  • Organizational challenges and leaders' coping strategies : a qualitative study of Swedish military staff organization
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Military Studies. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 2242-3524 .- 1799-3350. ; 9:1, s. 24-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Numerous societal change processes such as globalization, professionalization and social and technical acceleration have challenged military organizations. The aims of this study were to (1) gain a deeper understanding of coping strategies used by the military leaders at the strategic level to manage everyday organizational demands and (2) relate these strategies to multidisciplinary models of organizational challenges. Owing to an insufficiently developed base of research, an inductive approach was used. Interviews were performed with 23 Swedish brigadier generals and colonels. Five coping strategies were found for handling the negative organizational aspects: repair work, catching up, reproducing, using formal and informal strategies and managing loyalties. The theoretical concepts of narcissistic, anorectic and greedy organizations were used as a framework when interpreting the inductively generated coping strategies. It was suggested that the specific connection found between individual-level coping strategies and theoretically framed organizational challenges is new. The results of this study are discussed theoretically and may be valuable in educational settings when evaluating the working conditions and performance of high-level officers.

  • Smooth power : identifying high-level leadership skills promoting organizational adaptability
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Organization Theory and Behavior. - 1093-4537 .- 1532-4273. ; 23:4, s. 297-313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe study aims to gain a deeper understanding of what leadership skills are important for leaders in gaining adaptability in a hierarchical organization along with antecedent factors that influence the potential development of these skill sets.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative study was conducted by interviewing fifteen high-level military officers (Brigadiers and Colonels). Data were analyzed according to the grounded theory method and a theoretical model was generated.FindingsA core variable was identified in the data analysis, the leader's use of organizational smooth power, using structural, emotional and relational smoothness, to gain organizational adaptability. The leader's professional background, experience and the organizational environment characteristics respectively interact as antecedent variables shaping the leader's contextual appraisal in order to implement smooth power. Further research suggestions are pointed out and practical and ethical implications are included.Research limitations/implicationsThe study was completed in a specific context, a higher-level military staff, which makes it context specific. We hypothesize that similar behaviors may be found in other organizations but further research should be conducted to test this. The sample size is relatively small due to the chosen qualitative research method.Practical implicationsPractical considerations should be given to ethical and moral reflection within leadership training for ongoing use in leadership praxis, such as implementation and ongoing reflection of ethical leadership (Treviño et al., 2000; Treviño et al., 2003). Other practical impacts of this research may be for selection and retention efforts of high-level military staff workers. The model may also be useful for education purposes in order to increase awareness and abilities of smooth power concepts in an attempt to increase adaptability in military leadership. It may increase their awareness of skills rendered as necessary for collaborative efforts in multinational staff environments.Originality/valueThe research contribution is the detailed descriptions of the ways high-level leaders use organizational smooth power in order gain organizational adaptability.

  • A Gender Perspective on Temporary Organisations in Crisis Management
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 28:4, s. 273-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to examine, explain and interpret concepts of gender in relation to information management, crisis communication and collaboration within the framework of (crisis) communicator tasks. Since the crisis management realm is malecoded and the communications profession is female-coded, there is reason to gain more knowledge of how these relate to each other. The ambition is to contribute to an underdeveloped area of theory. A total of nineteen participants joined the study. All the interviews were processed according to the guidelines for the thematic analysis method. Analysis showed that three themes are central to understanding the role of communicators in the crisis management system. These are a) crisis communication as a temporary organization; b) requirements imposed on, and expectations from, the role and the individual and c) organizational greed. Results are discussed theoretically from a gender perspective, and practical implications are given as well as proposals for further studies.

  • Blaming and shaming in the shadow structure : individual resistance towards genderequality work as expressions of social conflict
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Feminist Media Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0777 .- 1471-5902. ; 23:1, s. 83-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores individual resistance related to a military organization’s gender equality work as expressed in online contexts. Resistance is explained as expressions of wider social conflicts, grounded in experiences of threats towards military masculinities, challenged by societal and political transformation processes perceived as feminine. The data consists of defence-related blogs and comments. A thematic analysis finds that individual resistance can be understood as blaming and shaming strategies. Five sub-themes are identified: blaming the “feminised” organization, blaming and shaming women’s abilities to serve, individualisation of structural problems, verbal violence and violations, and objectification of men working with and supporting gender equality initiatives. The analysis exemplifies how social conflict is transferred to organizations through individual resistance. As gender equality policies are questioned, organizations need to confront resistance also within the online context.

  • Covid-19 som en strukturell beslutsutmaning i vård- och omsorgssektorn
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - 0037-833X. ; 98:1, s. 82-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • External, non-governmental resistance in relation to interstate war : an analytical framework
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Security. - 0966-2839 .- 1746-1545. ; 33:2, s. 196-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Russian war against Ukraine in February 2022, unleashed an unprecedented wave of non-governmental, external resistance directed against Russia. In many ways, previous literature on war and resistance does not capture the characteristics of this phenomenon. Besides noting the presence of civilian war protests outside of the warzone, most research has focused on internal resistance during war. In this article, we draw on a wider array of resistance literature and present an analytical framework that allows us to capture the broad elements of non-governmental, external resistance during war – including the power-resistance nexus at work. The analytical framework sorts the various kinds of resisters, it categorises the form of resistance and the targets pursued. The usefulness of the analytical framework is demonstrated through an exploration of empirical examples and illustrations drawn from media reports gathered during the first 10 days of the war in Ukraine. It is concluded that new analytical tools are necessary in order to capture non-governmental, external resistance during war as it is waged in Europe in the 2020s.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
