historically, the last century gives an interesting changing landscape of the rationale for the product-development methods used in manufacturing firms. This article, based on the previous research in the product- and service-development fields, and on empirical results from studies at several manufacturing firms, looks into how the engineering work is affected by PSS and how it can be enhanced for PSS, especially in terms of required competencies and other capabilities. It results in recommendations for a new, functional product-development process.

  • Serving Customers Together : Support for Interorganisational Product Realisation in SMEs
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Swedish Production Symposium 2008. - Stockholm, Sweden : KTH.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many companies collaborate in company networks in order to increase the competence available for development and manufacturing of products. These companies need to exchange information during all phases in a product realisation project. This information may be very sensitive, eg in the early concept phases for a new product or very important for the production output in the later phases. The objective of this paper is to investigate opportunities and challenges with IT support for interorganisational complex product realisation for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing industry. Based on three industrial cases the findings show that there are three types of challenges to manage for SMEs that want to collaborate; (1) strategic collaboration, (2) im-provement collaboration, and (3) operative collaboration. These three types of collaboration are critical in order to improve the way customers are served by SMEs.

  • Requirement Analysis for User-Oriented Service Design
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Asian International Journal of Science and Technology Production & Manufacturing Engineering. - : King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok Press. - 1906-151X. ; 2:3, s. 11-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In manufacturing, systems combining physical products and services have been attracting much attention. For such systems, designers need to focus on customer requirements rather than on the achievement of functionality. Methods are proposed in this paper for the analysis of requirements and extension of the design process proposed in Service Engineering. The focus is on the specification of service users in a client organization and on the extraction of their requirements in consideration of the organizational objectives of the client. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by an application, where a bank is a target client of a service.

  • Business Implications of Integrated Product and Service Offerings
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1st CIRP Industrial Product-Service Systems (IPS2) Conference. - : Cranfield CERES. - 9780955743658 ; , s. 165-172
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the business implications of Integrated Product and Service Offerings (IPSOs). The objective is to show examples of the business implications of IPSOs from a supplier’s perspective, and to suggest specifications for supporting methods needed for such an industrial company. The paper is largely based on empirical case studies of 120 Swedish manufacturing companies of all sizes. Results from the case studies show that both small and large companies that conduct the transition towards IPSOs face several important strategic challenges, some of them associated with high risk.

  • Learning networks : a method for Integrated Product and Service Engineering - experience from the IPSE project
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Manufacturing Systems and Technologies for the New Frontier. - London : Springer. - 9781848002661 - 9781848002678 ; , s. 495-500
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim with the Integrated Product and Service Engineering (IPSE) project is to develop a methodology for companies that want to make the journey of moving from selling products to also sell Integrated Product and Service Offerings. In order to achieve that major changes are needed in the companies. In this paper the learning network approach is described as well as the content of the workshop series that the companies participated in. The findings show that a learning network approach is beneficial methodology for achieving changes in the companies, since the participants learn from each other and from the researchers.

  • Innovation and Design Processes in Small Established Companies
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines innovation and design processes in small established companies. There is a great interest in this area yet paradoxically the area is under-researched, since most innovation research is done on large companies. The research questions are: How do small established companies carry out their innovation and design processes? and How does the context and novelty of the process and product affect the same processes? The thesis is built on three research papers that used the research method of multiple case studies of different small established companies. The innovation and design processes found were highly context dependent and were facilitated by committed resources, a creative climate, vision, low family involvement, delegated power and authority, and linkages to external actors such as customers and users. Both experimental cyclical and linear structured design processes were found. The choice of structure is explained by the relative product and process novelty experienced by those developing the product innovation. Linear design processes worked within a low relative novelty situation and cyclical design processes worked no matter the relative novelty. The innovation and design processes found were informal, with a low usage of formal systematic design methods, except in the case of design processes for software. The use of formal systematic methods in small companies seems not always to be efficient, because many of the problems the methods are designed to solve are not present. Customers and users were found to play a large and important role in the innovation and design processes found and gave continuous feedback during the design processes. Innovation processes were found to be intertwined, yielding synergy effects, but it was common that resources were taken from the innovation processes for acute problems that threatened the cash flow. In sum, small established companies have the natural prerequisites to take advantage of lead-user inventions and cyclical design processes. Scarce resources were found to be the main factor hindering innovation, but the examined companies practiced several approaches to increase their resources or use existing scarce resources more efficiently in their innovation and design processes. Examples of these approaches include adopting lead-user inventions and reducing formality in the innovation and design processes.
