  • Physicians perceptions of possibilities and obstacles prior to implementing a computerised drug prescribing support system
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International journal of health care quality assurance incorporating leadership in helath services. - : Emerald. - 1366-0756 .- 2051-3135. ; 17:4, s. 173-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seeks to identify physicians' perceptions of possibilities and obstacles prior to implementing a computerised drug prescribing support system. Details a descriptive, qualitative study, with semi-structured individual interviews of 21 physicians in the Accident and Emergency Department of South Stockholm General Hospital. Identifies four descriptive categories for possibilities and obstacles. Concludes that gaining access to patient drug history enables physicians to carry out work in a professional way – a need the computerised prescription support system was not developed for and thus cannot fulfil. Alerts and producer-independent drug information are valuable in reducing workload. However, technical prerequisites form the base for a successful implementation. Time must be given to adapt to new ways of working.

  • The effects of heavy resistance training and detraining on satellite cells in human skeletal muscles
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physiology. - : Wiley. - 0022-3751 .- 1469-7793. ; 558:Pt 3, s. 1005-1012
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate the modulation of satellite cell content and myonuclear number following 30 and 90 days of resistance training and 3, 10, 30, 60 and 90 days of detraining. Muscle biopsies were obtained from the vastus lateralis of 15 young men (mean age: 24 years; range: 20-32 years). Satellite cells and myonuclei were studied on muscle cross-sections stained with a monoclonal antibody against CD56 and counterstained with Mayer's haematoxylin. Cell cycle markers CyclinD1 and p21 mRNA levels were determined by Northern blotting. Satellite cell content increased by 19% (P= 0.02) at 30 days and by 31% (P= 0.0003) at 90 days of training. Compared to pre-training values, the number of satellite cells remained significantly elevated at 3, 10 and 60 days but not at 90 days of detraining. The two cell cycle markers CyclinD1 and p21 mRNA significantly increased at 30 days of training. At 90 days of training, p21 was still elevated whereas CyclinD1 returned to pre-training values. In the detraining period, p21 and CyclinD1 levels were similar to the pre-training values. There were no significant alterations in the number of myonuclei following the training and the detraining periods. The fibre area controlled by each myonucleus gradually increased throughout the training period and returned to pre-training values during detraining. In conclusion, these results demonstrate the high plasticity of satellite cells in response to training and detraining stimuli and clearly show that moderate changes in the size of skeletal muscle fibres can be achieved without the addition of new myonuclei.

  • The arthropod community of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) canopies in Norway
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Entomologica Fennica. - 0785-8760. ; 15:2, s. 65-90
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We summarise the findings of arthropods collected by fogging the canopy of 24 pine trees in two sites in Eastern and Western Norway. From the samples, taken in 1998 and in 1999, almost 30,000 specimens were determined to 512 species, with Diptera being most species rich (210 species), followed by Coleoptera (76 species) and Araneae (49 species). Of the 96 new species records, nine were new to science (5 Diptera and 4 Oribatida), two were new to the European, three to the Scandinavian and 82 to the Norwegian faunas. The paper demonstrates the need for detailed faunistical inventories of European forests.

  • Sodium beacon wavefront sensing for the Euro50 telescope in the presence of perspective elongation
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the SPIE. - : SPIE. - 0819452998 ; 5382, s. 510-519
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To obtain full sky coverage, astronomical adaptive optics systemsrequire Na Sodium Beacons (SBs) (also referred to as Laser Guide Starsor LGSs) located at heights extending from 85 to 100 km. When viewed atthe edge of large telescopes these SBs appear elongated. For the Euro5050 meter aperture telecopes this elongation amounts to 6 to 9 arcsecondswhen the laser is launched from a point on the telescope axis. This issubstantially larger than the -0.6 arcsec FWHM SB when viewed near thetelescope center. This so-called "perspective elongation" substantiallydecreases the sensitivity of SB aided adaptive optics. We describe a wayof removing this elongation when using pulsed lasers. It uses rapid(microsecond) refocusing of the telescope with the aid of birefringentlenses and polarization modulators. We present an outline of the SBwavefront sensor for the Euro50.

  • High resolution deletion analysis of constitutional DNA from neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) patients using microarray-CGH
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - Oxford, United Kingdom : Oxford University Press. - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 1, s. 271-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominant disorder whose hallmark is bilateral vestibular schwannoma. It displays a pronounced clinical heterogeneity with mild to severe forms. The NF2 tumor suppressor (merlin/schwannomin) has been cloned and extensively analyzed for mutations in patients with different clinical variants of the disease. Correlation between the type of the NF2 gene mutation and the patient phenotype has been suggested to exist. However, several independent studies have shown that a fraction of NF2 patients with various phenotypes have constitutional deletions that partly or entirely remove one copy of the NF2 gene. The purpose of this study was to examine a 7 Mb interval in the vicinity of the NF2 gene in a large series of NF2 patients in order to determine the frequency and extent of deletions. A total of 116 NF2 patients were analyzed using high-resolution array-comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) on an array covering at least 90% of this region of 22q around the NF2 locus. Deletions, which remove one copy of the entire gene or are predicted to truncate the schwannomin protein, were detected in 8 severe, 10 moderate and 6 mild patients. This result does not support the correlation between the type of mutation affecting the NF2 gene and the disease phenotype. This work also demonstrates the general usefulness of the array-CON methodology for rapid and comprehensive detection of small (down to 40 kb) heterozygous and/or homozygous deletions occurring in constitutional or tumor-derived DNA.

  • GRB 030227 : The first multiwavelength afterglow of an INTEGRAL GRB
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Astronomy & Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 411:1, s. 315-319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present multiwavelength observations of a gamma-ray burst detected byINTEGRAL (GRB 030227) between 5.3 hours and ~ 1.7days after the event. Here we report the discovery of a dim opticalafterglow (OA) that would not have been detected by many previoussearches due to its faintess (R ~ 23). This OA was seen to declinefollowing a power law decay with index alpha R = -0.95 +/-0.16. The spectral index beta_ opt/NIR yielded -1.25 +/- 0.14. Thesevalues may be explained by a relativistic expansion of a fireball (withp = 2.0) in the cooling regime. We also find evidence for inverseCompton scattering in X-rays.Based on observations with INTEGRAL, an ESA project with instruments andscience data centre funded by ESA member states (especially the PIcountries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain), CzechRepublic and Poland, and with the participation of Russia and the USA.Also partially based on observations collected by the Gamma-Ray BurstCollaboration at ESO (GRACE) at the European Southern Observatory, Chile(ESO Large Programme 165.H-0464).
