  • Determinants of morbidity and mortality following emergency abdominal surgery in children in low-income and middle-income countries
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: BMJ Global Health. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2059-7908. ; 1:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Child health is a key priority on the global health agenda, yet the provision of essential and emergency surgery in children is patchy in resource-poor regions. This study was aimed to determine the mortality risk for emergency abdominal paediatric surgery in low-income countries globally. Methods: Multicentre, international, prospective, cohort study. Self-selected surgical units performing emergency abdominal surgery submitted prespecified data for consecutive children aged <16 years during a 2-week period between July and December 2014. The United Nation's Human Development Index (HDI) was used to stratify countries. The main outcome measure was 30-day postoperative mortality, analysed by multilevel logistic regression. Results: This study included 1409 patients from 253 centres in 43 countries; 282 children were under 2 years of age. Among them, 265 (18.8%) were from low-HDI, 450 (31.9%) from middle-HDI and 694 (49.3%) from high-HDI countries. The most common operations performed were appendectomy, small bowel resection, pyloromyotomy and correction of intussusception. After adjustment for patient and hospital risk factors, child mortality at 30 days was significantly higher in low-HDI (adjusted OR 7.14 (95% CI 2.52 to 20.23), p<0.001) and middle-HDI (4.42 (1.44 to 13.56), p=0.009) countries compared with high-HDI countries, translating to 40 excess deaths per 1000 procedures performed. Conclusions: Adjusted mortality in children following emergency abdominal surgery may be as high as 7 times greater in low-HDI and middle-HDI countries compared with high-HDI countries. Effective provision of emergency essential surgery should be a key priority for global child health agendas.

  • Cobalt oxide magnetic nanoparticles-chitosan nanocomposite based electrochemical urea biosensor
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Indian Journal of Physics. - : Springer Verlag (Germany). - 0973-1458 .- 0974-9845. ; 89:4, s. 331-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, a potentiometric urea biosensor has been fabricated on glass filter paper through the immobilization of urease enzyme onto chitosan/cobalt oxide (CS/Co3O4) nanocomposite. A copper wire with diameter of 500 mu m is attached with nanoparticles to extract the voltage output signal. The shape and dimensions of Co3O4 magnetic nanoparticles are investigated by scanning electron microscopy and the average diameter is approximately 80-100 nm. Structural quality of Co3O4 nanoparticles is confirmed from X-ray powder diffraction measurements, while the Raman spectroscopy has been used to understand the chemical bonding between different atoms. The magnetic measurement has confirmed that Co3O4 nanoparticles show ferromagnetic behavior, which could be attributed to the uncompensated surface spins and/or finite size effects. The ferromagnetic order of Co3O4 nanoparticles is raised with increasing the decomposition temperature. A physical adsorption method is adopted to immobilize the surface of CS/Co3O4 nanocomposite. Potentiometric sensitivity curve has been measured over the concentration range between 1 x 10(-4) and 8 x 10(-2) M of urea electrolyte solution revealing that the fabricated biosensor holds good sensing ability with a linear slope curve of similar to 45 mV/decade. In addition, the presented biosensor shows good reusability, selectivity, reproducibility and resistance against interferers along with the stable output response of similar to 12 s.

  • RETRACTED: Empirical Modeling of Physiochemical Immune Response of Multilayer Zinc Oxide Nanomaterials under UV Exposure to Melanoma and Foreskin Fibroblasts
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2045-2322. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carcinogenesis is a complex molecular process starting with genetic and epigenetic alterations, mutation stimulation, and DNA modification, which leads to proteomic adaptation ending with an uncontrolled proliferation mechanism. The current research focused on the empirical modelling of the physiological response of human melanoma cells (FM55P) and human foreskin fibroblasts cells (AG01518) to the multilayer zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials under UV-A exposure. To validate this experimental scheme, multilayer ZnO nanomaterials were grown on a femtotip silver capillary and conjugated with protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Furthermore, PpIX-conjugated ZnO nanomaterials grown on the probe were inserted into human melanoma (FM55P) and foreskin fibroblasts cells (AG01518) under UV-A light exposure. Interestingly, significant cell necrosis was observed because of a loss in mitochondrial membrane potential just after insertion of the femtotip tool. Intense reactive oxygen species (ROS) fluorescence was observed after exposure to the ZnO NWs conjugated with PpIX femtotip model under UV exposure. Results were verified by applying several experimental techniques, e.g., ROS detection, MTT assay, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The present work reports experimental modelling of cell necrosis in normal human skin as well as a cancerous tissue. These obtained results pave the way for a more rational strategy for biomedical and clinical applications.

