  • Thallium-201 Myocardial Imaging at Rest in Male Orienteers and Other Endurance Athletes
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Upsala Journal of Medical Sciences. - : Uppsala Medical Society. - 0300-9734 .- 2000-1967. ; 106:1, s. 59-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the period 1979 to 1992, 16 sudden unexpected cardiac deaths were known to have occurred in young Swedish orienteers. Autopsy indicated myocarditis to be the most frequent finding, most often combined with extensive myocardial fibrosis. The aim of the present investigation was to explore whether young male orienteers show a higher frequency than other young elite endurance athletes (controls) in the occurrence of Thallium-201 myocardial perfusion defects at rest, suggestive of fibrosis evoked by myocarditis. Thallium-201 perfusion abnormalities at rest were more frequently found in the controls than in the orienteers (26% vs. 12%, p=0.03). Uneven Tl-201 perfusion was associated with left ventricular mass (r=0.32, r=0.24, p<0.01, p=0.02) and body weight (r=0.30, r=0.31, p<0.01, p=0.03) in orienteers and controls, respectively. Echocardiographic left ventricular wall motion abnormalities were found in 11 athletes (9 orienteers and 2 controls) but only two displayed an abnormal Thallium-201 perfusion scan at rest. Perfusion abnormalities at rest did not occur more frequently in the orienteers but were commonly found in both groups of apparently healthy athletes making it futile to discern abnormals from normals. Thallium-201 perfusion aberrations were not associated with left ventricular wall motion abnormalities obtained by echocardiography.

  • MAX4, a 3 GeV light source with a flexible injector
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: 8th European Particle Accelerator Conference. ; , s. 686-687
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MAX4 ring is intended to be the future user facility at MAXlab. The high-brilliance 3 GeV storage ring, equipped with small gap, short period superconducting undulators, demonstrates a high mean brilliance over a wide photon energy spectrum. The ring itself is defined from the routine operation of the small gap insertion devices, which is reflected in the small aperture of the ring magnets. The development of future light sources, like the free electron laser and energy recovery systems, opens up new challenging possibilities to create high brilliance, short pulse radiation. This development is today far from being mature, a strong development of new ideas and techniques will most probably take place during the next decade(s). The MAX4 full-energy injector is constructed to incorporate these future developments. The proposed 3 GeV energy recovery race-track microtron will open up the possibility of topping up injection and to deliver Fourier transform limited spontaneous as well as coherent radiation up to the hard X-ray spectral region

  • Substrate bias amplification of a SiC junction field effect transistor with a catalytic gate electrode
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Materials Science Forum. - 0255-5476 .- 1662-9752. ; 457-460, s. 1507-1510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The drain current-voltage (I-d-V-D) characteristics of a chemical gas sensor based on a catalytic metal insulator silicon carbide field effect transistor (SiC-FET) were measured in H-2 or O-2 ambient while applying negative substrate bias, V-sub, at temperatures up to 600degreesC. An increase in the negative V-sub gives rise to an increase of the drain voltage at a given drain current level, which can be used to adjust the device baseline. In addition, we found that the difference in drain voltage between H-2 and O-2 ambient at a given drain current level (the gas response to H-2) increases for an increased negative substrate bias. By modifying an equation for the drain current in a SIT (static induction transistor), the influence of substrate bias on the amplification factors, mu and eta, was estimated using the temperature dependence of the I-d-V-D characteristics. From this, the effect of substrate bias on the gas response to hydrogen was calculated. It was clarified that the increase in the gas response caused by the negative substrate bias is due to a substrate bias dependence of the amplification factor of the short channel device.

