  • Noninvasive measurement of diameter changes in the distal abdominal aorta in man
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. - 0301-5629. ; 18:5, s. 451-457
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An ultrasound phase-locked, echo-tracking system was used to determine the dynamic properties of the distal abdominal aorta in 10 Caucasian male subjects (mean age, 25 years). Recordings were made at rest and during the blood pressure increase resulting from isometric exercise. The pressure diameter curve was nonlinear with an inflection at about 90-110 mmHg. Above this pressure range, the vessel was stiffer (less compliant), but the pressure diameter relationship was roughly linear above as well as below the inflection. Individual pressure diameter curves showed hysteresis, i.e., the aorta had a smaller diameter during expansion than during retraction at corresponding pressures. The pressure strain elastic modulus (Ep) and stiffness (beta) were at rest [Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP), 81 mmHg] 0.70 10(5) N/m2 and 6.0, respectively. During isometric exercise (MAP, 122 mmHg), Ep increased significantly by 91% and stiffness (beta) nonsignificantly by 27%. The variability of the compliance determinations was 5% when the ultrasonic system was combined with intra-arterial blood pressure measurements and less than 7% when combined with auscultatory blood pressure measurements. It is concluded that the phase-locked, echo-tracking system fulfills clinical requirements for routine measurements of vascular compliance.

  • Computer Aided Planning of Production and Working Environment
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Human Factors in Organizational Design and Management -IV. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. ; , s. 499-504, s. 499-504
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Success of design projects depends on their quality from a technical and economic point of view and on the quality of their implementation and use. This paper discusses a computer aided planning (CAP) technique and its applicability and quality in both these respects. One version of the CAP-technique is developed for planning of industrial working environments and another version for planning of residential and working environments for physically handicapped.

  • Application of laser-induced fluorescence and CARS for combustion diagnostics
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Berichte der Bunsengesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie. - 0005-9021. ; 97:12, s. 1643-1649
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Laser diagnostic techniques have during the last decade been successfully applied for diagnostics of combustion processes. The main advantages with these techniques are that they are inherently non-intrusive and that spatially as well as temporally resolved information can be achieved. The current paper will exemplify two different laser spectroscopic techniques. Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF), and Coherent anti-Stokes Roman Scattering (CARS), which are currently the most used laser techniques for temperature and species concentration measurements in combustion systems.

  • Field response of the pine sawfly Neodiprion sertifer to the pheromone (2S, 3S, 7S)‐diprionyl acetate and its stereoisomers
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata. - : Wiley. - 0013-8703. ; 62:2, s. 169-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • All eight optical isomers of 3,7‐dimethyl‐2‐pentadecanyl acetate (diprionyl acetate), of high optical purity (>97.4%), were tested for a behavioural activity on male pine sawflies, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffr.) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), in northern Europe. Males were strongly attracted to (2S, 3S, 7S)‐diprionyl acetate. Addition of more than 0.1% of the (2S, 3R, 7R)‐isomer reduced the catch and above 2% the attraction was completely inhibited. Contrary to what has been reported for North American and Japanese populations, so significant synergistic effect of small amounts of the (2S, 3R, 7R)‐isomer could be demonstrated. The effects of addition of the other six optical isomers alone or in combinations, were also studied, but none was found to be a synergist. The (2S, 3R, 7S)‐isomer had a weak inhibitory effect, and completely inhibited the attraction to the (2S, 3S, 7S)‐isomer when applied in about equal amounts as the attractant. In some cases a reduction in catch was noted when other isomers were tested, but this could be attributed to the very small amounts of the inhibitory (2S, 3R, 7R)‐isomer present in these isomers. 1992 The Netherlands Entomological Society

  • Formation of cytokines by retransfusion of shed whole blood.
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: British journal of anaesthesia. - 0007-0912. ; 72:4, s. 422-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied, in 10 patients undergoing hip replacement surgery, the release of cytokines (tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 alpha (IL-alpha), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8)) in association with retransfusion of autologous shed blood. The patients were reinfused with whole blood collected after operation. The median volume returned to the patients was 300 ml whole blood (25-75% range = 300-425 ml). Before reinfusion, blood was filtered. Plasma concentrations of IL-6 increased 1 and 60 min after retransfusion (P < 0.05). The plasma concentrations of TNF-alpha, IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-4 and IL-8 did not change significantly after retransfusion of shed wound blood. However, there were increased concentrations of IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6 and IL-8 in the collected blood (P < 0.001). The filtration procedure did not reduce significantly the concentrations of these factors. This study shows that whole blood collected from a surgical wound contains large concentrations of cytokines. Filtration of the shed wound blood did not reduce significantly these levels and retransfusion caused increased plasma concentrations of IL-6.

