Food traceability as an integral part of logistics management in food and agricultural supply chain

- The contemporary food supply chain (FSC) should adequately provide information that consumers and other concerned bodies need to know such as variety of the food attributes, country of origin, animal welfare, and genetic engineering related issues. For this, effective food traceability system (FTS) is important. The objective of this study was to conduct a comprehensive literature review on food traceability issues. About 74 studies, mainly focusing on food traceability issues and published during 2000–2013, were reviewed. Based on the review results, the definition, driving forces, barriers in developing and implementing FTSs, benefits, traceability technologies, improvements, and performances of FTSs have been identified and discussed. Considering FTS as an integral part of logistics management, new conceptual definition of FTS has been provided. This review has pointed out that the issue of developing effective and full chain FTS is quite complex in nature as it requires a deeper understanding of real processes from different perspectives such as economic, legal, technological, and social issues. Therefore, future researches (recommended here) on traceability should focus on: integration of traceability activities with food logistics activities; technological aspects of FTSs; the linkage between traceability system and food production units; standardization of data capturing and information exchange; awareness creation strategies; continuity of information flow and effective communication of traceability information to consumers and other stakeholders; the linkage between different drivers of FTS; improvement strategies of FTS; and development of performance evaluation frameworks for FTSs.

Wild rodents as carriers of potential pathogens to pigs, chickens and humans : with special emphasis on Brachyspira spp. and Yersinia enterocolitica

- The aim of this thesis was to investigate the specific risks that rodents constitute for proliferation of pathogens and transmission of those to farm animals, and indirectly to humans. Rodents were captured in pig and chicken flocks, in wastewater treatment plants and other urban environments. The enteric pig pathogens Brachyspira hyodysenteriae and B. pilosicoli and the chicken pathogen B. intermedia were detected. Fingerprinting by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA and Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis indicated cross-species transmission of B. pilosicoli, B. intermedia, B. innocens, and B. murdochii between rodents and farm animals. A phylogeny of murine brachyspiras was established. Three new genetic rodent variants of Brachyspira spp. were discovered, for which the provisional names ‘B. rattus’, ‘B. muridarum’ and ‘B. muris’ were suggested. Lawsonia intracellularis and encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) were detected in rodents trapped on pig farms. The clinical significance of leptospirosis in Sweden is reportedly minor. However, the detection of pathogenic leptospiras in mice, rats and a water vole indicated that rodents constitute a potential hazard to pigs and humans. Campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis and yersiniosis are the most frequently reported zoonosis in Europe. Rodents in the study carried C. jejuni, C. coli and C. upsaliensis. Identical isolates of the human pathogen Yersinia enterocolitica bioserotype 4/O:3 were isolated both from rodents and pigs on the same farm, indicating cross-species transmission. Salmonella enterica could not be detected by the applied real-time PCR, indicating a low sensitivity of this test. No zoonotic variants of Giardia spp. or Cryptosporidium spp. were detected. All samples were tested negative for Trichinella spp. indicating that trichinellosis is not a widespread infection in wild rodents in Sweden. No rodents were seropositive to Toxoplasma gondii. In conclusion, the results show that rodents could be a risk for the transmission of the pig pathogens Lawsonia intracellularis, Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, B. pilosicoli, pathogenic Leptospira spp. and EMCV, and zoonotic Campylobacter species and Yersinia enterocolitica 4/O:3 in Sweden.

- One of the major challenges facing the medicine today is developing new therapies that enhance human health. To help address these challenges the utilization of analytical technologies and high-throughput automated platforms has been employed; in order to perform more experiments in a shorter time frame with increased data quality. In the last decade various analytical strategies have been established to enhance separation speed and efficiency in liquid chromatography applications. Liquid chromatography is an increasingly important tool for monitoring drugs and their metabolites. Furthermore, liquid chromatography has played an important role in pharmacokinetics and metabolism studies at these drug development stages since its introduction. This paper provides an overview of current trends in fast chromatography for the analysis of cardiovascular drugs and their metabolites in clinical applications. Current trends in fast liquid chromatographic separations involve monolith technologies, fused-core columns, high-temperature liquid chromatography (HTLC) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC). The high specificity in combination with high sensitivity makes it an attractive complementary method to traditional methodology used for routine applications. The practical aspects of, recent developments in and the present status of fast chromatography for the analysis of biological fluids for therapeutic drug and metabolite monitoring, pharmacokinetic studies and bioequivalence studies are presented.

Why don't all victims tell teachers about being bullied? A mixed methods study on how direct and indirect bullying and student-teacher relationship quality are linked with bullying disclosure

- The study aimed to explore bullying disclosures to teachers from the victims’ point of view, with a special focus on the influence of direct and indirect bullying and student-teacher relationship quality. A sequential explanatory mixed methods design was adopted. First, 190 students with bullying experience completed a questionnaire. Second, 20 students were interviewed. One of several of the findings revealed that students were more inclined to tell a teacher about victimization when bullying was indirect. Bullying and how teachers managed it had an impact on the quality of the student-teacher relationship, but not solely dependent on whether the bullying ended.
