  • Probabilistic spectrum Gaussian noise estimate for random bandwidth traffic
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IET Conference Publications. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. ; 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A probabilistic spectrum Gaussian noise (PSGN) model is proposed to predict the nonlinear noise for random bandwidth traffic in long-haul elastic optical networks. The model reduces the noise estimate 9.1% on average compared to the standard Gaussian noise model applied to the maximum bandwidth.

  • Static resource allocation for dynamic traffic
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IET Conference Publications. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. - 9781839530074 ; 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A flexible offline probabilistic (FOP) algorithm is designed to aggressively accommodate random bandwidth traffic demands in long-haul networks. Compared to algorithms that configure demands according to their maximum bandwidth, the FOP algorithm can save 15% of the spectrum used, accommodating over 99% of the throughput demand.

  • Regenerator Allocation in Nonlinear Elastic Optical Networks With Random Data Rates
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 Optical Fiber Communications Conference and Exposition, OFC 2018 - Proceedings. - 9781943580385
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We optimize the regenerator allocation in nonlinear elastic networks whose traffic demands have random data rates. Compared with previous regenerator allocation algorithms, our method achieves the same blocking probability with 11% fewer regenerator sites.

  • Capacity bounds in optical communications
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Conference on Optical Communication, ECOC. ; Volume 2017-September, s. 1-3
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fundamental concept of channel capacity and related information-theoretic metrics are reviewed and some techniques to quantify them by means of lower and upper bounds are explained. The importance of properly discretizing the channel model is highlighted.

  • Conditions for a Monotonic Channel Capacity
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 63:3, s. 738-748
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motivated by results in optical communications, where the performance can degrade dramatically if the transmit power is sufficiently increased, the channel capacity is characterized for various kinds of memoryless vector channels. It is proved that for all static point-to-point channels, the channel capacity under an equal-power constraint is a nondecreasing function of power. As a consequence, maximizing the mutual information over all input distributions with a certain power is for such channels equivalent to maximizing it over the larger set of input distributions with upperbounded power. The channel coding theorem is formally proved for an equal-power constraint. For interference channels such as optical wavelength-division multiplexing systems, the primary channel capacity is always nondecreasing with power if all interferers transmit with identical distributions as the primary user. Also, if all input distributions in an interference channel are optimized jointly, then the achievable sum-rate capacity is again nondecreasing. The results generalize to the channel capacity as a function of a wide class of costs, not only power.

  • Implications of information theory in optical fibre communications
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 1364-503X .- 1471-2962. ; 374:2062
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent decades have witnessed steady improvements in our ability to harness the information-carrying capability of optical fibres. Will this process continue, or will progress eventually stall? Information theory predicts that all channels have a limited capacity depending on the available transmission resources, and thus it is inevitable that the pace of improvements will slow. However, information theory also provides insights into how transmission resources should, in principle, best be exploited, and thus may serve as a guide for where to look for better ways to squeeze more out of a precious resource. This tutorial paper reviews the basic concepts of information theory and their application in fibre-optic communications.

  • Influence of Behavioral Models on Multiuser Channel Capacity
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 33:17, s. 3507-3515
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to characterize the channel capacity of a wavelength channel in a wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) system, statistical models are needed for the transmitted signals on the other wavelengths. For example, one could assume that the transmitters for all wavelengths are configured independently of each other, that they use the same signal power, or that they use the same modulation format. In this paper, it is shown that these so-called behavioral models have a profound impact on the single-wavelength achievable information rate. This is demonstrated by establishing, for the first time, upper and lower bounds on the maximum achievable rate under various behavioral models, for a rudimentary WDM channel model.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 31st Annual Conference of the IEEE Photonics Society, IPC 2018.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fundamental information-theoretic concepts are explained for nonspecialists, with emphasis on their practical usAge. The notions of a 'FEC threshold' and a 'nonlinear Shannon limit' are critically reviewed, highlighting their limitations and possible alternatives.
