  • Elastic scattering of 9Li on 208Pb at energies around the Coulomb barrier
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. - 9780735409378 ; 1377, s. 338-340
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied the dynamical effects of the halo structure of 11Li on the scattering on heavy targets at energies around the Coulomb barrier. This experiment was performed at ISAC‐II at TRIUMF with a world record in production of the post‐accelerated 11Li beam. As part of this study we report here on the first measurement of the elastic cross section of the core nucleus, i.e. 9Li on 208Pb, at energies around the Coulomb barrier. A preliminary optical model analysis has been performed in order to extract a global optical potential to describe the measured angular distributions.

  • A spatially explicit scenario-driven model of adaptive capacity to global change in Europe
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Global Environmental Change. - : Elsevier. - 0959-3780 .- 1872-9495. ; 23:5, s. 1211-1224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional impact models combine exposure in the form of scenarios and sensitivity in the form of parameters, providing potential impacts of global change as model outputs. However, adaptive capacity is rarely addressed in these models. This paper presents the first spatially explicit scenario-driven model of adaptive capacity, which can be combined with impact models to support quantitative vulnerability assessment. The adaptive capacity model is based on twelve socio-economic indicators, each of which is projected into the future using four global environmental change scenarios, and then aggregated into an adaptive capacity index in a stepwise approach using fuzzy set theory. The adaptive capacity model provides insight into broad patterns of adaptive capacity across Europe, the relative importance of the various determinants of adaptive capacity, and how adaptive capacity changes over time under different social and economic assumptions. As such it provides a context for the implementation of specific adaptation measures. This could improve integrated assessment models and could be extended to other regions. However, there is a clear need for a better theoretical understanding of the adaptive capacity concept, and its relationship to the actual implementation of adaptation measures. This requires more empirical research and coordinated meta-analyses across regions and economic sectors, and the development of bottom-up modelling techniques that can incorporate human decision making.

  • Performing two DIEP flaps in a working day : an achievable and reproducible practice
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1748-6815. ; 63:4, s. 648-654
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: While the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap is a reliable technique for autologous breast reconstruction, the meticulous dissection of perforators may require lengthy operative times. In our unit, we have performed 600 free flaps for breast reconstruction over 8 years and have reduced operative times with a combination of preoperative computed tomographic angiography (CTA), various anastomotic techniques and the Cook-Swartz implantable Doppler probe for perfusion monitoring. We sought to assess the feasibility of performing two DIEP flaps within the working hours of a single day. Methods: A review of 101 consecutive patients undergoing DIEP flap breast reconstruction in a 12-month period was performed, comparing one DIEP flap per day (n=43) to two DIEP flaps per day (n=58). Complications, outcomes and techniques used were critically analysed. For cases of two DIEP flaps per day, a comparison was made between the use of two separate operating theatres (n=44) and a single consecutive theatre (n=14). Results: Complications did not increase when two DIEP flaps were performed in a single working day. The use of vascular closure staple (VCS) sutures and ring couplers resulted in statistically significant reductions in anastomotic times. The use of two separate theatres for performing two DIEP flaps resulted in a reduction of 59 min in operative time per case (p=0.004). Conclusion: Two DIEP flaps can be safely and routinely performed within the hours of a single working day. By minimising operative times, these techniques can improve productivity and substantially decrease surgeon fatigue.

  • Altered mRNA-expression due to acute mesenteric ischaemia in a porcine model
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1078-5884 .- 1532-2165. ; 41:2, s. 281-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: mRNA changes in the small intestine in response to acute mesenteric ischaemia (AMI) could offer novel diagnostic possibilities, but have not been described. The aim was to characterize the mRNA response to experimental AMI. Materials and methods: Twelve pigs underwent catheterization of the superior mesenteric artery with injection of polivinylalcohol embolization particles or sodium chloride. Laparotomy and intestinal tissue sampling was performed. Microarray analysis was performed using the GeneChip® whole porcine genome array. Results: Seven down-regulated cellular pathways were associated with protein, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Seventeen up-regulated pathways were associated with inflammatory and immunological activity, regulation of extracellular matrix and decreased cellular proliferation. Thrombospondin(THS), Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein 1(MCP-1) and Gap Junction Alpha 1(GJA-1) were consistently up-regulated in all embolized pigs. Genes encoding earlier proposed biomarkers for AMI were up-regulated, such as lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase, or down-regulated, such as intestinal fatty acid binding protein and glutathione S-transferase. Conclusion: This study describes the intestinal tissue response on a gene expression level to AMI. THS, MCP-1 and GJA-1 were consistently up-regulated by ischemia, whereas earlier proposed biomarkers for AMI were not. Gene expression may not be directly linked to the use of the corresponding proteins as potential clinical biomarkers.

  • Scattering of the halo nucleus 11Li and its core 9Li on 208Pb at energies around the Coulomb barrier
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 381:1, s. Art. no. 012085-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first measurement of the elastic scattering of the halo nucleus 11Li and its core 9Li on 208Pb at energies around the Coulomb barrier is presented. The 11Li reaction showed a large cross section for the breakup channel, even at energies well below the barrier. The analysis of the 11Li + 208Pb scattering data in terms of the continuum-discretized coupled-channel calculations indicates that the effect of the coupling to the breakup channels produces a strong suppression of the elastic cross section at energies above and below the barrier. This effect is mainly due to the strong Coulomb coupling to the dipole states in the low-lying continuum of 11Li.

  • Do Halo Nuclei Follow Rutherford Elastic Scattering at Energies Below the Barrier? The Case of 11Li
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 109:26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first measurement of the elastic scattering of the halo nucleus 11Li and its core 9Li on 208Pb at energies near the Coulomb barrier is presented. The 11Li+208Pb elastic scattering shows a strong reduction with respect to the Rutherford cross section, even at energies well below the barrier and down to very small scattering angles. This drastic change of the elastic differential cross section observed in 11Li+208Pb is the consequence of the halo structure of 11Li, as it is not observed in the elastic scattering of its core 9Li at the same energies. Four-body continuum-discretized coupled-channels calculations, based on a three-body model of the 11Li projectile, are found to explain the measured angular distributions and confirm that the observed reduction is mainly due to the strong Coulomb coupling to the dipole states in the low-lying continuum of 11Li. These calculations suggest the presence of a low-lying dipole resonance in 11Li close to the breakup threshold.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to study the dynamics of 11Li and 9Li beams in a strong electric field at energies around the Coulomb barrier, we measured at the ISACII-TRIUMF Facility the angular distribution of elastic and inelastic scattering of 11Li+208Pb at 24.2 and 29.7 MeV and 9Li+208Pb at 24, 29.5 and 33 MeV laboratory energies. We present here the first determination of the angular distribution of the cross section of 9Li+208Pb. The results are compared with theoretical calculations using the double-folding São Paulo Potential (SPP) for the real part and a for the imaginary part a Woods-Saxon potential. A good overall agreement is obtained.
