  • The ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3:S08002
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a general-purpose, heavy-ion detector at the CERN LHC which focuses on QCD, the strong-interaction sector of the Standard Model. It is designed to address the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma at extreme values of energy density and temperature in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Besides running with Pb ions, the physics programme includes collisions with lighter ions, lower energy running and dedicated proton-nucleus runs. ALICE will also take data with proton beams at the top LHC energy to collect reference data for the heavy-ion programme and to address several QCD topics for which ALICE is complementary to the other LHC detectors. The ALICE detector has been built by a collaboration including currently over 1000 physicists and engineers from 105 Institutes in 30 countries, Its overall dimensions are 16 x 16 x 26 m(3) with a total weight of approximately 10 000 t. The experiment consists of 18 different detector systems each with its own specific technology choice and design constraints, driven both by the physics requirements and the experimental conditions expected at LHC. The most stringent design constraint is to cope with the extreme particle multiplicity anticipated in central Pb-Pb collisions. The different subsystems were optimized to provide high-momentum resolution as well as excellent Particle Identification (PID) over a broad range in momentum, up to the highest multiplicities predicted for LHC. This will allow for comprehensive studies of hadrons, electrons, muons, and photons produced in the collision of heavy nuclei. Most detector systems are scheduled to be installed and ready for data taking by mid-2008 when the LHC is scheduled to start operation, with the exception of parts of the Photon Spectrometer (PHOS), Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) and Electro Magnetic Calorimeter (EMCal). These detectors will be completed for the high-luminosity ion run expected in 2010. This paper describes in detail the detector components as installed for the first data taking in the summer of 2008.

  • Study of the response of the ATLAS central calorimeter to pions of energies from 3 to 9 GeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 607:2, s. 372-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. in this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to the prediction of a detector simulation program using the toolkit Geant 4. • Time-resolved three-dimensional imaging of the left atrium and pulmonary veins in the interventional suite-A comparison between multisweep gated rotational three-dimensional reconstructed fluoroscopy and multislice computed tomography
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Heart Rhythm. - : Elsevier BV. - 1547-5271. ; 5:4, s. 513-519
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Cardiac computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to visualize left atrial (LA) anatomy for ablation of atrial fibrillation. We have developed a new imaging technique that allows acquisition and visualization of three-dimensional (3D) cardiac images in the catheter lab. Objective: We sought to compare LA and pulmonary vein (PV) dimensions acquired using gated multisweep rotational fluoroscopy (C-arm CT) system and multislice computed tomography (MSCT) in an in vivo porcine model. Methods: A Siemens AXIOM Artis dTA C-arm system (Siemens AG, Medical Solutions) was modified to allow acquisition of four bidirectional sweeps during synchronized acquisition of the electrocardiogram signal to allow retrospective gating. C-arm CT image volumes were then reconstructed. Gated MSCT (SOMATOM Sensation 16 and 64, Siemens AG, Medical Solutions) and C-arm CT images were acquired in six animals. The two main PV diameters were measured in orthogonal axes. LA volumes were calculated. C-arm CT measurements were compared with the MSCT measurements. Results: The average PV diameters using the C-arm CT were 2.24 × 1.35 cm, versus 2.27 × 1.38 cm for CT. The average difference was 0.034 cm (1.9%) between the C-arm CT and standard CT. The average LA volume using MSCT was 49.1 ± 12.7 cm3, as compared with 51.0 ± 8.7 cm3 obtained by the C-arm CT. The average difference between the C-arm CT and the MSCT was 1.9 cm3 (3.7%). There were no significant differences in either the PV or LA measurements. Conclusions: Visualization of 3D cardiac anatomy during ablation procedures is possible and highly accurate. The 3D cardiac reconstructions acquired during ablation procedures will be valuable for procedural planning and guidance. © 2008 Heart Rhythm Society.

  • Determination of KLa, COD fractionations and Heterotrophic yield of palm oil mill effluent (POME)
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Activated sludge models (ASMs) have been widely used as a basis for further model development in wastewater treatment processes. Values for parameters to be used are vital for the accuracy of the modeling approach. A continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), as open respirometer with continuous flow for 20 h is used in ASMs. The dissolved oxygen (DO) profile for 11 days was monitored. It was found the mass transfer coefficient KLa is 0.3 h−1 during lag and start feed phase and 0.01 h−1 during stop feed phase, while the heterotrophic yield coefficient YH is 0.44. Some of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) fractionations of palm oil mill effluent (POME) using respirometric test in ASM models are Ss 50 mg/L, SI 16,600 mg/L, XS 25,550 mg/L, and XI 2,800 mg/L. The comparison of experimental and ASM1 from OUR concentration is found to fit well.

  • Effect of Cold Work Percent on Mechanical Properties of AISI 304L Stainless Steel
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates the effect of various degrees of plastic deformation introduced by cold rolling at zero temperature on the mechanical properties of AISI 304L stainless steel. microstructural and ferromagnetic studies were also conducted. The material was evaluated up to 90% reduction in thickness. For this purpose, magnetic measurements, optical metallography, hardness and Tensile test, were used. Results show that by increasing the amount of rolling strain, transformation of austenite to martensite generally increases. The regime of this increase depends on the amount of the plastic deformation and temperature. The tensile strength and hardness were found to increase with the increase of cold rolling percentage (%CR) up to 90%.The results indicate that the formation of strain-induced martensite evidently led to a significant strengthening of the steel.