  • Diabetes incidence in users and non-users of antihypertensive drugs in relation to serum insulin, glucose tolerance and degree of adiposity: a 12-year prospective population study of women in Gothenburg, Sweden
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. ; 231, s. 583-588
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Department of Primary Health Care, Sahlgrenska Hospital, Gothenburg University, Sweden. As part of a prospective population study in Gothenburg, Sweden, women aged 50 years were subjected to an intravenous glucose tolerance test on entry to the study and followed up for 12 years. Manifest diabetes was the only end-point registered in this part of the study. Of 352 initially non-diabetic women, 17 (4.8%) subjects developed diabetes, with a fourfold increased risk in women taking antihypertensive drugs (diuretics or beta-blockers, or both) compared with women who were not taking such medication. The increased risk was observed independently of initially measured glucose metabolism variables and degree of adiposity, although the incidences were higher overall if the use of antihypertensive drugs was combined with fasting hyperinsulinaemia and adiposity. This study provides further evidence to support the view that diuretics and beta-blockers are precipitators of type 2 diabetes mellitus. PMID: 1352324 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

  • Expansion pattern and risk of rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms that were not operated on
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Surgery. - 1102-4151. ; 159:9, s. 461-467
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To analyse the outcome of selective management of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms, the expansion patterns of the aneurysms, and the factors that influenced the rate of rupture. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Malmo General Hospital, Lund University, Malmo, Sweden. SUBJECTS: 155 patients (96 men and 59 women) with abdominal aortic aneurysms who were not selected for operation for whatever reason were included in the study immediately after their first ultrasound scan. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Mortality, expansion rate (mm/year) measured on ultrasound scan, and rate of rupture of aneurysm. RESULTS: Median aneurysmal diameter was 40 mm (range 20-80), and length (n = 106) 70 (range 28-140). The patients were followed up for a median of 3.4 years (range 0-10.2). A total of 107 patients died and in 21 the aneurysms ruptured (4 were operated on and survived). Thirteen patients were re-evaluated and operated on electively. Ultrasonography was repeated in 98 patients, the median expansion rates (mm/year) were 3.1 (diameter) and 1.9 (length). There was a significant linear relationship between initial size (diameter and length) and rate of expansion of diameter. The risk of rupture was greater in larger aneurysms that were expanding more quickly. The cumulative mortality was not affected by the 21 aneurysms that ruptured. CONCLUSION: Selective management of patients with aortic aneurysms is justified.

  • Prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm in the offspring of patients dying from aneurysm rupture
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Surgery. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1365-2168 .- 0007-1323. ; 79:11, s. 1142-1143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is high in the brothers of patients with aneurysm. A genetic component in the development of AAA has, therefore, been postulated. In this study the offspring of patients who had died from AAA rupture were invited to undergo ultrasonography of the abdominal aorta. The attendance rate was 69 per cent. Thirty-nine sons of median age 60 (range 45-75) years and 23 daughters of median age 62 (range 42-80) years were examined. Abdominal aortic dilatation was found in eight men and one woman. The presence of aortic dilatation in these nine cases was not related to age, hypertension, smoking or symptoms of occlusive arterial disease. It is concluded that the sons of those who have died from ruptured AAA constitute a high-risk group for the development of this condition and should be considered for further screening.

  • Water balance for landfills of different age
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hydrology. - 0022-1694 .- 1879-2707. ; 158:3-4, s. 203-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Water-related processes in landfills are discussed with emphasis on internal processes such as field capacity, moisture variation in time and space, and macropore flow. Runoff production and evaporation from landfills in Sweden of different age are investigated. It is clarified in what ways and for how long a closed municipal landfill differs from an ordinary land area from a hydrological point of view.
