  • Also darüber lässt sich ja streiten! : Die Analyse von "also" in der Diskussion zu Diskurs- und Modalpartikeln

    • This thesis explores the relationship between the position, function and semantics of the German particle "also" (?so?). Traditionally, "also" is classified as a conjunctional adverb because it can fill the position in front of the finite verb in the German clause, the so-called "Vorfeld" (?pre-field?). In this position, it has a meaning similar to that of a conjunction but a distribution similar to that of an adverb. In other positions, however, the classification of "also" is less certain. This holds especially for "also" in the utterance- and sentence initial position typical of discourse particles but also for the use of "also" in the utterance- and sentence medial position typical of modal particles. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether the position itself has an impact on the actual function of a particle, such as "also". The discussion concentrates on the functions of "also" in utterance-initial and utterance-medial position. The results of the discussion relate to the definitions of the three particle classes mentioned above. The analysis of a corpus of authentic, spoken German shows that the utterance- and sentence initial occurrences of "also" fulfill discourse organizational and discourse segmenting functions and that they can thus be described as discourse particles. In contrast, utterance- and sentence medial occurrences of "also" have an entirely different function: they signal that their host units convey information that belongs to the so-called common ground, which consists of information and assumptions that the interlocutors consider to be shared information. Thus, the position of "also" within the sentence/utterance has indeed an impact on its interpretation. The question then arises, in what way the functions of "also" are related to its meaning. It is argued that a core meaning can be detected in all occurrences of "also". It is suggested that the lexical entry of "also" should only contain this invariant, abstract core meaning since the choice of position may provide the hearer with the necessary cues for determining the function of "also" in the actual context of use. The semantic analysis also questions the genuinely semantic method for testing for word class membership of "also" and other particles, which is based on the tacit assumption that the "Vorfeld"-use of the particle will reveal the purest version of its meaning. I suggest that this test is problematic and does not necessarily reveal the most typical ?meaning? of "also".

  • Nationell kraft och lokal motkraft : En diskursanalys av konflikten kring SwePol Link

    • Facility siting conflicts are increasing in our society. This is a study of a HVDC-link between Blekinge, Sweden and Slupsk, Poland called The SwePol Link. This link has transferred electricity between the two electricity systems since the year 2000 and the decision making process can be described as a struggle between conflicting interests. The aim of this study is to investigate where in the decision making process conflicting interests become visible, and how the actors involved have acted and argued in order to try to influence the process to benefit their respective causes. This aim is further developed through a discourse analysis of the variety of arguments, ideas and conceptions that in different situations of the process construct patterns and statements. The purpose of the discourse analysis is to identify and categorize patterns and statements that are expressed in three chosen practices; the concession practice, the court practice and the practice concerning the debate articles and editorials published in Blekinge Läns Tidning during the period 1996-2000. This practice is referred to as the mass media practice in the study. It is clear that the conflict deepens and that the system-builders and critical actors (including Blekinge Läns Tidning) started to distrust each other and their respective ways of acting during the process. Both supporters and critics used scientific and juridical enrolments in order to try to strengthen their positions in the conflict. Both scientifically and juridically formulated arguments were central patterns in the discourse. This was also the case with technically formulated arguments. These patterns of arguments were mainly expressed through academics, or experts, for or against the system and might thereby be looked upon as rather exclusive ways of arguing in the practices. One exception from this was, for example, when fishers argued against different scientific results on the basis of their experiences. This was, however, not a very successful way of criticizing scientific results. The study shows that there, for example, were conflicts around the meaning of a sustainable energy system, where a central system-builder pattern meets a peripheral systemcritical pattern and both sides held themselves as arguing for a sustainable energy system. Another result of the study is that the discourse varied depending on which practice it was expressed in. It became clear that holistic perspectives regarding a sustainable energy system or the landscape as such became peripheral in all of the “formal” practices, where the decisions regarding the system took place. These types of holistic patterns were mainly articulated in other practices like the mass media.

    • Teaching materials and students with mental retardationFrom a socio-cultural perspective, teaching materials can be regarded as mediating tools for transferring culturally based knowledge, norms, values and traditions. While literature on teaching materials in general is substantial, few investigations have been conducted on teaching materials for students with mental retardation. In this paper I will present parts of an ongoing project in which this issue is focused. The study includes about twenty students in two training school classes and one class for students with mild mental retardation, covering the grades 7 10 in the compulsory school.Teaching materials in this study are defined as cultural tools used in education and serving a pedagogical function in programs for students with mental retardation (särskolan). My preliminary findings indicate predominance for everyday skills in teaching material activities. Reading or mathematical development in teaching material activities are of low priority. The activities often imply dilemmas the teacher have to master.

    • PURPOSE To present long-term ocular complications and electroretinographic (ERG) findings in children with long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD) deficiency - a life-threatening metabolic disease - and the relation to age at diagnosis, treatment and other clinical parameters. METHODS Ten children with LCHAD deficiency underwent repeated ophthalmological evaluations including ERG. RESULTS All 10 children developed chorioretinal pathology. Regardless of age at diagnosis, initiation of treatment and age at examination, inter-individual differences were present. Profound chorioretinal atrophy, severe visual impairment and progressive myopia had developed in two teenagers. Milder chorioretinopathy with or without subnormal visual acuity was present in all other children. ERG was pathological in seven children. The chorioretinopathy often started in the peripapillary or perimacular areas. In one patient, unilateral visual impairment was associated with fibrosis. CONCLUSION Early diagnosis and adequate therapy might delay but not prevent the progression of retinal complications. Late diagnosis with severe symptoms at diagnosis, neonatal hypoglycaemia and frequent decompensations may increase the progression rate of the chorioretinopathy. LCHAD deficiency, a potentially lethal disease, is sometimes difficult to diagnose. Unusual chorioretinal findings should alert the ophthalmologist to the long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, especially if there is a history of neonatal hypoglycaemia or failure to thrive.
