    • FIR filters are often used because of their linear-phase response. However, there are certain applications where the linear-phase property is not required, such as signal energy estimation, but IIR filters can not be used due to the limitation of sample rate imposed by the recursive algorithm. In this work, we discuss multiplierless implementation of minimum order, and therefore nonlinear-phase, FIR filters and compare it to the linear-phase counterpart.

    • In this work we consider scaling of fractional delay filters using the Farrow structure. Based on the observation that the subfilters approximate the Taylor expansion of a differentiator, we derive estimates of the L2-norm scaling values at the outputs of each subfilter as well as at the inputs of each delay multiplier. The scaling values can then be used to derive suitable wordlengths in a fixed-point implementation.

  • Performance Evaluation of RAKE Receiver for UWB Systems using Measured Channels in Industrial Environments

    • The industrial environments are an important scenario for ultra wideband (UWB) communication systems. However, due to large number of metallic scatterers in the surroundings, the multipath offered by UWB channels is dense with significant energy. In this paper, the performance of RAKE receivers operating in a non line-of-sight (NLOS) scenario in these environments is evaluated. The channels used for the evaluation are measured in a medium-sized industrial environment. In addition, a standard IEEE 802.15.4a channel model is used for comparison with the results of the measured data. The performance of partial RAKE (PRake) and selective RAKE (SRake)is evaluated in terms of uncoded bit-error-rate (BER) using different number of fingers. The performance of maximal ratio combining (MRC) and equal gain combining (EGC) is compared for the RAKE receiver assuming perfect knowledge of the channel state. Finally, based on the simulation results, conclusions are drawn considering the performance and complexity issues for system design in these environments.

  • Performance evaluation of uplink closed loop power control for LTE system

    • Uplink power control is a key radio resource management feature in the 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE). In order to adapt to changes in the inter-cell interference situation or to correct power amplifier errors, closed-loop adjustments should be applied. In this paper the performance of closed loop power control combined with fractional path loss compensation factor is studied, and an optimal value for the path loss compensation factor is investigated. The closed loop power control with fractional path loss compensation factor is found to improve the system performance in terms of mean bit rate by 68% and utilizes the battery power more effectively.

    • Different bases were used for the pretreatment of Rice bran biomass. Pretreatment with bases such as NaOH, Ca(OH)(2) and Al(OH)(3) were found to improve biosorption capacity. But in Rice bran, treatment with 0.5 M NaOH increased its nickel selective adsorption ability very much. The main binding site of nickel in NaOH treated cells is assumed to be carboxylic, hydroxyl, sulphate, phosphate and amino groups. The maximum biosorption capacity of Rice bran biomass subjected to 0.5 M NaOH was 198.92 mg g(-1). Kinetic and isotherm experiments were carried out at the optimal pH 6.0 for nickel. The Freundlich and Langmuir models were used to describe the uptake of nickel on NaOH pretreated Rice bran. To improve the biosorption capacity for metal ions by biomass, alkali pretreatment is an effective method.
