  • The temporal evolution of proactiveness in family firms: the horizontal s-curve hypothesis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Family Business Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0894-4865 .- 1741-6248. ; 27:1, s. 35-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We extend prior work on proactiveness in family firms by examining the relationship between firm age and proactiveness. Specifically, we propose an S-shaped effect of aging of family firms on proactiveness. Additionally, we provide a contingency perspective by considering the moderating role of the dispersion of managerial control among family members. Using a sample of Swiss family firms, we find that proactiveness first declines, then increases, and finally decreases again as the family firm ages, and that this relationship is steeper when the managerial control is dispersed among multiple family members.

  • Surviving under water : Physiological limitations and technical possibilities
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The survival of humans in underwater environments necessitates a comprehensive understanding of both physiological factors and advanced technologies. Diving with self-contained underwater breathing apparatuses (SCUBA) remains one of the most common ways for human underwater activities. This thesis explores the challenges of surviving underwater by investigating diving equipment performance and human physiological modeling from both a deterministic and statistical perspective. The research examines the change of gas composition when storing nitrox gas in a composite gas cylinder over extended periods, up to one year. This analysis aims to better understand the implications of long-term storage on gas properties and safety. The efficacy of a signal analysis software algorithm designed to ascertain the accuracy of electronic rebreather oxygen sensors is evaluated. The algorithm's purpose is to provide enhanced safety measures for oxygen sensors integrated into various closed-circuit rebreathers, pursuing reliable data. The reliability of temperature monitoring of carbon dioxide scrubbers is investigated as a method to predict remaining carbon dioxide absorption capacity. This temperature monitoring acts as a crucial "fuel gauge," contributing to diver safety by preventing potential risks associated with scrubber material depletion. The research seeks to explore the principles and methodologies that can be employed to optimize the decompression algorithm, with the purpose of enhancing diver safety during decompression procedures. By employing probabilistic modeling techniques, the research aims to propose innovative solutions to minimize the risk of decompression sickness, contributing to advancements in underwater safety practices.Additionally, the thesis explores the possibilities of altering the oxygen breathing regimen for the Inside Attendant during long-duration hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to facilitate rapid decompression without compromising safety.

  • High-rate biogas production from waste textiles using a two-stage process
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Renewable energy. - : Pergamon. - 0960-1481 .- 1879-0682. ; 52, s. 128-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The efficacy of a two-stage Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR), modified as Stirred Batch Reactor (SBR), and Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Bed (UASB) process in producing biogas from waste textiles was investigated under batch and semi-continuous conditions. Single-stage and two-stage digestions were compared in batch reactors, where 20 g/L cellulose loading, as either viscose/polyester or cotton/polyester textiles, was used. The results disclosed that the total gas production from viscose/polyester in a two-stage process was comparable to the production in a single-stage SBR, and in less than two weeks, more than 80% of the theoretical yield of methane was acquired. However, for cotton/polyester, the two-stage batch process was significantly superior to the single-stage; the maximum rate of methane production was increased to 80%, and the lag phase decreased from 15 days to 4 days. In the two-stage semi-continuous process, where the substrate consisted of jeans textiles, the effect of N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) pretreatment was studied. In this experiment, digestion of untreated and NMMO-treated jeans textiles resulted in 200 and 400 ml (respectively) methane/g volatile solids/day (ml/g VS/day), with an organic loading rate (OLR) of 2 g VS/L reactor volume/day (g VS/L/day); under these conditions, the NMMO pretreatment doubled the biogas yield, a significant improvement. The OLR could successfully be increased to 2.7 g VS/L/day, but at a loading rate of 4 g VS/L/day, the rate of methane production declined. By arranging a serial interconnection of the two reactors and their liquids in the two-stage process, a closed system was obtained that converted waste textiles into biogas.

  • A perspective on path dependence processes : The role of knowledge integration in business model persistence dynamics in the provincial press in England
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Media Business Studies. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1652-2354 .- 2376-2977. ; 13:1, s. 22-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines why strategy innovation is rare in the regional news industry. It integrates the knowledge-based view of a firm, path-dependence theoretical perspective and the field of business model studies to interpret the historic emergence, formation, and current lock-in of legacy regional newspapers. The historic case of the provincial press in England is analysed to consider how, in an industrial context of relative simplicity and certainty, path-dependent formation processes are led by knowledge integration mechanisms.
