  • Sequence and comparative analysis of the chicken genome provide unique perspectives on vertebrate evolution
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 432:7018, s. 695-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present here a draft genome sequence of the red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus. Because the chicken is a modern descendant of the dinosaurs and the first non-mammalian amniote to have its genome sequenced, the draft sequence of its genome--composed of approximately one billion base pairs of sequence and an estimated 20,000-23,000 genes--provides a new perspective on vertebrate genome evolution, while also improving the annotation of mammalian genomes. For example, the evolutionary distance between chicken and human provides high specificity in detecting functional elements, both non-coding and coding. Notably, many conserved non-coding sequences are far from genes and cannot be assigned to defined functional classes. In coding regions the evolutionary dynamics of protein domains and orthologous groups illustrate processes that distinguish the lineages leading to birds and mammals. The distinctive properties of avian microchromosomes, together with the inferred patterns of conserved synteny, provide additional insights into vertebrate chromosome architecture.

  • The Odin satellite - I. Radiometer design and test
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 402:3, s. L27-L34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Sub-millimetre and Millimetre Radiometer (SMR) is the main instrument on the Swedish, Canadian, Finnish and French spacecraft Odin. It consists of a 1.1 metre diameter telescope with four tuneable heterodyne receivers covering the ranges 486-504 GHz and 541-581 GHz, and one fixed at 118.75 GHz together with backends that provide spectral resolution from 150 kHz to 1 MHz. This Letter describes the Odin radiometer, its operation and performance with the data processing and calibration described in Paper II.

  • Experimental INvestigation of radiative decay rates of metastable levels in Eu II
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949. ; 64, s. 237-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The radiative lifetimes of the metastable a 9DJ (J = 2-5) levels in Eu II have been measured by laser probing of a stored ion beam. The lifetimes of all four J levels are slightly above 1 s. A deviation from the expected energy dependence of the decay rates for electric quadrupole transitions is observed and discussed.

  • Isolation, characterization, and enzymatic hydrolysis of acetyl-galactoglucomannan from spruce (Picea abies)
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Hemicelluloses. Science and Technology (ACS Symposium Series). - 0097-6156. - 9780841238428 - 0841238421 ; 864, s. 66-78
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Water-soluble hemicelluloses were extracted from spruce chips by heat-fractionation using microwave treatment. A screening of conditions (pH, temperature and residence time) was performed for the extraction of O-acetyl-galactoglucomannan (AcGGM). The yield and the average molecular weight of the extracted mannan were analysed using HPLC, size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and mass-spectrometry. The pH during heat fractionation influenced the yield and the structure of AcGGM. The highest yield (78%) of AcGGM (average molecular weight 3800) was achieved with heat-fractionation in water at 190degrees C for 5 minutes. With 0.025% NaOH, an average molecular weight of 9500 was obtained at a yield of 30%. AcGGM molecular weight standard molecules were prepared using SEC. The structure of the AcGGM was determined using H-1-NMR. The enzymatic hydrolysis of AcGGM was studied using beta-mannanase and alpha-galactosidase.

  • Processing and characterization of a position sensitive lateral-effect metal oxide semiconductor detector
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 531:1-2, s. 140-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Position sensingdetectors (PSDs) are useful in many applications, such as vibration, displacement, and triangulation measurements. In this paper we present a lateral-effect metal oxide semiconductor PSD with switchingcapability fabricated by our group. The detector can be switched off by the application of 0V on the substrate and 0.2V on the gate. A linear current-position behaviour is exhibited by the detector at a substrate bias of both 5 and 10V with the gate at 0V. There is no effect on the linearity when the substrate voltage is changed from 5 to 10V. The non-linearity is within 0.2% at a distance of 71.5mm from origin for 5, 10 and 15mm device length.

  • Reduced sympathetic responsiveness as well as plasma and tissue noradrenaline concentration in growth hormone transgenic mice
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Acta Physiol Scand. - 0001-6772. ; 182:4, s. 369-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS: Acromegaly [overproduction of growth hormone (GH)] and GH deficiency have both been associated with alterations in autonomic nervous system function. The aim of this study was to investigate autonomic nervous system influence on heart rate (HR) in transgenic mice overexpressing bovine GH (bGH). METHODS: HR and HR variability (HRV) were measured in conscious young (8-13 weeks) and old (5-6 months) female bGH and control mice using telemetry. HR control was studied using antagonists and an agonist of adrenergic and muscarinic receptors. Noradrenaline was measured in plasma, heart and kidney using high performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS: Average 24 h resting HR did not differ between bGH and control mice. After saline injection and after muscarinic blockade with methylscopolamine HR increase was blunted (in old) or absent (in young) bGH mice compared with control mice (P < 0.05). Phenylephrine caused a baroreflex mediated decrease in HR from around 550 to 300-350 beats min(-1), not different between bGH and control mice. Time- and frequency-domain measures of HRV were reduced in old bGH compared with control mice (P < 0.05). Noradrenaline concentrations were reduced by 25-49% in plasma and tissue of bGH compared with control mice (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The current study suggests reduced autonomic modulation of HR in bGH transgenic mice. Thus, GH appears to have marked effects on autonomic tone, reducing sympathetic nervous system function possibly via reduced noradrenaline stores.
