  • Combining engineering and teacher education – ideas and experiences from Chalmers University of Technology
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Bidrag från 8:e Utvecklingskonferensen för Sveriges ingenjörsutbildningar. - 9789178672714
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In response to the lack of STEM teachers in Sweden, Chalmers University of Technology offers a double degree program in engineering and education. This article investigates which ideas behind the program’s design have been of particular value in implementing the program and their added value. The five main ideas are: involve skilled schoolteachers called master teachers in the education, having many entrances to the program but only one exit, using interviews as part of the admission process, using a competency model to ensure coherence in the education, focusing on concrete work skills at the beginning of the education and later move on to theory and further development. We invite other universities to consider double degree programs in engineering and education and be inspired by these five ideas in their implementation.

  • Pragmatic Research on Educational Practice
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings Chalmers Conference on Teaching and Learning 2023. - 9789188041548 ; , s. 56-59
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During a round table discussion at a collegial conference on teaching and learning, a focus group with 12 teachers from a technical university discuss challenges with studying their own teaching practice. Furthermore, a concept called PREP – Pragmatic Research on Educational Practice, with the goal of engaging engineering educators in studying, documenting, and sharing their initiatives to improve teaching practices, is introduced and discussed. Among the main obstacles to researching their own teaching practice, the participants pointed to a lack of time, know-how, and motivation. They expressed that there is potential in the collegial part of PREP and the time efficiency of using what can be studied during a course. The role of PREP studies, in relation to regular educational research, is also discussed, and that PREP may be perceived as a devaluation of educational science was problematized. Some participants felt that it was very likely that they would participate in a PREP group next academic year if given the opportunity.

  • PREP- Pragmatic Research on Educational Practice
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SEFI 2023 - 51st Annual Conference of the European Society for Engineering Education : Engineering Education for Sustainability, Proceedings - Engineering Education for Sustainability, Proceedings. - : SEFI. - 9782873520267 ; , s. 163-172
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate a concept called PREP - Pragmatic Research on Educational Practice, with the goal of engaging engineering educators in studying, documenting and sharing their initiatives to improve teaching practices. This concept is compared to other methodologies where the researcher and educational practitioner sometimes coincide. The study is based on a pilot, with six participants following the PREP program for three months, which we study autoethnographically. We also carried out a focus group discussion (n=12) to investigate to what extent university teachers regard the ideas from the PREP program as helpful for studying educational activities and sharing what they do and find.

  • What graduates want in teacher education
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; In press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To understand what to improve in initial teacher education to better prepare teachers for their profession, we asked alumni (N = 93) from three Swedish initial teacher education programs, what in their education they thought had benefited them the most in preparing them for a teaching career, and what they thought was lacking given their professional needs. Questionnaire responses yielded seven categories: leadership, practicum, didactics, teaching methods, assessment, and personal development. Our results show that the practicum is seen as very valuable and that alumni wish they had been taught more about leadership in the classroom, and teaching methods. On the other hand, there is little evidence that the alumni value the theoretical parts of their programs, including scientific inquiry, in contrast to what research says is essential and what national regulations demand. Differences in replies between the three programs are also discussed and related to the features of the programs.

  • A developmentally descriptive method for quantifying shape in gastropod shells
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Royal Society Interface. - : The Royal Society. - 1742-5689 .- 1742-5662. ; 17:163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of snail shells can be described by simple mathematical rules. Variation in a few parameters can explain much of the diversity of shell shapes seen in nature. However, empirical studies of gastropod shell shape variation typically use geometric morphometric approaches, which do not capture this growth pattern. Wehave developedaway toinfera setofdevelop-mentally descriptive shape parameters based on three-dimensional logarithmic helicospiral growth and using landmarks from two-dimensional shell images as input. We demonstrate the utility of this approach, and compare it to the geometric morphometric approach, using a large set of Littorina saxatilis shells in which locally adapted populations differ in shape. Our method can be modified easily to make it applicable to a wide range of shell forms, which would allow for investigations of the similarities and differences between and within many different species of gastropods. © 2020 The Authors.

  • Lectures with Worksheets
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The 21st SEFI Special Interest Group in Mathematics – SIG in Mathematics PROCEEDINGS. - 9782873520250
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on a teaching intervention in which mathematics lectures were modified to include the use of worksheets with tasks that students were asked to work on with peers periodically during the lectures. Do the students find this format beneficial, and does it help them with the challenges during lectures? The data consists of students´ perceptions about the intervention, collected as free-text answers to questionnaires, and was collected in two calculus courses, one in the USA (n=246) and one in Europe (n=106). The data is coded and categorised, and some basic descriptive statistics are compiled. As a framework for the analysis, we use three didactical challenges for lectures: (1) activating prior knowledge for all students, (2) retaining student focus, and (3) a lack of opportunities for students to get back on track during mathematics lectures. We find that the respondents mostly find the worksheets beneficial but time-consuming. There are indications that the respondents perceive that using worksheets diminishes problems related to the didactical challenges above. However, the challenge regarding activating prior knowledge for all students is not satisfactorily met. Practical implications of these results are discussed, including challenges with the time use and the need to understand which properties of the worksheets influence the students’ experiences the most.

  • Pragmatic Research on Educational Practice - PREP
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ambitious educators try different forms of interventions in their teaching to see what the effects are. However, they often do not have enough time, or data, to meet the requirement of regular educational research. In this talk, we describe a program for studying and improving teaching practices that uses the activities that educators often already do when developing and evaluating courses and assessing students’ knowledge. We call this Pragmatic Research on Educational Practice, or PREP for short. PREP aims to inspire educators to support each other in the process and share the knowledge they gain to add value to the teaching community and themselves without adding too much to their workload.

  • Teaching Competencies
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings for the 51st Annual Conference of the European Society for Engineering Education. - 9782873520267 ; , s. 3089-3095
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In search of a model of teaching competencies for engineering education, we led a focus group discussion as a workshop at SEFI2023, where we got practitioners’ perspectives on essential competencies for teaching. These were compared to a model of teaching competencies called the S2L model, developed and used at a technical university in Sweden. The aim of the workshop was to enrich the participants’ understanding of which competencies are essential for teaching and to challenge and improve the S2L model. After the workshop, the competencies collected from the participants were analysed using content analysis. The results show that the teaching competencies suggested by the participants fit into the S2L model, giving the model support. The participants agreed that a model for teaching competencies is very useful for educators, for example, in self-development and when supporting new colleagues, as a checklist and a common language. They also expressed that the workshop had widened their views on teaching competencies.
