- We present here a draft genome sequence of the red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus. Because the chicken is a modern descendant of the dinosaurs and the first non-mammalian amniote to have its genome sequenced, the draft sequence of its genome--composed of approximately one billion base pairs of sequence and an estimated 20,000-23,000 genes--provides a new perspective on vertebrate genome evolution, while also improving the annotation of mammalian genomes. For example, the evolutionary distance between chicken and human provides high specificity in detecting functional elements, both non-coding and coding. Notably, many conserved non-coding sequences are far from genes and cannot be assigned to defined functional classes. In coding regions the evolutionary dynamics of protein domains and orthologous groups illustrate processes that distinguish the lineages leading to birds and mammals. The distinctive properties of avian microchromosomes, together with the inferred patterns of conserved synteny, provide additional insights into vertebrate chromosome architecture.

High-spin Spectroscopy of 63Ga and 65Ga

- High-spin states in the nuclei Ga-63 and Ga-65 were studied following the reaction S-32 + Ca-40 at a reaction energy of 125 MeV and using the GASP gamma -ray spectrometer in combination with the ISIS charged-particle detector system. In addition to low-lying negative-parity states with single-particle character, rotational-like cascades built on the 9/2(+) and 19/2(-) states have been observed in both nuclei. Sidebands with negative parity in Ga-63 and positive parity in Ga-65 could be established. The experimental results are compared with Total Routhian Surface calculations which describe the nuclei as moderately deformed (beta (2) approximate to 0.25) and gamma soft at low rotational frequencies. The highest experimentally observed positive-parity state in Ga-65 (41/2(+)) is in good agreement with the calculated crossing of the collective band with a non-collective one terminating at this spin.

Halo excitations in fragmentation of He-6 at 240 MeV/u on carbon and lead targets

- Dissociation of a 240 MeV/u beam of He-6, incident on carbon and lead targets, has been studied in kinematically complete experiments to investigate low-lying excitation modes in the halo nucleus He-6. It is shown that alignment effects characterize the inelastic scattering and allow an unambiguous assignment of the spin of a narrow resonance observed in the excitation energy spectrum. The differential cross sections for the He-6 inelastic scattering on carbon and lead targets were deduced from the measured moments of the two neutrons and the a-particle. An analysis of these distributions shows that quadrupole and, possibly, monopole excitations characterize the hadronic interaction, while the dipole mode is dominating in Coulomb dissociation. Neither theoretically predicted new resonance states in He-6 nor nuclear excitation of a dipole mode were found. Direct evidence has been obtained for strong suppression of Coulornb post-acceleration in direct Coulomb breakup in a lead target.

Superdeformation in the Doubly Magic Nucleus 40Ca

- A rotational band with seven gamma -ray transitions between states with spin 2 (h) over bar and 16 (h) over bar has been observed in the doubly magic, self-conjugate nucleus Ca-40(20)20. The measured transition quadrupole moment of 1.80(-0.29)(+0.39)eb indicates a superdeformed shape with a deformation beta (2) = 0.59(-0.07)(+0.11). The features of this band are explained by cranked relativistic mean field calculations to arise from an 8-particle 8-hole excitation.

- A 4 pi silicon bail for detection and identification of light charged particles in large multidetector gamma-arrays as EUROBALL is presented. The design is based on a N = 42 ball with 12 pentagons and 30 hexagons as used in the GASP array. The absorptive material for gamma-rays is minimized to the detector thickness of 300 or 500 mu m and a 0.63 mm ceramic backing. The geometrical coverage is designed for about 90% of 4 pi. A pulse shape discrimination method with totally depleted detectors working in the reverse mount allows identifying protons and alpha-particles above an energy threshold of about 2 MeV. The performances of the ball were rested at the tandem - booster accelerator combination of the MPI Heidelberg in two experiments using the high-recoil reaction of 228 MeV Ni-58 + Ti-46 and the low-recoil reaction of 95 MeV O-16 + Ni-58. The two-dimensional spectra of zero-crossing (ZC) versus energy confirmed an excellent discrimination of protons and alpha-particles in all the detectors at different angles. The energy spectra of protons and alpha-particles measured in the experiments are presented. too. The gamma-spectra measured in coincidence with various combinations of emitted particles showed a high selectivity of the ball. The reduced total efficiency for protons of 59% and 55% and alpha-particles of 44% and 32% measured in a nuclear spectroscopy application is analyzed in a Monte-Carlo simulation (GEANT). It is due to a combined influence of a thick target needed to stop the recoiling residual nuclei and thick absorbers needed to protect the Si-detectors from scattered beam. The results along with the GEANT extrapolation to optimum experimental conditions confirm that RoSiB is a highly efficient and selective device for identification of rare reaction channels with heavy ions.
