- The Lebanese are the largest group of Middle Eastern immigrants in the United States, and Lebanese immigrants are also prominent across Europe and the Americas. Based on over eighty interviews with first-generation Lebanese immigrants in the global cities of New York, Montreal and Paris, this book shows that the Lebanese diasporaolike all diasporasoconstructs global relations connecting and transforming their new societies, previous homeland and world-wide communities. Taking Lebanese immigrants' forms of identification, community attachments and cultural expression as manifestations of diaspora experiences, the book delves into the ways members of Lebanese diasporic communities move beyond nationality, ethnicity and religion, giving rise to global solidarities and negotiating their social and cultural spaces. The Lebanese Diaspora explores new forms of identities, alliances and cultural expressions, elucidating the daily experiences of Lebanese immigrants and exploring new ways of thinking about immigration, ethnic identity, community, and culture in a global world. By criticizing and challenging our understandings of nationality, ethnicity and assimilation, the book shows that global immigrants are giving rise to new forms of cosmopolitan citizenship.

- The authors utilize different methodologies, disciplinary traditions, and analytical perspectives. Yet, they all draw our attention to the complex and contradictory ways in which men and women from or living in the Gulf are selectively incorporated into a world society. The workshop papers were summarized and form the basis of this proceedings document prepared by Ghalia Gargani, Acting Director of DSG’s Gender and Public Policy Program, and the workshop organizers for the benefit of the authors and the larger community of scholars, students, and policy makers interested in women and globalization in the GCC. We hope that this document will be a useful reference for those interested in a more nuanced and complex view of women’s “position” in the Gulf.

Perceptions of socioeconomic integration of middle eastern immigrants in Europe : comparing national discourses and subjective experiences

- This panel compares the subjective understanding of success and socioeconomic mobility of immigrants from the Middle East in Europe with national discourses of integration. Despite the abundance of research on Middle Eastern migrants in Europe, not much is known about their subjective understanding of their socioeconomic positions and experience with social mobility. Much of the research looks at objective measures such as educational attainment, occupational status, and reported discrimination. Little research has investigated the ways immigrants and their children on ‘define, experience, and perceive mobility and success’ (Zhou et al. 2008, p. 42). This panel investigates the different narratives of incorporation as presented by official media outlets on the one hand, and the immigrant populations on the other. Looking at key factors of incorporation and social mobility including education attainment and school experiences, and occupational status and labour market experiences the papers in this panel highlight the contradictory narratives of othering and the desire to belong, failure and success, and fear and aspirations. The papers focus on case studies from Germany, France, Sweden and Denmark to provide analyses from traditional European destinations to ones that have only recently dealt with new populations among their midst. Despite their disadvantaged position, the papers show that the majority of immigrants and their children perceive of their experiences both in school and labour market as considerable success. At the same time, national discourses of incorporation and integration stress narratives of fear of Islamization and violence as grounds for exclusion and marginalization. Taken together, the papers allow us to conclude the importance of subjective experiences in understanding processes of integration and mobility among immigrants in various societies in Europe. Such subjective experiences challenge official discourses and shed light on host societies’ willingness to accept new generations of immigrants.

The narratives of the arab uprisings: towards a cultural analysis of social movements in the Middle East

- The popular uprisings that swept many countries in the Middle East during the last three years have been subject to much academic analysis that attempted to interpret the events and their significance for future political developments in the region. Discursive tropes such as revolution, counter-revolution, sectarian strife, and terrorism have been used in such analyses as they have been utilized by many actors to define desirable and undesirable actions. Little attention has been paid to the cultural significance of such tropes and their role in motivating the different forms of action in the first place. This panel looks at how different narratives are constructed, and sometimes inflated, that motivates specific forms of action and legitimizes certain actors. Through presenting case studies from Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen and the Gulf countries, the papers in this panel address the discursive patterns of different actors during the uprisings and in post-revolutionary contexts. Looking at traditional media outlets, group/party controlled digital outlets, and public performances of the different actors, the papers present analyses of the uprisings that challenge dominant understandings of the events that took place during the last three years, and consequently, highlight the importance of cultural analysis to understanding mass movements in the region.
