  • The effectiveness of flower strips and hedgerows on pest control, pollination services and crop yield : a quantitative synthesis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Ecology Letters. - : Wiley. - 1461-023X .- 1461-0248. ; 23:10, s. 1488-1498
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Floral plantings are promoted to foster ecological intensification of agriculture through provisioning of ecosystem services. However, a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness of different floral plantings, their characteristics and consequences for crop yield is lacking. Here we quantified the impacts of flower strips and hedgerows on pest control (18 studies) and pollination services (17 studies) in adjacent crops in North America, Europe and New Zealand. Flower strips, but not hedgerows, enhanced pest control services in adjacent fields by 16% on average. However, effects on crop pollination and yield were more variable. Our synthesis identifies several important drivers of variability in effectiveness of plantings: pollination services declined exponentially with distance from plantings, and perennial and older flower strips with higher flowering plant diversity enhanced pollination more effectively. These findings provide promising pathways to optimise floral plantings to more effectively contribute to ecosystem service delivery and ecological intensification of agriculture in the future.

  • Compositional and Interfacial Engineering Yield High-Performance and Stable p-i-n Perovskite Solar Cells and Mini-Modules
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS applied materials & interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 13:11, s. 13022-13033
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through the optimization of the perovskite precursor composition and interfaces to selective contacts, we achieved a p-i-n-type perovskite solar cell (PSC) with a 22.3% power conversion efficiency (PCE). This is a new performance record for a PSC with an absorber bandgap of 1.63 eV. We demonstrate that the high device performance originates from a synergy between (1) an improved perovskite absorber quality when introducing formamidinium chloride (FACl) as an additive in the "triple cation" Cs0.05FA0.79MA0.16PbBr0.51I2.49 (Cs-MAFA) perovskite precursor ink, (2) an increased open-circuit voltage, VOC, due to reduced recombination losses when using a lithium fluoride (LiF) interfacial buffer layer, and (3) high-quality hole-selective contacts with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of [2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz) on ITO electrodes. While all devices exhibit a high performance after fabrication, as determined from current-density voltage, J-V, measurements, substantial differences in device performance become apparent when considering longer-term stability data. A reduced long-term stability of devices with the introduction of a LiF interlayer is compensated for by using FACl as an additive in the metal-halide perovskite thin-film deposition. Optimized devices maintained about 80% of the initial average PCE during maximum power point (MPP) tracking for >700 h. We scaled the optimized device architecture to larger areas and achieved fully laser patterned series-interconnected mini-modules with a PCE of 19.4% for a 2.2 cm2 active area. A robust device architecture and reproducible deposition methods are fundamental for high performance and stable large-area single junction and tandem modules based on PSCs.

  • High land-use intensity in grasslands constrains wild bee species richness in Europe
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Biological Conservation. - : Elsevier BV. - 0006-3207. ; 241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is widespread concern regarding declines in bee populations given their importance for the functioning of both natural and managed ecosystems. An increasing number of studies find negative relations between bee species richness and simplification of agricultural landscapes, but the role of land-use intensity and its relative importance compared to landscape simplification remain less clear. We compared the relative effects of nitrogen inputs, as a proxy for land-use intensity, and proportion of natural and semi-natural habitat, as a measure of landscape complexity on total bee species richness, rare species richness and dominant crop-visiting species richness. We used data from 282 grasslands across five countries, covering the entire range of low intensity, no-input systems, to high-input sites (>400 kg N/ha/year). We found consistent negative impacts of increasing land-use intensity at a regional scale on total bee species richness and dominant crop-visiting species across Europe, but no such effects of landscape complexity. In contrast, the richness of rare bee species was not significantly related to increasing land-use intensity. Nevertheless, based on species accumulation curves, grasslands with no nitrogen inputs had higher total bee richness and higher shares of rare species compared with sites with high nitrogen inputs (>125 kg N/ha/year). Our results highlight the importance of retaining grasslands characterised by low land-use intensity across agricultural landscapes to promote bee diversity.

  • Mirror, mirror on thewall: Exploring ubiquitous artifacts for health tracking
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. ; , s. 148-157
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While fitness trackers are increasingly popular among users, recent studies have shown that the health benefits of wearing a tracker are not apparent. The need to explicitly retrieve data can lead to limited benefits. Understanding how users can access, understand, and reflect on their data can lead to building systems that benefit our wellbeing. In this work, we explore the feasibility of using ubiquitous artifacts for unobtrusive feedback in health tracking. We evaluated a concept based on design dimensions for personal visualization on a smart mirror in a user study. Our design puts emphasis on the temporality of presented data. Participants found the visualizations comprehensive, rating cardiac and inertial data most useful as well as approved the different levels of temporal aggregation. Our work contributes findings on how to represent health-related data with ubiquitous artifacts to increase users' awareness.

  • A multipurpose end-station for atomic, molecular and optical sciences and coherent diffractive imaging at ELI beamlines
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The European Physical Journal Special Topics. - : Springer Nature. - 1951-6355 .- 1951-6401. ; 230:23, s. 4183-4194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the status of a users' end-station, MAC: a Multipurpose station for Atomic, molecular and optical sciences and Coherent diffractive imaging, designed for studies of structure and dynamics of matter in the femtosecond time-domain. MAC is located in the E1 experimental hall on the high harmonic generation (HHG) beamline of the ELI Beamlines facility. The extreme ultraviolet beam from the HHG beamline can be used at the MAC end-station together with a synchronized pump beam (which will cover the NIR/Vis/UV or THz range) for time-resolved experiments on different samples. Sample delivery systems at the MAC end-station include a molecular beam, a source for pure or doped clusters, ultrathin cylindrical or flat liquid jets, and focused beams of substrate-free nanoparticles produced by an electrospray or a gas dynamic virtual nozzle combined with an aerodynamic lens stack. We further present the available detectors: electron/ion time-of-flight and velocity map imaging spectrometers and an X-ray camera, and discuss future upgrades: a magnetic bottle electron spectrometer, production of doped nanodroplets and the planned developments of beam capabilities at the MAC end-station.