  • Get EPF Composer back to the future: A trip from Galileo to Photon after 11 years
  • 2018
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This talk provides a concrete return of experience about the migration of Eclipse Process Framework (EPF) Composer[i] from Eclipse Galileo 3.5.2 to Eclipse Neon 4.6.3. The migration of EPF Composer was performed[ii] in four phases: compatible versions of required softwares were installed from the Neon software repository and then deprecations in the source code were analyzed and fixed; scheduling conflicts were resolved for the persistence of method elements (i.e., method configurations, method plugins, method content descriptions and processes) in their own folders and XMI files; appearance and height problems were resolved for the combo box which supports users in selecting the currently used method configuration, the blank views were removed from the authoring and browsing perspectives, but also problems with the rich text editor were resolved for enabling users to format and style text; and incompatible bundles were removed from the feature plugins, replacing bundles were added and other missing dependencies for the bundles were resolved for exporting the standalone application. This talk will also present the return of experience of starting a collaboration with the EPF Composer team from IBM in order to submit the migrated code, eventually become a committer of the project, and publish a release of EPF Composer for Eclipse Neon. More about the Eclipse Process Framework: The EPF Composer is an open-source project developed for the process engineers and project managers. It provides support for authoring, tailoring and deploying methods and processes for development organizations and projects. Although this project has attracted considerable attention from researchers and practitioners worldwide, the migration to newer versions of technologies was never performed. In the context of the AMASS project[iii], the migration of EPF Composer was critical for allowing the integration with other tools in the AMASS platform, a large open-source platform that constitutes an ecosystem building on top of several Eclipse and PolarSys projects such as EPF Composer, OpenCert[iv] and CHESS[v]. The migration of EPF Composer has been tested by Vishal Sharnagat (IBM). Barbara Gallina and Muhammad Atif Javed would also like to thank Bruce MacIsaac (IBM), Huascar Espinoza (Tecnalia) and Gaël Blondelle (Eclipse Foundation) for their support in the migration. As future work, we plan to implement the support for CDO model repository[vi]. • On-Demand Automated Traceability Maintenance and Evolution
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Lect. Notes Comput. Sci.. - Cham : Springer Verlag. - 9783319904207 ; , s. 111-120
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After the painstaking process of traceability construction, a substantial evolution of a software system, such as a new major version leads to the decay of traceability links. To date, however, none of the published studies have considered the on-demand update of traceability links. This paper presents an on-demand automated approach for case-based maintenance and evolution of traceability links in the context of different versions of a software project. The approach focuses on the component-to-component features for identification and prioritization of previous traceability cases, which are then used to perform reuse and adaptation of traceability links based on the matches and mismatches, respectively. The adapted (i.e., newly constructed) traceability links can then be verified by a human analyst and stored in a case base. The approach has been validated using an open-source framework for mobile games, named Soomla Android store.

  • Safety-oriented Process Line Engineering via Seamless Integration between EPF Composer and BVR Tool : Variability Management in Process Lines
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: SPLC '18 Proceeedings of the 22nd International Systems and Software Product Line Conference - Volume 2. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. ; , s. 23-28
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The integration between process engineering and variability management is required for tailoring of safety-oriented processes with variabilities to individual projects in a similar manner to the product lines. Previous studies have not adequately established the Safety-oriented Process Lines (SoPLs). This paper focuses on the seamless integration between Eclipse Process Framework (EPF) Composer and Base Variability Resolution (BVR) Tool. The former supports the major parts of the OMG’s Software & Systems Process Engineering Metamodel (SPEM) Version 2.0, while the latter is a simplification and enhancement of the OMG’s revised submission of Common Variability Language (CVL). The proposed integration is implemented as Eclipse plugin. It provides support for importing backend folders and files within the method library of EPF Composer, resolving problems with the files for variability management with the BVR Tool, and exporting back the resolved process models to the EPF Composer. The applicability of the implemented plugin is demonstrated by engineering an ECSS-E-ST-40C compliant SoPL for the space projects and applications.

  • Towards variant management and change impact analysis in safety-oriented process-product lines
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery. ; , s. 2372-2375
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In safety-critical (software) systems, safety management embraces both processes and products, which due to e.g., product's upgrade, tend to be tailored, giving rise to safety-oriented product lines and corresponding safety-oriented process lines. To tailor these lines systematically, their inter-dependencies would have been taken into consideration. To date, however, no satisfying implemented solution is available on the shelf. Accordingly, this paper focuses on the co-engineering of process and product lines. At first, the process and product lines need to be established for which the integration between Eclipse Process Framework (EPF) Composer, Composition with Guarantees for High-integrity Embedded Software Components Assembly (CHESS) Tool and Base Variability Resolution (BVR) Tool is achieved; they are process engineering, product design and variant management solutions, respectively. After that, the process and product lines are integrated. This is done for cross-dimension variant management and change impact analysis. The applicability of the integrated lines is illustrated for the attitude and orbit control subsystem.

  • Tightly Coupled Positioning and Multipath Radio Channel Tracking
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems. - 0018-9251. ; , s. 1522-1535
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radio based localization is an active research topic with a wide range of applications. In this paper, we focus on localization of a radio receiver equipped with an inertial measurement unit. The localization is performed while simultaneously constructing a map of the small scale fading pattern in the local radio environment. The map in our case is a ray-trace-based multipath channel model. This solution is enabled by sensor fusion of information from the channel estimation data and the inertial sensors, and it does not assume any knowledge of, e.g., transmitter locations. The sensor data is fused in a recursive state space model that combines the kinematic motion model with the ray-based radio channel model, and the state vector is estimated using a particle filter. The choice of the particle filter is justified by the multimodal characteristics of the posterior likelihood distributions that follows from the nonlinearities of the problem. The work is assuming a single receiver antenna but the approach can also be transferred to multiple antenna systems. We study the performance of the approach under realistic assumptions, based on the performance of today’s low-cost inertial sensors and radio systems, including accelerometer and gyroscope noise, and also radio receiver frequency error and noise. Simulations show a significant improvement in long-term positioning performance, evaluated against dead reckoning. The work is concluded with experiments which serve as a proof of concept for the proposed technique, using no extra equipment compared to what can be found in a modern cellular phone.
