  • Särskilda ungdomshem och vårdkedjor : Om ungdomar, kön, klass och etnicitet
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis follows a group of youths placed in secure unit care who have participated in a chain-of-care project aiming to better plan their discharge and aftercare. The overall aim of the thesis is to link a detailed description of these young people with an analysis of the project they participated in, and to undertake one- and two-year follow-up studies. Analytic focus is on the significance of gender, class and ethnicity. The study is mainly based on structured interviews performed at the secure units upon entry into care, discharge and at a one-year follow up. Data have also been used from criminal records and interviews with project staff. When entering care, these youths exhibited extensive problems in both family conditions and own behaviour. The major problem in boys was criminality while girls reported poor mental health. Professionals judge youth of foreign background as more criminal than youth of Swedish background despite a lack of difference in self-reported data. Some difference is also noticeable regarding class.Analysis of the project shows that out-of-home care was the most frequent intervention after leaving secure unit care, while other interventions were difficult to uphold over time. Few girls received help with their mental health problems. At the one-year follow up, the youths reported an overall better situation, although extensive problems still remained. Above all, girls’ mental health problems remained as before. At the 2-year follow up the study group was compared with a control group in order to investigate effects of the project regarding criminality and recommitment to secure unit care. The comparison shows that the project had no effect. This is discussed in relation to poor organization and the difficulty of adjusting a project like this to the target group, along with the substantial part played by gender, class and ethnicity in how the youth are construed and treated.

  • Children exposed to domestic violence : a discussion about research ethics and researchers’ responsibilities
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nordic Social Work Research. - 2156-857X .- 2156-8588. ; 4:1, s. 67-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Children’s exposure to domestic violence has attracted increased interest from researchers. This greater interest necessitates discussion about the methods by which children’s exposure to and descriptions of violence are studied. This article (1) discusses ethical dilemmas in research involving interviewing children exposed to domestic violence in relation to constructions of children as competent and as vulnerable, and (2) suggests a conceptual framework to aid in the design of such studies. The ethical dilemmas discussed concern: (1) research being ethically justified, (2) consent and (3) confidentiality and unsought disclosures. We suggest that combining children’s rights to agency and protection in ethical research that involves interviewing children exposed to violence can be facilitated by using the concepts of closeness and distance.

  • The Trouble with "Troubled Girls"
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Girls at Risk. - New York, NY : Springer. - 9781461441298 - 9781461441304 ; , s. 167-183
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Until recently, boys and men provided the template by which problem behaviors in girls and women were measured. With the shift to studying female development and adjustment through female perspectives comes a need for knowledge of trajectories of at-risk girls’ behavior as they mature. Girls at Risk: Swedish Longitudinal Research on Adjustment fills this gap accessibly and compassionately. Its lifespan approach relates the pathologies of adolescence to later outcomes as girls grow up to have relationships, raise families, and take on adult roles in society.Coverage is balanced between internalizing behaviors, traditionally considered to be more common among females, and externalizing ones, more common among males. The book's detailed review of findings includes several major longitudinal studies of normative and clinical populations, and the possibility of early maturation as a risk factor for pathology is discussed in depth. Contributors not only emphasize "what works" in intervention and prevention but also identify emerging issues in assessment and treatment. An especially powerful concluding chapter raises serious questions about how individuals in the healing professions perceive their mission, and their clients. Although the studies are from one country—Sweden—the situations, and their potential for successful intervention, transcend national boundaries, including:• Adolescent and adult implications of pubertal timing. • Eating disorders and self-esteem. • Prevention of depressive symptoms. • Understanding violence in girls with substance problems. • Lifespan continuity in female aggression and violence. • A life-course perspective in girls' criminality. With insights beyond the beaten path, Girls at Risk provides a wealth of information for researchers, clinicians and related professionals, and graduate students in child and school psychology; psychiatry; education; social work; psychotherapy and counseling; and public health.

  • Children Exposed to Domestic Violence : Conclusions from the Literature and Challenges Ahead
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 1468-0173 .- 1741-296X. ; 10:1, s. 80-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary: This article examines and discusses the research field of children exposed to domestic violence, a field which has greatly expanded during the last 10 years. The author presents an overview of this research, discusses its implications, and describes future challenges and contemporary knowledge gaps.Findings: The author argues that the field is dominated by studies that a) are quantitative, b) use the mothers as the informant and c) are represented by traditional psychology and social medicine, rather than social work. These studies have found substantial support for the negative emotional and behavioral consequences that children exposed to domestic violence suffer. However, many questions and problems remain unanswered. These questions include both the research field itself and the need for new approaches such as qualitative research including the voice of the child, longitudinal studies, and questions regarding methodology and research ethics.Applications: The author argues that there is a need for more qualitative research in general and social work research in particular. The implications for social work practice and policy are discussed.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Norges Barnevern. - 0800-1014 .- 1891-1838. ; 87:1, s. 6-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents results from the first Norwegian nation-wide study on children in shelters for battered women and their situation. One of the qualitative findings; that children who live in shelters with their mothers have difficulties in keeping the shelterstay a secret is discussed specifically. The argument pursued is that the children are struggling to keep the shelter a secret, and that the secrecy creates problems in their everyday life and social relations. Moreover, the children develop a number of strategies to manage the issue of secrecy. Finally, the implications of this is discussed, as well as the secrecy as one of the dilemmas facing the new Norwegian shelter movement with an integrated children’s perspective.

  • Women’s Refuges as Intervention Arenas for Children who Experience Domestic Violence
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Child Care in Practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1357-5279 .- 1476-489X. ; 17:4, s. 375-391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Children often accompany their mothers to women's refuges, where they are at risk of developing behavioural and psychological difficulties. In these situations it is important for the children to be given the possibility to address their own experiences of violence. However, little is known about how children experience these interventions. This study examined children's perceptions about their everyday lives at refuges in Norway. In the first phase of the study, participants included 50 directors of women’s refuges in Norway, who were interviewed via telephone. The second phase included face-to-face interviews with 22 children from 7 refuges. The study asked what interventions do children in refuges receive and how do the children experience those interventions. Findings revealed that the children focused on two forms of interventions as particularly helpful: activities such as trips and outings; and individual counselling. The most important intervention for children who experienced domestic violence was to remove them from a violent environment. As such, the refuge in itself could be considered an intervention. In conclusion, the author describes why women’s refuges represent a unique opportunity for interventions with children.
