- I kapitlet ”Narrativ teknik och känsla i Hemingways ’Hills Like White Elephants’” utgår vi från frågan om det huruvida samtidigt vara känslomässigt berörd av en text och förhålla sig kritiskt till den. I en undersökning av förhållandet mellan estetisk form och känslor argumenterar vi för att kritisk närläsning kan vara ett helt nödvändigt första steg för att uppfatta karaktärers känslor och för att som läsare själv känna känslomässigt engagemang för en text. Analysen fokuserar på de känslor “Hills Like White Elephants” förmedlar genom sin minimalistiska form. Kapitlet diskuterar den effekt formen kan ha på läsaren men snarare än att försöka slå fast vilka känslor som kan eller bör genereras menar vi att pedagogens uppgift främst är att sträva efter att ge studenterna en beredskap för att ta till sig konstverket, det vill säga, arbeta med det som Felski kallar attunement. Vi föreslår tre huvudområden att arbeta med i klassrummet för att uppnå en djupare textförståelse som i sin tur kan leda till attunement. Det första är kulturell och litterär kontext: vad behöver läsaren veta om modernismen för att förstå ”Hills Like White Elephants”? Det andra är analys av miljö, vilket inbegriper bland annat betydelsen av plats men också språkliga konstruktioner och symbolism. Slutligen diskuteras förhållandet mellan karaktärernas känslor och läsarens samt frågan om huruvida det är rimligt att ha som mål att dessa båda parter ska dela känslotillstånd.

Benefits of Digital Technical Information

- In our daily work life, we use a wealth of information, including a category of information produced as a part of products and their life-cycle phases, named digital technical information (DTI). Manufacturing organizations focus more often on the product than on DTI, because DTI’s impact seems almost invisible, despite its crucial role to the product and its life-cycle phases, development, production, maintenance, and destruction. Hence, the aim of this thesis is to describe DTI’s benefits and the research questions: “What are the benefits of the DTI?” and “What are the perceptions of how to measure benefits of DTI?” The thesis contains five studies related to identifying and measuring DTI’s benefits. The empirical material is based on semi-structured interviews and group interviews within five organizations and a survey among manufacturing organizations in Sweden.I used three characteristics of the DTI and two pairs of previously known benefit categories to analyse the benefits. The analysis shows that the benefits are recognized in the particular product’s life cycle phase where the DTI is published. However, the DTI continues to offer benefits in the product’s other life cycle phases. In relationship to the product, the benefits evolve from supporting an individual product to supporting more general product lines or all products and a more complex product is said to increase DTI’s benefits. DTI’s structure adds benefits as synthesized or aggregated DTI, where the DTI is synthesized or aggregated automatically or manually. The categorization predetermined benefits related to the change are less numerous than the emerging benefits. The predetermined benefits are strategic by nature, and the emerging ones are mainly used to achieve operational goals. Measuring DTI’s benefits is of importance for a formal comparison of its development and is of special interest for managers. Perceptions from the initial stages on how to measure show that to establish common interpretations among the stakeholders of the measurement process is of importance, especially when it comes to what is viewed as a benefit. The benefits are viewed as intangible by the respondents, which creates difficulties when one is evaluating, using conventional measurement methods. The only perceived way to measure is when DTI reduces co-worker’s workload and efficiency is achieved. The thesis’s contribution to academia consists of the analysis of DTI’s benefits, showing details of the relationships between the DTI and its benefits. For practice, the contributions focus on the systematic evaluation process, which can be used for further development of the DTI and comparison of the evolvement of the DTI itself and relating to other resources. One proposal for future research is to use the analysed benefits and compare various approaches to digitizing DTI, e.g. Industry 4.0. Another proposal is to list, in detail, various ways on how to measure DTI’s benefits and their usefulness. The latter can positively impact on any intangible benefits due to the general approach we have established of how to measure those benefits.

- Kapitlet undersöker hur adoptioner påverkar flickors och familjemedlemmars liv utifrån L. M. Montgomerys klassiska flickbok om Anne, där adoption skildras i positiva termer och även kan kopplas till huvudpersonens självständighet och frigjordhet. Diskussionen av Anne på Grönkulla utgår från att ett critical literacy-perspektiv kan öppna en kanonisk text och göra den relevant för dagens klassrum. Frågor kring vems perspektiv som inte syns eller hörs i texten och vilka kulturella värden som texten förmedlar kan på ett produktivt sätt kopplas ihop med frågor om adoption för att analysera vilka implicita normer texten uttrycker kring exempelvis familjebildning och den samtida synen på flickor. Genom att sätta Montgomerys text i dialog med en nutida berättelse, Robin Benways Far from the Tree (2017), tydliggörs hur synen på dessa ämnen förändrats – eller inte – över tid.

