  • Study of the response of the ATLAS central calorimeter to pions of energies from 3 to 9 GeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 607:2, s. 372-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. in this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to the prediction of a detector simulation program using the toolkit Geant 4. • Ectopic expression of PAX5 promotes maintenance of biphenotypic myeloid progenitors coexpressing myeloid and B-cell lineage-associated genes
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 0006-4971 .- 1528-0020. ; 109:9, s. 3697-3705
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transcription factor PAX5 is a critical regulator of B-cell commitment and development. Although normally not expressed in myeloid progenitors, PAX5 has recently been shown to be frequently expressed in myeloid malignancies and to suppress expression of myeloid differentiation genes, compatible with an effect on the differentiation or maintenance of myeloid progenitors. However, previous studies in which PAX5 was ectopically expressed in normal myeloid progenitors in vivo and in vitro provided conflicting results as to the effect of PAX5 on myeloid development. Herein, we demonstrate that on ectopic expression of PAX5 in bone marrow multipotent stem/progenitor cells, cells with a biphenotypic B220+GR-1/MAC-1+ phenotype are produced. These remain cytokine-dependent, but unlike control-transduced cells they sustain long-term generation of myeloid progenitors in vitro and remain capable of myeloid differentiation. Notably, PAX5+B220+GR-1/MAC- 1+ myeloid progenitors coexpress, at the single-cell level, myeloid genes and otherwise B-cell-specific PAX5 target genes. These findings establish that ectopic expression of PAX5 introduces extensive self-renewal properties in otherwise short-lived myeloid progenitors. Along with the established ectopic expression of PAX5 in acute myeloid leukemia, this motivates a careful investigation of the potential involvement of ectopic PAX5 expression in myeloid and biphenotypic leukemias. © 2007 by The American Society of Hematology.

  • A Unified Approach to Semi-Autonomous Control of Passenger Vehicles in Hazard Avoidance Scenarios
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IEEE 2009 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, SMC 2009, VOLS 1-9. - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE Press. - 9781424427932 ; , s. 2032-2037
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the design of unified active safety framework that combines trajectory planning, threat assessment, and semi-autonomous control of passenger vehicles into a single constrained-optimal-control-based system. This framework allows for multiple actuation modes, diverse trajectory-planning objectives, and varying levels of autonomy. The vehicle navigation problem is formulated as a constrained optimal control problem with constraints bounding a navigable region of the road surface. A model predictive controller iteratively plans the best-case vehicle trajectory through this constrained corridor. The framework then uses this trajectory to assess the threat posed to the vehicle and intervenes in proportion to this threat. This approach minimizes controller intervention while ensuring that the vehicle does not depart from a navigable corridor of travel. Simulated results are presented here to demonstrate the framework's ability to incorporate multiple threat thresholds and configurable intervention laws while sharing control with a human driver. ©2009 IEEE.

  • Business values of electronic records management in SMEs
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 3rd European Conference on Information Management and Evaluation. - UK : Academic Conferences Limited. - 9781906638443 - 9781906638436 ; , s. 51-58
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Electronic records management in Small and Medium Enterprises is a relatively new research area. It is difficult to find much on the SME and electronic record management in academic databases. In public organizations and in large enterprises the management of electronic records is now acknowledged as important for business support. Efficient records management is e.g. necessary for fulfilling requirements found in various legislation such as e.g. the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). The requirements for documentation in the ISO 9000, and the ISO 14000 series can be fulfilled if standards for records management are used. This paper aims to contribute further knowledge on the quality of records management in SMEs. The following research question has guided this research: How well do SMEs meet minimum ISO 15489 requirements for records management? The research has been carried out within a EU funded research program, where 4 SMEs from both Sweden and Finland have been studied using a qualitative research approach. The data have been collected from four SMEs through interviews. The analytical lens used in this research has been the international standard for Information and Documentation - Record Management: ISO 15489.The results show that electronic records are managed in a rather ad-hoc manner and that management is very dependent upon individuals, many of whom have little, if any, expertise or training in this area and no access to expert advice. One of the identified business values of well-managed electronic records is that the SME gains the opportunity to manage and benefit from their explicit knowledge and experience. This research shows that there are major obstacles to overcome before SMEs are able to fully adopt best practice in electronic records management. Many of these hindrances have their roots in a lack of appropriate strategies for records appraisal and that the SMEs have not followed the steps recommended in the ISO 15489 standard.