  • Evaluation of a Hybrid Capture-Based Pan-Cancer Panel for Analysis of Treatment Stratifying Oncogenic Aberrations and Processes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Diagnostics. - : Elsevier. - 1525-1578 .- 1943-7811. ; 22:6, s. 757-769
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stratification of patients for targeted and immune-based therapies requires extensive genomic profiling that enables sensitive detection of clinically relevant variants and interrogation of biomarkers, such as tumor mutational burden (TMB) and microsatellite instability (MSI). Detection of single and multiple nucleotide variants, copy number variants, MSI, and TMB was evaluated using a commercially available next-generation sequencing panel containing 523 cancer-related genes (1.94 megabases). Analysis of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections and cytologic material from 45 tumor samples showed that all previously known MSI-positive samples (n = 7), amplifications (n = 9), and pathogenic variants (n = 59) could be detected. TMB and MSI scores showed high intralaboratory and interlaboratory reproducibility (eight samples tested in 11 laboratories). For reliable TMB analysis, 20 ng DNA was shown to be sufficient, even for relatively poor-quality samples. A minimum of 20% neoplastic cells was required to minimize variations in TMB values induced by chromosomal instability or tumor heterogeneity. Subsequent analysis of 58 consecutive lung cancer samples in a diagnostic setting was successful and revealed sufficient somatic mutations to generate mutational signatures in 14 cases. In conclusion, the 523-gene assay can be applied for evaluation of multiple DNA-based biomarkers relevant for treatment selection.

  • Genome-wide Association Analysis in Humans Links Nucleotide Metabolism to Leukocyte Telomere Length
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - : CELL PRESS. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 106:3, s. 389-404
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is a heritable biomarker of genomic aging. In this study, we perform a genome-wide meta-analysis of LTL by pooling densely genotyped and imputed association results across large-scale European-descent studies including up to 78,592 individuals. We identify 49 genomic regions at a false dicovery rate (FDR) < 0.05 threshold and prioritize genes at 31, with five highlighting nucleotide metabolism as an important regulator of LTL. We report six genome-wide significant loci in or near SENP7, MOB1B, CARMIL1 , PRRC2A, TERF2, and RFWD3, and our results support recently identified PARP1, POT1, ATM, and MPHOSPH6 loci. Phenome-wide analyses in >350,000 UK Biobank participants suggest that genetically shorter telomere length increases the risk of hypothyroidism and decreases the risk of thyroid cancer, lymphoma, and a range of proliferative conditions. Our results replicate previously reported associations with increased risk of coronary artery disease and lower risk for multiple cancer types. Our findings substantially expand current knowledge on genes that regulate LTL and their impact on human health and disease.

  • The Role of Grain Boundaries on Ionic Defect Migration in Metal Halide Perovskites
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advanced Energy Materials. - : Wiley. - 1614-6832 .- 1614-6840. ; 10:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Halide perovskites are emerging as revolutionary materials for optoelectronics. Their ionic nature and the presence of mobile ionic defects within the crystal structure have a dramatic influence on the operation of thin-film devices such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and transistors. Thin films are often polycrystalline and it is still under debate how grain boundaries affect the migration of ions and corresponding ionic defects. Laser excitation during photoluminescence (PL) microscopy experiments leads to formation and subsequent migration of ionic defects, which affects the dynamics of charge carrier recombination. From the microscopic observation of lateral PL distribution, the change in the distribution of ionic defects over time can be inferred. Resolving the PL dynamics in time and space of single crystals and thin films with different grain sizes thus, provides crucial information about the influence of grain boundaries on the ionic defect movement. In conjunction with experimental observations, atomistic simulations show that defects are trapped at the grain boundaries, thus inhibiting their diffusion. Hence, with this study, a comprehensive picture highlighting a fundamental property of the material is provided while also setting a theoretical framework in which the interaction between grain boundaries and ionic defect migration can be understood.

  • Implementation of precision medicine in healthcare—A European perspective
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 294:4, s. 437-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The technical development of high-throughput sequencing technologies and the parallel development of targeted therapies in the last decade have enabled a transition from traditional medicine to personalized treatment and care. In this way, by using comprehensive genomic testing, more effective treatments with fewer side effects are provided to each patient—that is, precision or personalized medicine (PM). In several European countries—such as in England, France, Denmark, and Spain—the governments have adopted national strategies and taken “top-down” decisions to invest in national infrastructure for PM. In other countries—such as Sweden, Germany, and Italy with regionally organized healthcare systems—the profession has instead taken “bottom-up” initiatives to build competence networks and infrastructure to enable equal access to PM. In this review, we summarize key learnings at the European level on the implementation process to establish sustainable governance and organization for PM at the regional, national, and EU/international levels. We also discuss critical ethical and legal aspects of implementing PM, and the importance of access to real-world data and performing clinical trials for evidence generation, as well as the need for improved reimbursement models, increased cross-disciplinary education and patient involvement. In summary, PM represents a paradigm shift, and modernization of healthcare and all relevant stakeholders—that is, healthcare, academia, policymakers, industry, and patients—must be involved in this system transformation to create a sustainable, non-siloed ecosystem for precision healthcare that benefits our patients and society at large.