- This paper begins by arguing that when the concept of girlhood is considered in relation to the presently growing body of memoirs by transnational adoptees, two central tensions emerge. On the one hand, the adoptee authors/protagonists are seen as perpetual children always being spoken for by adoptive parents, social workers, or other adults. On the other hand, the full story of their own girlhood is elusive; haunted by a past that was never to be. The analysis focuses on adoption from South Korea using Lisa Wool-Rim Sjöblom’s graphic novel Palimpsest (2016) as a case in point; reading it in relation to other Swedish, and American memoirs of transnational adoption (Jane Jeong Trenka, Katy Robinson, Soojung Jo, Nicole Chung, Astrid Trotzig, and Sofia French). The coming-of-age theme is strong in these autobiographical narratives: they are not written at the end of a long, eventful life, but at a stage when it is necessary to move back into the past in order to move into the future. Hübinette (2005) notes that Swedish YAL about Korean adoption focuses on adoptive (rather than biological) relationships and promotes a liberal and progressive view of adoption as a form of family-making well suited to the idea of a multicultural society. The memoirs challenge this view, offering a more complex picture. All center on the theme of finding identity and a sense of belonging. By putting her life story into words, the adoptee memoirist writes herself into being, and the journey to South Korea constitutes a rite of passage in which the encounter with the mother (country) enables a reconciliation with the past, and serves as a necessary step on the way to adulthood and motherhood. In addition to investigating the trope of adoption as enabling independence and hybridization (Novy 2001), the paper focuses on representations of an alternative past, and the persistent need to fill in the gaps about one’s childhood, which for many of the writers amount to a yearning for memories that were never formed.

"Måste man verkligen läsa hela boken?" : Är noveller framtiden i engelskklassrummet?

- Studenter läser inte lika mycket som tidigare och studenter från studieovana bakgrunder än mindre (Forskarpodden 2019). De långa litteraturlistor vi kanske minns från vår egen studietid har krympt och månget personalrumssamtal har handlat om att studenterna kommer oförberedda – de har inte läst boken, kanske inte ens köpt den. Om de har läst, har de inte alltid läst klart. Läsandet går långsamt, till skillnad från det de får till sig från andra medier (Persson 2012) och betydelsen av begreppen allmänbildning och bildning har förändrats: ”[d]en kanoniserade kunskapen är inte lika given längre” (Sörlin 2019, s. 129). Vår presentation handlar om hur vi bemött dessa förändringar i våra kurser i engelska inom ämneslärarutbildningen 7–9, och hur vi under de senaste tio åren gått över till att primärt arbeta med noveller i stället för romaner, vilket innebär både mindre och mer läsning för studenterna – novellen ställer inte samma krav på uthållighet i läsningen som romanen, men desto större krav på djup och precision på grund av den densitet den besitter. Vi diskuterar didaktiska vinster och förluster i ett samtal om hur vi arbetat med noveller i klassrummet i litteraturundervisning och i kurser i kreativt skrivande. - Denna presentation fokuserar på förhållandet mellan estetisk form och mottagarens känslor i Ernest Hemingways novell ”Hills Like White Elephants” (1927). Denna korta text använder sig av ett objektivt/dramatiskt berättarperspektiv och består nästan enbart av dialog mellan en man och en kvinna på en järnvägsstation mellan Barcelona och Madrid. I väntan på att tåget till Madrid ska komma sitter de i stationens bar och samtalar om den ”operation” som kvinnan ska genomgå vid resans slut. I den här presentationen belyser vi hur man genom några tolkningsstrategier kan bygga upp läsarens ”attunement” (Felski 2020) gentemot texten—och kanske till och med öppna upp för att läsaren till och med kan uppleva empati (Keen 2007). Som bland andra Maria Nikolajeva noterar verkar det som om att ju mer en läsare får veta om de fiktiva karaktärernas inre liv, desto större är sannolikheten att läsaren faktiskt blir känslomässigt engagerad i en text (81). Vi menar att Hemingways text, vars gestaltande av känslor kännetecknas av en minimalism som ställer stora krav på läsarens förmåga att tolka vad karaktärerna egentligen pratar om, till en början främst skapar en känsla av irritation och frustration hos läsaren. Denna känsla speglas också av textens karaktärer och kan förstås som ett uttryck för brist på agens; en slags ”ugly feeling” beskriven av Sianne Ngai (2007). Klassrumsarbete med denna text bör, föreslår vi, börja med en kort introduktion till kontexten, dvs modernismens typiska stil och stämningar, och därefter fokusera på miljön, speciellt betydelsen av ”tröskeln” (limen) som en plats kännetecknande en övergång från en geografisk och/eller social situation till en annan och där jaget kan destabiliseras och kan omformuleras (Turner 57; Kinsley 48). Vi föreslår även några konkreta klassrumsövningar med fokus på stil och ton för att komma åt textens känslouttryck.

- This paper explores the connection between life writing and kinship in a number of narratives by adoptees from South Korea to the US and Sweden. I propose that these texts are examples of narrative kinning; an exploration and creation of kinship through and between texts. The first aspect of narrative kinning occurs as the memoirs create a discursive space in which alternative modes of identity and kinship are envisioned and embodied. Narrative kinning through text highlights the relational, textual and transnational nature of Korean adoptee identity. The second aspect of the term, narrative kinning between texts, is seen in the similarity of the memoirs’ formal features. Tracing similarities of voice, structure, theme and tone between American and Swedish narratives of transnational/transracial adoption, I consider the Korean adoptee memoir as a genre-in-progress. The dominant discourses of the clean break; predestination; colorblindness, and happiness form a framework within which the two types of narrative kinning occur, and the paper explores how the Korean adoptee memoirs challenge and critique these discourses in significant ways.