  • Clinical effects of endothelin receptor antagonism with bosentan in patients with severe chronic heart failure: results of a pilot study
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of cardiac failure. - : Elsevier BV. - 1071-9164. ; 11:1, s. 12-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Endothelin receptor antagonism produces favorable short-term hemodynamic effects in heart failure, but the clinical effects of longer term therapy have not been evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three hundred and seventy patients with symptoms of heart failure at rest or on minimal exertion and a left ventricular ejection fraction <35% were randomly assigned (double-blind) to placebo (n = 126) or the endothelin receptor antagonist bosentan, titrated slowly (n = 121) or rapidly (n = 123) to a target dose of 500 mg twice daily. Treatment with the study drug was to be maintained for 26 weeks, whereas background medications for heart failure were kept constant. Safety concerns led to early termination of the trial when only 174 patients had had an opportunity to complete 26 weeks of therapy. Bosentan exerted no apparent benefit when all randomized patients were analyzed (P = .709). However, in the first 174 patients who were recruited at least 26 weeks before study termination and who could therefore be followed for the planned duration of the trial, patients in the bosentan groups were more likely to be improved (26% versus 19%) and were less likely to be worse (28% versus 43%), P = .045. When compared with placebo-treated patients, bosentan-treated patients had a increased risk of heart failure during the first month of treatment but a decreased risk of heart failure during the fourth, fifth, and sixth months of therapy. The major noncardiac adverse effects of bosentan included an increase in hepatic transaminases (in 15.6% of patients) and a decrease in hemoglobin (of about 1 g/L). CONCLUSION: Although bosentan exerted no favorable effects in the overall study, our findings suggest that the clinical responses to endothelin antagonism with bosentan in patients with severe chronic heart failure may be dependent on the duration of treatment.

  • The  role of information systems in information management : Exploring the challenges in information sharing
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IADIS International Conference on ICT, Society and Human Beings. - : IADIS. - 9789728924829
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information systems may be used for several purposes in an organization. They are often the basis of operations and activities. For example, information systems and technologies can be an integrated part of the production process. Information systems have also an important role in management and development of the organization. Here information, its management and sharing throughout the company have a decisive role. It may still be argued that in many cases information systems are not used in the best possible way. For example, a lot of information remains personal property even though it might be valuable when shared with colleagues. In this paper we look at the role and use of information systems in information sharing. The paper explores the challenges in sharing of information and knowledge. Technology can be used here, especially if the information can be expressed in written format. When information is more tacit, complex and based on expertise also personal interaction is important in information sharing.

  • The genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 1095-9203 .- 0036-8075. ; 314:5801, s. 941-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the sequence and analysis of the 814-megabase genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, a model for developmental and systems biology. The sequencing strategy combined whole-genome shotgun and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) sequences. This use of BAC clones, aided by a pooling strategy, overcame difficulties associated with high heterozygosity of the genome. The genome encodes about 23,300 genes, including many previously thought to be vertebrate innovations or known only outside the deuterostomes. This echinoderm genome provides an evolutionary outgroup for the chordates and yields insights into the evolution of deuterostomes.

  • How a Medium Sized Enterprise Applies the CRM Approach in its Marketing
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 3rd European Conference on Information Management and Evaluation. - : Academic Conferences Limited. - 9781906638443 - 9781906638436 ; , s. 448-459
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose is to describe how a medium sized enterprise with an international scope, positive economic development, and relatively high ICT maturity applies the CRM approach in its marketing. Medium sized enterprises with these features are assumed to be role models for smaller enterprises, and in particular for smaller enterprises with growth ambitions. This case study is based on structured interviews conducted with the CEO and the manager responsible for IT and IS development in the enterprise. The findings show that the enterprise endorses a customer-oriented business strategy, supported by fairly simple information gathering and analysing methods; that the dependency on agents and dealers is a problem in an CRM perspective; and that the development of the Web offers new possibilities for CRM practices and policies.
