  • Multi-ethnic genome-wide association study for atrial fibrillation

    • Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects more than 33 million individuals worldwide(1) and has a complex heritability(2). We conducted the largest meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for AF to date, consisting of more than half a million individuals, including 65,446 with AF. In total, we identified 97 loci significantly associated with AF, including 67 that were novel in a combined-ancestry analysis, and 3 that were novel in a European-specific analysis. We sought to identify AF-associated genes at the GWAS loci by performing RNA-sequencing and expression quantitative trait locus analyses in 101 left atrial samples, the most relevant tissue for AF. We also performed transcriptome-wide analyses that identified 57 AF-associated genes, 42 of which overlap with GWAS loci. The identified loci implicate genes enriched within cardiac developmental, electrophysiological, contractile and structural pathways. These results extend our understanding of the biological pathways underlying AF and may facilitate the development of therapeutics for AF.

    • The Lower Ordovician Bjørkasholmen Formation at Flagabro, Scania, southern Sweden, consists of a 0.8m thick succession of carbonates with three siliciclastic mudstones, 5, 1 and 100mm thick, intercalated in the central part of the unit. Carbonate and siliciclastic mudstone beds show both normal and inverse grading. The carbonates are mud-rich and subdivided into a mudstone, a wackestone and a packstone facies. Grain types in the carbonates are mostly shells and shell fragments of brachiopods and trilobites. The carbonate rocks are strongly bioturbated seen as in roundish burrows filled with mud and a clear cement; additionally, bioturbation is reflected in the random orientation of shells. The siliciclastic mudstones are subdivided into two facies; one contains large amounts of shells and is in part grain-supported, the other is matrix-dominated and laminated to massive. The succession reflects sedimentation on a low-inclined shelf equivalent to a mid-ramp to basinal setting. Most mud- and wackestones (facies 3 and 4) represent fair-weather sedimentation, and the intercalated wacke- and packstones (facies 4 and 5) represent concentration of shell debris during high-energy storm. The siliciclastic mudstones in the central part of the succession reflect deposition in a basinal setting. The entire BjOrkasholmen Formation at Flagabro is equivalent to a lowstand of third (?) order without a well-developed internal cyclicity and is in that respect similar to the Bjørkasholmen Formation of oland, but different from the age-equivalent Norwegian sections.

    • We present an efficient method to tailor propagating spin waves in quasi-confined systems. We use nanocontact spin-torque nano-oscillators based on NiFe/Cu/Co spin-valves and study the ferromagnetic and spin-wave resonances (FMR and SWR) of both layers. We employ homodyne-detected ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, resembling spin-torque FMR, to detect the magnetodynamics. The external field is applied in-plane, giving a parallel configuration of the magnetic layers, which do not provide any spin-transfer torque. Instead, the excitation is caused by the Oersted-field. By varying the thickness of the bottom Cu electrode of the devices, we tune the current distribution in the samples, and thereby the Oersted field, which governs the spin wave characteristics.

    • We describe late Miocene tetrapod footprints (tracks) from the Trachilos locality in western Crete (Greece), which show hominin-like characteristics. They occur in an emergent horizon within an otherwise marginal marine succession of Messinian age (latest Miocene), dated to approximately 5.7 Ma (million years), just prior to the Messinian Salinity Crisis. The tracks indicate that the trackmaker lacked claws, and was bipedal, plantigrade, pentadactyl and strongly entaxonic. The impression of the large and non-divergent first digit (hallux) has a narrow neck and bulbous asymmetrical distal pad. The lateral digit impressions become progressively smaller so that the digital region as a whole is strongly asymmetrical. A large, rounded ball impression is associated with the hallux. Morphometric analysis shows the footprints to have outlines that are distinct from modern non-hominin primates and resemble those of hominins. The interpretation of these footprints is potentially controversial. The print morphology suggests that the trackmaker was a basal member of the Glade Hominini, but as Crete is some distance outside the known geographical range of pre-Pleistocene hominins we must also entertain the possibility that they represent a hitherto unknown late Miocene primate that convergently evolved human-like foot anatomy.

    • We demonstrate field and current controlled magnetodynamics in nanocontact spin-torque nano-oscillators based on orthogonal magnetic tunnel junctions. We systematically analyze the microwave properties (frequency f, linewidth Delta f, power P, and frequency tunability df/dI) with their physical origins-perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, dampinglike and fieldlike spin transfer torque (STT), and voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA). These devices present several advantageous characteristics: high emission frequencies (f>20 GHz), high frequency tunability (df/dI=0.25 GHz/mA), and zero-field operation (f similar to 4 GHz). Furthermore, detailed investigation of f(H, I) reveals that df/dI is mostly governed by the large VCMA [287 fJ/(V m)], while STT plays a negligible role.

    • Peking Man, originally named Sinanthropus pekinensis and now known as Homoerectus pekinensis, was among the best documented extinct hominids before the catastrophic lossof almost all the material in 1941. The only diagnostic specimens to survive from the originalexcavations are some teeth in the paleontological collections of Uppsala University, Sweden(PMU). Here we report on the discovery of a new tooth in the PMU collection with notes on thehistory of the three previously known teeth. Together they represent the first four specimens ofPeking Man ever collected.
