  • The genome of the model beetle and pest Tribolium castaneum.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 1476-4687. ; 452:7190, s. 949-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tribolium castaneum is a representative of earth’s most numerous eukaryotic order, a powerful model organism for the study of generalized insect development, and also an important pest of stored agricultural products. We describe its genome sequence here. This omnivorous beetle has evolved an ability to interact with a diverse chemical environment as evidenced by large expansions in odorant and gustatory receptors, as well as p450 and other detoxification enzymes. Developmental patterns in Tribolium are more representative of other arthropods than those found in Drosophila, a fact represented in gene content and function. For one, Tribolium has retained more ancestral genes involved in cell-cell communication than Drosophila, and some are expressed in the growth zone crucial for axial elongation in short germ development. Systemic RNAi in T. castaneum appears to use mechanisms distinct from those found in C. elegans, but nevertheless offers similar power for the elucidation of gene function and identification of targets for selective insect control.

  • Study of β-delayed charged particle emission of 11Li: Evidence of new decay channels
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 111:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The break-up of the 18.2 MeV state in 11Be was studied in a 11Li β-decay experiment. We report here on the study of the dominating breakup channels involving na6He or 3n2α in the final state, with special emphasis dedicated in this contribution to the three-particle channel. The two emitted charged particles were detected in coincidence using a highly segmented experimental set-up. The observed experimental energy-vs-energy scatter plot indicates a sequential breakup where nuclei of mass 4, alpha particles, and mass 7, 7He, are involved. A Monte-Carlo simulation of the sequential channel, 11Be* → α + 7He → nα6He was performed and compared to the experimental data and to a simulation of the direct break-up of the 18.2 MeV state nα6He by phase space energy distribution. The energy-versus-energy plot are explained by the sequential simulation but not by the phase space simulation.

  • Phase and molecular orientation in metal-free phthalocyanine films on conducting glass: Characterization of two deposition methods
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090. ; 493:1-2, s. 13-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • in this study, metal-free phthalocyanine has been deposited on a conducting glass surface by two methods: by spreading the molecular powder directly on the substrate in air and by vapor sublimation under ultra-high vacuum conditions (evaporation). The films have been characterized by means of core level X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy, X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and Ultra Violet and Visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Our results show that the two deposition methods produce molecular overlayers in different polymorphic phases; the UV-Vis measurements indicate that the film obtained by powder deposition is of x-phase type whereas sublimation leads to an a-polymorph structure. The XAS results show that in the powder deposited film the molecules are mainly oriented parallel to the surface. This is opposite to the case of the vapor deposited film, where the molecules mainly are oriented orthogonal to the surface.

  • Study of the Dissociation of Nitrous Oxide Following Resonant Excitation of the Nitrogen and Oxygen K-shells
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 128:2, s. 024306-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A photochemistry study on nitrous oxide making use of site-selective excitation of terminal nitrogen, central nitrogen, and oxygen 1s -> 3 pi excitations is presented. The resonant Auger decay which takes place following excitation can lead to dissociation of the N2O+ ion. To elucidate the nuclear dynamics, energy-resolved Auger electrons were detected in coincidence with the ionic dissociation products, and a strong dependence of the fragmentation pathways on the core-hole site was observed in the binding energy region of the first satellite states. A description based on the molecular orbitals as well as the correlation between the thermodynamical thresholds of ion formation and the first electronic states of N2O+ has been used to qualitatively explain the observed fragmentation patterns.

  • Study of $[$beta$]$-delayed 3-body and 5-body breakup channels observed in the decay of 11Li
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. ; 810, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The [beta]-delayed charged particle emission from 11Li has been studied with emphasis on the three-body n[alpha]6He and five-body 2[alpha]3n channels from the 10.59 and 18.15 MeV states in 11Be. Monte Carlo simulations using an R-matrix formalism lead to the conclusion that the AHe resonance states play a significant role in the break-up of these states. The results exclude an earlier assumption of a phase-space description of the break-up process of the 18.15 MeV state. Evidence for extra sequential decay paths is found for both states.

  • A High-resolution Study of Resonant Auger Decay Processes in N2O After Core Electron Excitation from Terminal Nitrogen, Central Nitrogen and Oxygen Atoms to the 3π LUMO
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 40:17, s. 3357-3365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Decay spectra of N2O following excitation to the N terminal (Nt) → π*, N central (Nc) → π* and O is → π* intermediate states are reported. The final states reached after participator decay show resonant enhancement consistent with a local-density-of-states analysis based on the Mulliken population of the valence molecular orbitals. In particular, the X-state is resonantly enhanced mostly after excitation from the Nt 1s and the O Is core levels to the π*, while the B-state is mostly enhanced following the excitation of the Nc Is → π* intermediate state. Below the Nt Is threshold, the lowest lying peak related to spectator decay falls at lower binding energy than the highest lying participator peak. This can be attributed to a particularly strong screening effect exerted by the excited electron in the LUMO.

  • Electronic Structure of Core-excited and Core-ionized Methyl Oxirane
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena. - : Elsevier BV. - 0368-2048 .- 1873-2526. ; 156, s. 259-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a detailed analysis of the electronic structure of methyl oxirane, including core-level photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption at both C and O K-shells, resonant Auger and normal Auger spectroscopy. The X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) around the C K-edge can be easily interpreted on the ground of the chemical shift between the carbon atoms with different chemical environments. The X-ray absorption data around the O K-edge are quite structureless, hinting for a likely fragmentation process (possibly implying a ring-opening reaction). In resonant Auger spectra obtained after excitation below both the C 1s and O 1s ionization thresholds we notice a predominance of spectator decay implying a strong mixing between empty molecular orbitals and Rydberg states.

  • Effect of Guggulsterone and Cembranoids of Commiphora mukul on Pancreatic Phospholipase A(2) : Role in Hypocholesterolemia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of natural products (Print). - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0163-3864 .- 1520-6025. ; 72:1, s. 24-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Guggulsterone (7) and cembranoids (8-12) from Commiphora mukul stem bark resin guggul were shown to be specific modulators of two independent sites that are also modulated by bile salts (1-6) to control cholesterol absorption and catabolism. Guggulsterone (7) antagonized the chenodeoxycholic acid (3)-activated nuclear farnesoid X receptor (FXR), which regulates cholesterol metabolism in the liver. The cembranoids did not show a noticeable effect on FXR, but lowered the cholate (I)-activated rate of human pancreatic 113 phospholipase A2 (hPLA2), which controls gastrointestinal absorption of fat and cholesterol. Analysis of the data using a kinetic model has suggested an allosteric mechanism for the rate increase of hPLA2 by cholate and also for the rate-lowering effect by certain bile salts or cembranoids on the cholate-activated hPLA2 hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine vesicles. The allosteric inhibition of PLA2 by certain bile salts and cembranoids showed some structural specificity. Biophysical studies also showed specific interaction of the bile salts with the interface-bound cholate-activated PLA2. Since cholesterol homeostasis in mammals is regulated by FXR in the liver for metabolism and by PLA2 in the intestine for absorption, modulation of PLA2 and FXR by bile acids and selected guggul components suggests novel possibilities for hypolipidemic and hypocholesterolemic therapies.
