  • The Seventeenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys : Complete Release of MaNGA, MaStar, and APOGEE-2 Data
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0067-0049 .- 1538-4365. ; 259:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.

  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption fine structure and magnetization improvement of A-site Ce3+ doped LaFeO3
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-8853. ; 513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Synchrotron radiation (SR) is an interesting tool for probing the properties of the matter in various domains such as nanotechnology, energy materials, catalysis and the cultural heritage. Herein, we synthesized nanomultiferroic samples La1−xCexFeO3 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.15) using auto combustion method and glycine as a fuel. The magnetic behavior was studied and interrelated with the results of synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy for better understanding the compositional-dependent fine local structures of A-site (Ce3+) doped LaFeO3 nanomultiferroic. The crystallinity and phase formation of the samples of perovskite structure were confirmed by XRD technique. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed the formation of homogenous porous morphology in the prepared nanomultiferroic. The collected XAFS signals at Fe K- edge (7112 eV) and La L3- edge (5483 eV) are analyzed, fitted, and refined in both the XANES and EXAFS regions. All obtained results are correlated in order to help in the interpretation of the magnetic character of nanocrystallite La1−xCexFeO3 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.15). It was observed that there is a magnetization improvement in Ce3+ doped LaFeO3 samples where the molar magnetic susceptibility (χM) increased upon Ce3+ doping. The characteristics of the improved magnetic nanomultiferroic hand in hand with its distinguished morphology recommend it in multifunctional applications such as catalysts and/or γ-radiation dosimetry purposes.

  • High Cysteinyl Leukotriene Receptor 1 Expression Correlates with Poor Survival of Uveal Melanoma Patients and Cognate Antagonist Drugs Modulate the Growth, Cancer Secretome, and Metabolism of Uveal Melanoma Cells
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cancers. - : MDPI. - 2072-6694. ; 12:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simple Summary This research investigates the disease relevance and therapeutic potential of cysteinyl leukotriene receptors in uveal melanoma (UM), a rare eye cancer that often spreads to the liver. Unfortunately, there are no therapies available to stop the spread of UM and patients are often faced with an extremely poor prognosis. We assess whether the cysteinyl leukotriene receptors (CysLT(1) and CysLT(2)) are relevant to the progression of UM. Using UM patient samples, we identified that increased levels of CysLT(1) in tumours is associated with reduced patient survival. Using UM cell lines and zebrafish models, we found that drugs targeting CysLT(1), but not CysLT(2), can alter hallmarks of cancer including cell growth, proliferation, and metabolism. This study is the first to examine the relationship of the CysLT receptors with clinical features of UM. Our data strengthen the importance of CysLT signalling in UM and suggest that antagonism of CysLT(1) may be of therapeutic interest in the disease. Metastatic uveal melanoma (UM) is a rare, but often lethal, form of ocular cancer arising from melanocytes within the uveal tract. UM has a high propensity to spread hematogenously to the liver, with up to 50% of patients developing liver metastases. Unfortunately, once liver metastasis occurs, patient prognosis is extremely poor with as few as 8% of patients surviving beyond two years. There are no standard-of-care therapies available for the treatment of metastatic UM, hence it is a clinical area of urgent unmet need. Here, the clinical relevance and therapeutic potential of cysteinyl leukotriene receptors (CysLT(1) and CysLT(2)) in UM was evaluated. High expression of CYSLTR1 or CYSLTR2 transcripts is significantly associated with poor disease-free survival and poor overall survival in UM patients. Digital pathology analysis identified that high expression of CysLT(1) in primary UM is associated with reduced disease-specific survival (p = 0.012; HR 2.76; 95% CI 1.21-6.3) and overall survival (p = 0.011; HR 1.46; 95% CI 0.67-3.17). High CysLT(1) expression shows a statistically significant (p = 0.041) correlation with ciliary body involvement, a poor prognostic indicator in UM. Small molecule drugs targeting CysLT(1) were vastly superior at exerting anti-cancer phenotypes in UM cell lines and zebrafish xenografts than drugs targeting CysLT(2). Quininib, a selective CysLT(1) antagonist(,) significantly inhibits survival (p < 0.0001), long-term proliferation (p < 0.0001), and oxidative phosphorylation (p < 0.001), but not glycolysis, in primary and metastatic UM cell lines. Quininib exerts opposing effects on the secretion of inflammatory markers in primary versus metastatic UM cell lines. Quininib significantly downregulated IL-2 and IL-6 in Mel285 cells (p < 0.05) but significantly upregulated IL-10, IL-1 beta, IL-2 (p < 0.0001), IL-13, IL-8 (p < 0.001), IL-12p70 and IL-6 (p < 0.05) in OMM2.5 cells. Finally, quininib significantly inhibits tumour growth in orthotopic zebrafish xenograft models of UM. These preclinical data suggest that antagonism of CysLT(1), but not CysLT(2), may be of therapeutic interest in the treatment of UM.

