  • Overlayer resonance and quantum well state of Cs/Cu(111) studied with angle-resolved photoemission, LEED, and first-principles calculations
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 1098-0121. ; 75:15, s. 9-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction are used to study submonolayer coverages of Cs on Cu(111) at room temperature (RT) and 170 K. At RT, the Cs saturation coverage is approximately 90% of the full monolayer coverage. The full monolayer is characterized by a quantum well state (QWS) band having an energy of 25 meV below the Fermi level (E-F) in the (Gamma) over bar point and a resonance band extending to energies below the Cu band gap. This is supported by our first-principles calculations. Low-energy electron diffraction shows that the Cs overalyer forms a (2x2) structure over a wide coverage range, in which the QWS has energies from 50 meV above to 25 meV below E-F. The continued energy shift of the QWS after saturation of the diffraction angles is interpreted in terms of vacancies in the overlayer.

  • Myc-induced SUMOylation is a therapeutic vulnerability for B-cell lymphoma.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 1528-0020 .- 0006-4971. ; 124:13, s. 2081-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Myc oncogenic transcription factors (c-Myc, N-Myc, and L-Myc) coordinate the control of cell growth, division, and metabolism. In cancer, Myc overexpression is often associated with aggressive disease, which is in part due to the destruction of select targets by the ubiquitin-proteasome system (eg, SCF(Skp2)-directed destruction of the Cdk inhibitor p27(Kip1)). We reasoned that Myc would also regulate SUMOylation, a related means of posttranslational modification of proteins, and that this circuit would play essential roles in Myc-dependent tumorigenesis. Here, we report marked increases in the expression of genes that encode regulators and components of the SUMOylation machinery in mouse and human Myc-driven lymphomas, resulting in hyper-SUMOylation in these tumors. Further, inhibition of SUMOylation by genetic means disables Myc-induced proliferation, triggering G2/M cell-cycle arrest, polyploidy, and apoptosis. Using genetically defined cell models and conditional expression systems, this response was shown to be Myc specific. Finally, in vivo loss-of-function and pharmacologic studies demonstrated that inhibition of SUMOylation provokes rapid regression of Myc-driven lymphoma. Thus, targeting SUMOylation represents an attractive therapeutic option for lymphomas with MYC involvement.

  • Sustainable Off-grid Systems with Integration of Renewable Generation and Hydrogen-Fuel Cell
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper has investigated the role of renewable hydrogen produced from excess variable renewable energy (VRE) in reducing carbon emission and excess electricity curtailment in off-grid systems. The excess electricity produced from VRE is used for production of green hydrogen by electrolysis of water through Electrolyser in addition to serving deferrable load and battery storage systems (BSS). The hydrogen Produced from VRE sources is supplied to fuel cells to give electricity. The case study is based on modeling and simulation of off-grid systems with photovoltaics (PV) and wind turbines (WT) as two possible sources of power and, BSS and hydrogen as two possible storage media for an unelectrified small rural town called Gara Botora-Kemisie in Ethiopia. A Comparative analysis of the system with diesel generator (DG) and the system without DG is performed to identify a sustainable system for the selected site. Different case studies have been performed for comparison purposes. The results of the simulation show that, the system with PV, WT, BSS and hydrogen fuel cell is more sustainable and fossil free system and viable in reducing renewable energy curtailment.

  • Queer eye on AI : binary systems versus fluid identities
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Handbook of critical studies of artificial intelligence. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781803928555 - 9781803928562 ; , s. 595-606
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is becoming more common to replace or augment human-based decisions with algorithmic calculations and evaluations using artificial intelligence (AI). Facial analysis systems (FA) are examples of how AI in particular is intertwined with both the most mundane and the most critical aspects of human life. Exploring images for the purposes of face detection, recognition and/or classification, FA shows an entanglement between human identity, self-presentation and computation. In this chapter, we discuss automated facial analysis technology from a queer theoretical standpoint, focusing on the concerns and risks when systems like FA are used in a binary way to categorize, measure and make decisions based on computerized assumptions about gender and sexuality. Further, we discuss issues of privacy, bias and fairness related to FA technology as well as potential improvements, for example, by using participatory design. Finally, this chapter suggests that a queer perspective on FA can create new ways to relate to technology.

  • AFLP assisted DNA-Barcoding of mullets (Mugilidae) used in East African aquaculture
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Western Indian Ocean Journal of Marine Science. - 0856-860X .- 2683-6416. ; 11:1, s. 41-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing demand for wild caught juvenile fish to supply the market for aquaculture. However, little is known about the genetic effects of juvenile collection from wild populations. There are a number of imminent threats to both aquaculture systems and wild fish populations. Juvenile collection from a single population can for example reduce population’s evolutionary potential as well as the disease resistance within an aquaculture pond. In this study, we investigated the local genetic structure of juvenile mullets collected from five sites around Bagamoyo (Tanzanian mainland) and Zanzibar Island, East Africa. Fish were caught in low tide using a seine net. The fish were morphologically identified, and then genetically identified using direct sequencing of the CO1 gene with cross referencing with the Barcode of Life Database (BOLD) systems.  Molecular variance analyses were used to infer genetic subdivision based on geographic sampling site as well as inferring population structure through the Bayesian assignment test implemented in STRUCTURE 2.3. Our results showed that samples morphologically identified as Mugil cephalus where in fact Valamugil buchanani and we also found evidence of an introgression genome event, where the gene flow from one species may have affected the general gene pool. The Bayesian analysis revealed a clear genetic population structure among the sampled fish; the main difference was the presence of a unique mainland cluster. Our findings may have important implications for management and conservation of mullet fishes in the region and elsewhere.
