  • Cardiac arrest in Wilson's disease after curative liver transplantation: a life-threatening complication of myocardial copper excess?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ESC Heart Failure. - : Wiley. - 2055-5822. ; 6:1, s. 228-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the case of a 38-year-old man who presented with cardiac arrest 1 year after curative liver transplantation for Wilson's disease. Clinical work-up proofed myocardial copper and iron accumulation using mass spectrometry, which led most likely to myocardial fibrosis as visualized by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (unprecedented delayed enhancement pattern) and endomyocardial biopsy. Consequently, cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation and subsequent episodes of sustained ventricular tachycardia were considered as primary cardiac manifestation of Wilson's disease. This can, as illustrated by our case, occur even late after curative liver transplantation, which is an important fact that treating physicians should be aware of during clinical follow-up of these patients.

  • A cross-country comparison and validation of firms’ stakeholder considerations in sustainable business practices
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Corporate Governance. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1472-0701 .- 1758-6054. ; 18:3, s. 408-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare and validate firms’ internal and external stakeholder considerations in sustainable business practices across business settings. It aims to assess the validity and reliability of a stakeholder framework appearing in previous studies.Design/methodology/approach: The study uses a questionnaire survey and a cross-industry sample consisting of the largest firms in corporate Sweden. Multivariate analysis tests the stakeholder framework. Each of the 294 key informants was initially identified and contacted by telephone, generating a response rate of 36.5 per cent.Findings: The tested stakeholder framework appears valid and reliable across countries to assess the internal stakeholders of focal firms, as well as their up- and downstream, market and societal stakeholders. This study provides additional empirical support to categorize firms’ stakeholder considerations in sustainable business practices.Research limitations/implications: This study validates previous findings in terms of Swedish firms’ considerations of internal and external stakeholders in sustainable business practices in relation to one similar country (Norway) and one different country (Spain). The study also shows how the three countries perceive the focal company and societal stakeholders differently. Practical implications: The tested framework sheds light on focal firms’ stakeholder considerations in sustainable business practices and elucidates the extent to which firms’ account for their internal and external stakeholders in sustainable business practices.Originality/value: This study contributes to the development of valid and reliable stakeholder theory across contexts and through time. In particular, it contributes to the development of a valid and reliable framework to categorize firms’ stakeholder considerations in sustainable business practices. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

  • Re-testing and validating a triple bottom line dominant logic for business sustainability
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Management of environmental quality. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1477-7835 .- 1758-6119. ; 30:3, s. 518-537
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The triple bottom line (TBL) is still commonly explored in research without joint consideration of economic, social and environmental elements of business sustainability (BS). The purpose of this paper is to re-test and validate a BS framework based on the TBL approach. This study is based on a questionnaire survey consisting of the largestfirms in corporate Sweden. A total of 107 usable questionnaires were ultimately received, for a response rate of 36.5 percent. The findings validate and extend a framework of a TBL-dominant logic for BS. A total of 19 dimensions indicating satisfactory validity and reliability of the BS framework were identified. The BS framework offers relevant insights to monitor and assess a TBL-dominant logic for BS. It also provides opportunities for further research. Managers can use the BS framework as a tool to map firm priorities in connection with BS. Each dimension of the BS framework offers insights into how to monitor and assess firms’ efforts in the TBL.This study contributes to validate and extend the TBL-dominant logic for BS. The BS framework also offers a timely and relevant contribution to both scholars and practitioners engaging in business sustainability. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

  • On Improving the Surge Margin of a Tip-Critical Axial Compressor Rotor
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: ASME Turbo Expo 2017: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. - 9780791850787 ; 2A-2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Delaying breakdown of the flow in the tip region of a tip-critical compressor rotor as long as possible, i.e. improving the surge margin, is of great interest to the turbomachinery community and is the focus of this study. The surge margin of ten compressor rotors is evaluated numerically, each with different blade loading and geometry at the tip. Previous work in the field has shown the dependence of an interface in the tip region of a compressor rotor between the incoming flow and the tip clearance flow with the passage flow coefficient ϕ. Previous work in the field has also shown that a higher incoming meridional momentum in the tip region can be beneficial to the surge margin of a tip-critical rotor. The present study generalizes these findings by taking into account the local blade loading of the rotor tip section and the level of loss in the tip region. The surge margin is found to improve if the blade loading of the rotor tip section is increased, which acts to increase the incoming mass flow rate and improve the surge margin provided that an increase in loss, mainly related to the strength and direction of the tip clearance flow, does not negate the effect as the compressor is throttled. Two quantities are proposed as objective functions to be used for optimization to achieve a compressor rotor with high surge margin based on the flow field at the design point. Finally, an optimization and analysis of the results is made to demonstrate the proposed objective functions in practise.

  • Optimization of Robust Transonic Compressor Blades
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ASME Turbo Expo 2016: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. - 9780791849712 ; 2C
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surface degradation in an axial compressor during its lifetime can have a considerable adverse effect on its performance. The present study investigates how the optimized design of compressor blades in a single compressor stage is affected by considering a high level of surface roughness on a level representative of a long period of in-service use. It is shown that including surface roughness in the optimization process is of relatively little importance, however, matching of compressor stages is shown to require consideration as the rotational speed must be increased to reach the design point as surface quality decrease. An increased surface roughness in itself is shown to have a large effect on performance. Two optimization approaches are compared. The first approach considers the compressor blades to be hydraulically smooth. The designs obtained from this approach are subsequently degraded by increasing the level of surface roughness. The compressor blades from the first approach are compared to designs obtained from a second optimization approach, which considers a high level of surface roughness from the outset. The degraded compressor stages from the first approach are shown to be among the best performing designs in terms of polytropic efficiency and stability when compared to designs obtained with the second approach.

  • Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids increase survival and decrease bacterial load during septic S. aureus infection, and improve neutrophil function in mice
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Infection and Immunity. - 0019-9567 .- 1098-5522. ; 83:2, s. 514-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Severe infection, including sepsis, is an increasing clinical problem that causes prolonged morbidity and substantial mortality. At present, antibiotics are essentially the only pharmacological treatment for sepsis. The incidence of resistance to antibiotics is increasing and it is therefore critical to find new therapies for sepsis. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a major cause of septic mortality. Neutrophils play an important role in the defense against bacterial infections. We have shown that a diet with high levels of dietary saturated fatty acids decreases survival in septic mice, but the mechanisms behind remain elusive. The aim of the present study was to investigate how the differences in dietary fat composition affect survival and bacterial load after experimental septic infection and neutrophil function in uninfected mice. We found that, after S. aureus infection, mice fed polyunsaturated high fat diet (HFD/P) for 8 weeks had increased survival and decreased bacterial load during sepsis compared with mice fed saturated high fat diet (HFD/S), and similar to that of mice fed low fat diet (LFD). Uninfected mice fed HFD/P had increased frequency of neutrophils in bone marrow compared with mice fed HFD/S. In addition, mice fed HFD/P had a higher frequency of neutrophils recruited to the site of inflammation in response to peritoneal injection of thioglycollate compared with HFD/S. Differences between the proportion of dietary protein and carbohydrate did not affect septic survival at all. In conclusion, polyunsaturated dietary fat increased both survival and efficiency of bacterial clearance during septic S. aureus infection. Moreover, this diet increased the frequency and chemotaxis of neutrophils, key components of the immune response to S. aureus infections.