  • Optimizing Reverse Osmosis Feed Spacer Design for Enhanced Dimethylphenol Removal from Wastewater: A Study of Hydrodynamics and Performance Indicators
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Water. - : MDPI. - 2073-4441. ; 16:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to its high pollutant rejection and low energy usage, the spiral wound module of reverse osmosis (RO) process is the most commonly used technology utilised in wastewater treatment. For a spiral wound module, the presence of a feed spacer is important as a key solution to mitigate the concentration polarisation phenomenon, due to disorderly fluid flow, and to improve the mass transfer coefficient. Undoubtedly, improvements in the spiral wound module design, mainly in the symmetrical shape of the feed spacer, can have a significant impact on the cost and probable use of these modules. Despite the wide interest in appraising the impact of feed spacer geometry and orientation on the performance of a spiral wound module for RO process-based water desalination, the hydrodynamics of feed spacers (pressure drop and mass transfer coefficient) and the associated influences of feed spacer design (the height of the feed spacer, the angle of the filaments, and the porosity) on the removal of pollutants from wastewater have not yet been addressed. The current investigation aims to fill this gap by studying the hydrodynamics and design parameters of the selected parallelogram feed spacer type ultrafiltration (UF−3) for the removal of dimethylphenol from wastewater. Using model-based simulation, the impacts of UF−3 feed spacer design parameters, including the height, angle between the filaments (orientation), and porosity on the pressure drop, friction factor, axial flow fluid velocity, mass transfer coefficient, water flux, dimethylphenol rejection, recovery rate, and specific energy consumption are detailed in this study. The study intends to demonstrate the optimum design features of UF−3 feed spacer that should be considered to assure the highest elimination of dimethylphenol from wastewater in addition to the lowest specific energy consumption.

  • Neoproterozoic and Cretaceous mantle oxidation states : Controls Chock for and heterogeneity through time
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Lithos. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-4937 .- 1872-6143. ; 356
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To estimate the oxygen fugacity (fO(2)) of the Neoproterozoic and Cretaceous suprasubduction zone mantle, and to evaluate the possible secular changes in the upper mantle oxidation state, the compositions of spinel, olivine and orthopyroxene of Neoproterozoic (Egypt and Saudi Arabia) and late Cretaceous (Iran) mantle rocks were determined. For accurate estimation fO(2), spinel ferric iron was calculated after correcting the electron microprobe data using a set of spine! standards for which the ferric iron content was measured by Mossbauer spectroscopy. The Neoproterozoic samples record strongly heterogenous fO(2) values ranging from moderately oxidized (FMQ +0.54) to ultra-reduced (FMQ-4.73) for harzburgites, from highly oxidized (FMQ+1.49) to moderately reduced (FMQ-0.60) for dunites as well as one highly reduced (FMQ-1.61) value for chromitite. Such heterogeneity is not apparent in the late Cretaceous harzburgites that record fO(2) values ranging from slightly oxidized (FMQ +0.45) to moderately reduced (FMQ -0.85). The fO(2) of the Neoproterozoic forearc mantle is most easily explained by melt-mantle interaction and deep-mantle recycling, while that of the late Cretaceous forearc mantle can be attributed to variable degrees of melt-mantle interaction. The estimated fO(2 )values of Neoproterozoic/Cretaceous mantle unaffected by melt-rock interaction and deep-mantle recycling, and published values of Precambrian and Modern mantle suggest a consistent upper mantle oxidation state from Proterozoic to present day.

  • Women's Lived Experiences of Chronic Pain: Faces of Gendered Suffering
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Qualitative health research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 30:5, s. 772-782
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women are overrepresented in pain rehabilitation. They seem to be more exposed to comorbidity between mental illness and diseases of the musculoskeletal system than men, implying that besides biopsychosocial factors, gender relations and cultural context should be considered. The aim of the study is to understand the lived experience of women with chronic pain from a caring science and gender perspective. Gadamerian philosophical hermeneutics has been used to analyze interviews from 21 women living with chronic pain in Sweden. The hermeneutical process revealed intertwined experiences of overperformance, loneliness, pain, and exhaustion. Women’s experience of an overwhelming life situation and the significance of mutual dependency seem to be central to health and suffering in women with chronic pain. We suggest, contemporary health care to acknowledge women’s health and suffering in relation to their life situation and prevailing gender roles.

  • Health and suffering are associated with social support: a cross-sectional study of women and mothers with exhaustion and pain
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC women's health. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1472-6874. ; 21:1, s. 259-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundDespite women are generally overrepresented in behavioral, mental, and musculoskeletal disorders, motherhood as a central part of women’s life is poorly understood in relation to exhaustion and long-lasting pain. Mothers’ health impairments imply suffering both for herself and her family. A profound understanding of health is needed taking mothers’ subjective health experience, their suffering and life situation into account to give women, their families and society better prerequisites to alleviate exhaustion and long-lasting pain. The aim of the study was to describe health and suffering of women and mothers undergoing rehabilitation for long-lasting pain and exhaustion and its correlation with perceived social support.MethodsThe study had a cross-sectional design with an exploratory approach. A main sample consisted of 166 women undergoing rehabilitation for exhaustion and long-lasting pain and a reference sample included 129 women working and studying within health care professions. Both samples included women with and without children. Women’s subjective health and suffering was assessed from a caring science perspective using the recently developed and validated Health and Suffering Scale. Two additional scales measuring exhaustion and social support were distributed among the two samples. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression models, including health and suffering and perceived social support, were analyzed.ResultsMothers undergoing rehabilitation for pain and exhaustion reported significantly poorer health and more suffering compared to healthy mothers, but similar health and suffering when compared with childless women in rehabilitation. Health and suffering were correlated with perceived social support among both healthy and exhausted mothers. In both samples, the correlation between health and suffering and social support was stronger among mothers than among women without children.ConclusionsWomen and mothers living with exhaustion and long-lasting pain show signs of unbearable suffering and perceived insufficient social support. Social support from various sources particularly helps mothers to create meaning in life and make their suffering bearable. Hence, health care must address the fact that mothers are dependent on their immediate social environment and that this dependency interacts with their health and suffering on an existential level.