  • A surface exposed O-linked galactose residue destabilises the structure of a folded helix-loop-helix dimer
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Organic and biomolecular chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1477-0520 .- 1477-0539. ; 1, s. 2455-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A 42-residue glycopeptide Tn-15 and the corresponding reference polypeptide Thr-15 were designed and synthesized to provide a model system for the study of how glycosylation affects the stability of a molten globule-like protein. Tn-15 and Thr-15 fold into hairpin helix-loop-helix motifs that dimerise to form four-helix bundles and the only difference between the sequences is that Tn-15 carries an O-linked N-acetylgalactosamine residue at the side chain of threonine-15 whereas the sequence Thr-15 is unglycosylated. An analysis of the mean residue ellipticities at 222 nm of the two polypeptides and of the a-H chemical shift deviations from random coil values showed that glycosylation reduced the helical content of the polypeptides and increased the dissociation constant of the helix-loop-helix dimer to form monomers. The pH dependencies of the helical content of Tn-15 and Thr-15 differed as that of Thr-15 was largely unaffected by pH in the range from pH 4 to pH 10, whereas Tn-15 lost almost half of the helical content at pH 4 upon raising the pH to 10. No single amino acid residue was found to ionize in a way that could explain the observed pH dependence of Tn-15. The temperature dependence of the mean residue ellipticity of Tn-15 revealed a surprising decrease in helicity at 278 K in comparison with that at 293 K, reminiscent of cold denaturation, that was not observed for the reference four-helix bundle Thr-15.

  • Effect of CO2 pneumoperitoneum on ventilation-perfusion relationships during laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-5172 .- 1399-6576. ; 46:5, s. 552-560
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Previous studies have shown that pneumoperitoneum transiently reduces venous admixture as assessed by a calculation based on the shunt formula, and increases arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) in patients without heart or lung disease. The aim of the present study was to further explore the relationship between ventilation-perfusion ((V) over dot (A)/(Q) over dot) before and during pneumoperitoneum by using the multiple inert gas technique. Methods: Nine patients without heart or lung disease (ASA I), with a mean age of 42 years, scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy were included. After premedication and induction of anaesthesia, radial artery and pulmonary artery catheters were introduced percutaneously. The (V) over dot (A)/(Q) over dot relationships were evaluated by the multiple inert gas elimination technique before and during pneurnoperitoneum to obtain a direct measure of the pulmonary shunt. Results: Induction of pneumoperitoneum decreased the pulmonary shunt from 5.8 (4.5) to 4.1 (3.2)% (P<0.05) and increased PaO2 from 21.7 (5.9) to 24.7 (4.8) kPa (P<0.01). During surgery, the shunt increased from 3.2 (2.8) to 5.2 (3.4)% to the same level as before pneumoperitoneum induction. No area with low (V) over dot (A)/(Q) over dot was seen. Dead space ventilation amounted to 20.0 (1.2)% in the supine position and did not change during the investigation. Conclusions: In patients without heart or lung disease, pneumoperitoneum at an intra-abdominal pressure level of 11-13 mmHg- causes a transient reduction of the pulmonary shunt. The mechanisms underlying the present finding remain to be elucidated.

  • Preparation of nanosize anatase and rutile TiO2 by hydrothermal treatment of microemulsions and their activity for photocatalytic wet oxidation of phenol
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 106:41, s. 10674-10679
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles of both anatase and rutile phases were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of microemulsions, and their photocatalytic activity for wet oxidation of phenol was studied. The only difference between the two syntheses used was that different acids were added to the microemulsions, making direct comparison of the catalytic activity of the two polymorphs possible. If hydrochloric acid was used, the rutile structure formed, and if nitric acid was used, anatase formed. The phase stability of the microemulsion was studied and according to conductivity and turbidity measurements the idea of a direct template effect could be discarded during the hydrothermal treatment. However, an initial size-templating phenomenon is possible during the mixing step. The particles, which were in the size range of a few nanometers were characterized with N-2-adsorption; XRD, SEM, and XPS. The activity of the two polymorphs for the photocatalytic oxidation of phenol in water was examined. It was shown that the rutile phase initially decomposed phenol much faster and follows a first-order process reasonably well (k = 4 x 10(-5) s(-1)). The photodecomposition process using the anatase phase led, however, to a much more rapid overall degradation following an initial slower rate of phenol oxidation. The results indicate that the observed difference of the photodecomposition process for the two TiO2 phases is due to the formation of different intermediates.
