  • A networking laboratory for the developing world
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Magazine. - 0163-6804 .- 1558-1896. ; 42:2, s. 106-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internet-based communication is assuming an increasingly important role in the developing world. It is thus crucial that students be exposed to contemporary networking equipment in a realistic setting, in order to connect theoretical material taught in lecture courses with the realities of physical hardware. To this end, a large computer networking laboratory has been set up to provide a realistic environment for teaching internetworking concepts. This laboratory provides university-level students with a testbed to experiment with fundamental issues of internetworking in a way that cannot be provided by simulators and to a degree of rigor not possible with the commonly available laboratory setups designed for technicians. We describe the motivations for setting up the laboratory, its network structure and equipment, and the type of experiments students conduct. The laboratory structure is influenced heavily by the limited funds-at our disposal - a common problem in the developing world. Many of the problems we faced in setting up our equipment (such as the crucial impact of proper electrical grounding on system performance) are not ordinarily encountered in developed nations. Our experiences are thus likely to be of value to others in the developing world who are contemplating setting up experimental facilities for teaching networking.

  • Diabetes and impaired fasting glycemia in a rural population of Bangladesh
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Care. - : American Diabetes Association. - 1935-5548 .- 0149-5992. ; 26:4, s. 1034-1039
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and impaired fasting glycemia (IFG) in a rural population of Bangladesh. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A cluster sampling of 4,923 subjects >/=20 years old in a rural community were investigated. Fasting plasma glucose, blood pressure, height, weight, and girth of waist and hip were measured. BMI and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were calculated. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol were also estimated. We used the 1997 American Diabetes Association diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: The crude prevalence of type 2 diabetes was 4.3% and IFG was 12.4%. The age-standardized prevalence of type 2 diabetes (95% CI) was 3.8% (3.12-4.49) and IFG was 13.0% (11.76-14.16). The subjects with higher family income had significantly higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes (5.9 vs. 3.5%, P < 0.001) and IFG (15.6 vs. 10.8%, P < 0.001) than those with lower income. Employing logistic regression in different models, we found that wealthy class, family history of diabetes, reduced physical exercise, and increased age, BMI, and WHR were the important predictors of diabetes. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol showed no association with diabetes and IFG. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of diabetes and IFG in the rural population was found to be on the increase compared with the previous reports of Bangladesh and other Asian studies. Older age, higher obesity, higher income, family history of diabetes, and reduced physical activity were proved significant risk factors for diabetes and IFG, whereas plasma lipids showed no association with diabetes and IFG. Further study may address whether diabetes is causally associated with insulin deficiency or insulin resistance.

  • A full-coverage, high-resolution human chromosome 22 genomic microarrayfor clinical and research applications
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 11:25, s. 3221-3229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have constructed the first comprehensive microarray representing a human chromosome for analysis of DNA copy number variation. This chromosome 22 array covers 34.7 Mb, representing 1.1% of the genome, with an average resolution of 75 kb. To demonstrate the utility of the array, we have applied it to profile acral melanoma, dermatofibrosarcoma, DiGeorge syndrome and neurofibromatosis 2. We accurately diagnosed homozygous/heterozygous deletions, amplifications/gains, IGLV/IGLC locus instability, and breakpoints of an imbalanced translocation. We further identified the 14-3-3 eta isoform as a candidate tumor suppressor in glioblastoma. Two significant methodological advances in array construction were also developed and validated. These include a strictly sequence defined, repeat-free, and non-redundant strategy for array preparation. This approach allows an increase in array resolution and analysis of any locus; disregarding common repeats, genomic clone availability and sequence redundancy. In addition, we report that the application of phi29 DNA polymerase is advantageous in microarray preparation. A broad spectrum of issues in medical research and diagnostics can be approached using the array. This well annotated and gene-rich autosome contains numerous uncharacterized disease genes. It is therefore crucial to associate these genes to specific 22q-related conditions and this array will be instrumental towards this goal. Furthermore, comprehensive epigenetic profiling of 22q-located genes and high-resolution analysis of replication timing across the entire chromosome can be studied using our array.

  • A didodecyldimethylammonium bromide ternary system: Characterization of three-phase stable emulsions by optical microscopy
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Surfactants and Detergents. - : Wiley. - 1097-3958 .- 1558-9293. ; 5:4, s. 381-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A preliminary characterization of the didodecyldimethyl ammonium bromide (DDAB)/water (W)/per fluorooctane (PFO) ternary system at 25 degreesC is presented. The gradual addition of water, followed by mixing, to DDAB/PFO mixtures produces very stable emulsions for water contents greater than 20 wt%. On the basis of macroscopic observation, at least four different types of emulsions form up to a water content of around 97 wt%. On the basis of high conductivity values, a water-continuous domain is suggested at all compositions. A second phase diagram, considerably different in phase boundaries, is obtained by adding the PFO oil to DDAB/W samples. This allowed us to ascertain the swelling properties of L-alpha1 and L-alpha2 lamellar phases. Optical microscopy in the presence and in the absence of polarized light revealed the formation of lamellar liquid crystals either as randomly localized islands or as rings surrounding the oil droplets. Vesicles are identified at high water content. The contemporaneous presence of both L-alpha1 and L-alpha2 lamellar phases causes a synergistic effect in the PFO stabilization.
